PRESS RELEASE 12 September 2013 HANG SENG ATHLETE INCENTIVE AWARDS SCHEME PRESENTS HK$1.11 MILLION TO HK MEDALLISTS AT 12TH NATIONAL GAMES The Hong Kong Sports Institute (“HKSI”) and Hang Seng Bank today announced that cash incentives totalling HK$1.11 million will be awarded to 21 Hong Kong medallists under the Hang Seng Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme (“Scheme”) for their outstanding performances at the recently concluded 12th National Games. Cyclists Lee Wai-sze, Chan Chun-hing and Cheung King-lok; equestrienne Jacqueline Lai; fencer Nicolas Choi; the men’s golf team and the men’s rugby sevens team collectively brought home 1 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals. As China’s largest multi-sport Games, the National Games attracts top athletes from all over the country. Mr Carlson Tong JP, Chairman of the HKSI, expressed his appreciation for the hard work and commitment shown by Hong Kong athletes, coaches and their management teams at the Games. He said, “The performances of Hong Kong athletes at this year’s National Games were outstanding. They’ve given their best to compete against strong competitors from across mainland China and are now at their peak for the upcoming East Asian Games. We all look forward to more excellent results and breakthroughs from Hong Kong athletes in Tianjin.” Ms Rose Lee, Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive of Hang Seng, praised Hong Kong athletes for their perseverance and determination in achieving remarkable results at the National Games. “Their great efforts deserve our admiration and recognition. Their success will also encourage up-and-coming athletes to keep striving for sporting excellence. I offer my warmest wishes to local athletes competing in the East Asian Games in October and look forward to more medal-winning performances for Hong Kong.” Initiated by the HKSI in 1994, the Scheme has been sponsored by Hang Seng since 1996. The Scheme provides cash incentives to Hong Kong athletes who achieve outstanding performances at the Olympic Games, the Paralympic Games and the National Games. The Scheme was expanded in 2005 to include medallists at the East Asian Games and, in 2010, medallists at the Asian Games and the Asian Para Games, to further support the development of local sport. Including the amount to be awarded to medallists at the 12th National Games, the Scheme has given out more than HK$31 million to about 370 top-performing Hong Kong athletes since 1996.
