Although Boris Grebenshikov and members of Aquarium did a lot to beef up Kino's debut, it would all be to no avail without Viktor Tsoi's delicate taste and naughtiness. He based his lyrics and music on city folklore, but avoided vulgarity and roughness. 45 had much in common with early Soviet bard music by romanticizing everything in sight from an urban perspective -- but it's not about crime or rubbish. Tsoi's hero is not just an idler; his soul is full of affecting poetry ("Tree") and merry irony ("My Friends") regarding his and his friends' way of life. Vocals range from deliberately rude intonations sarcastically imitating a "cool" manner of speech on the city streets to touching open-hearted confessions. However, the musical foundation is very simple, with acoustic guitars (Boris Grebenshikov and Alexei Rybin), flute (Andrei Romanov and Andrei Tropillo), and cello (Vsevolod Gakkel) creating a variety of lively, vivid, and bright -- if unsophisticated -- pictures. 45 demonstrates that Tsoi and Grebenshikov are skillful melodists. Aquarium brought to the recording all their fertile Akustika experience to make 45 fresh and beautiful in its ingenuity. Sometimes the tunes and beats are rather primitive, seemingly referring to the Merseybeat era, and while one could regard this as a flaw, one might also consider the musical approach as an effective way to deliver the feeling of an early morning headache experienced in a stinking filthy train station, or the despair felt by an impecunious lad. One listener might argue that the arrangements are too naïve and rude, while another might feel that the crudity here reproduces the aura of the early-'80s underground rock movement. Regardless, 45 -- along with Aquarium's Sinii Albom and Akustika -- signified a turning point in Russian rock toward much more independence, with imaginative music and mature lyrics. Some time ago a new media device called Kihno album showed up on a various KPop stores websites. You could get it as an alternative to a standard editions of the albums of your favourite artists. Some are calling it an unnecessary novelty, a gadget, the others a revolutionary piece of technology. Anyway it can be an interesting addition to your KPop collection. But what exactly is a Kihno album ? It is an audio (not only, but more about it later) device. You can compare it to an old school cassette tape or an LP record. But of course it's not an analog but a digital audio format (if we can call it like that). But don't be mistaken. It doesn't contain any data (at least any audio data). It just gives you the access to the digital version of the album through a special application. The audio content has to be downloaded by the app through your Internet connection. The standard Kihno album comes in a package with a sleeve, a Kihno kit (the device itself) and a set of usually 12 photo cards. Its of a size of a playing cards deck. A manual sheet with the most important information is also added. An interesting fact is that the kit has a build in CR2032 battery that is required to let it work properly. This battery can be even replaced. How To Use Kihno Kit. To use it you have to download the Kihno Player app from App Store or Google Play . Then you have to open it and connect your Kihno album to your smartphone via 3.5 mm mini jack headphone connector. You can use an adapter if your smarthpone is not equipped with a mini jack. The app should automatically recognize the album and start downloading it. When it's done a short tutorial will show up to help you understand all the functionality the application provides. The player is visualized as a vinyl record turntable. Different skins are available. On the right side you will see a tracklist and on the left there's a window where you can look through a digital booklet with the photos of a particular KPop group or soloist. As the name 46 suggests, this is just some unfinished business left over from the band's debut, 45. Having assembled a makeshift lineup to record his first album, songwriter Viktor Tsoy gamely carried on recording while trying to assemble a new band from scratch. As a result, what we have here is simply a bunch of lo-fi demos, mainly recorded with very little or no accompaniment beyond the odd half-hearted overdub. For the most part, the songs inhabit familiar Tsoy territory and fans can catch a glimpse of some stripped down standards, such as "Muzika" "Voln," "Sasha," and "Dozhd Dlya Nas" which would go on to become fully realized on later albums. Otherwise, the Serge Gainsbourg-like, "Ya Idu Po Ulitse," in particular, stands out as an enjoyable, well-developed nugget. It's a fleeting exception however. Most of the others fail to distinguish themselves, and remain here alone in their very roughest form. Overall, this is certainly an intriguing and intimate glimpse of the man himself, and at times it's much like being present at an unplugged performance in his bedroom. There is just enough idiosyncrasy and energy to carry it off, but all in all, this is one for fans only.
