SPORTS The Unrelenting Visibility of Wayward Bodies The world of sport has provided the setting for the carnivalesque occupation of streets by the masses on a number of occasions in recent Iranian history. Most notably, following the decisive victories of the Iranian national football team in international tournaments, the streets of major Iranian cities were taken over in celebration by a jubilant crowd, whose genuine emotions and support for their national team proved to be far too strong to be contained in the privacy of their homes, in front of their television screens.

  • Competition Outside the Field: Economics and Marketing of Football in Iran
Competition Outside the Field: Economics and Marketing of Football in Iran Datis Khajeheian and Amir Sedighi Abstract Iranian football clubs are experiencing a difficult period of time. Finan- cial crisis has been a trend in last three decades and majority of clubs are suffering from heavy debts. Premier league, that aimed to lead football clubs to be managed professionally, was not successful in establishing a sustainable economic structure. Considering these, this research provides an analysis of economics of Iranian football from a marketing perspective. Considering competitiveness as a common concept in business and football, authors suggest that the first step to economic success is to turn sport clubs into sport firms. Accordingly, organizational structure must be adapted with this paradigm shift, including a marketing department that acts in such important levels as that of sporting department. Following these structural changes, some B2B and B2C strategies have been suggested. In B2B, authors recommend co-marketing alliances as a solution to exploit the clubs’ brand value; and in B2C, they propose application of customer engagement programs and integrated marketing communication as a solution to generate income from sup- porters and also to co-create clubs’ brand. 1 Introduction Following decades of national league in the country, Iranian Premier League (Jam-e Khalij-e Fars) started in 2001–2002, aiming to promote professional football nation-wide. Besides, it was planned to transform highly government-supported clubs with public-funded structures to private clubes with professional structures that are enabled to generate income and to support themselves with no reliance on the public funds.

The information about injuries has collected in a period of 2 years retrospectively by using a standard questionnaire of Hawkins and Fuller through the players, physicians and team leaders. The results on 145 injuries for 10 football teams showed generally lower extrem- ity injuries was (62.31%) that the highest of them happened (50%) in the knee, the most common type of injury in footballers was sprain(45.51 %) . The tackling and hit the kick, was the leading cause of injury. Given the alarming prev- alence of injuries in women football and prevalence of knee and ankle injuries in varying degrees of strain and sprain because of tackling, this recommends to coaches and team physicians in addition to developing and implementing prevention strategies such as identification and specific training, helps the players to reduce injuries.

  • Introduction to the Book "Sport, Politics And Society in the Middle East"
© C. Hurst & Co. (Ltd) INTRODUCTION FROM SPORTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST TO MIDDLE EASTERN SPORTS Tamir Sorek and Danyel Reiche Sports in the Middle East have become a major issue in global affairs: Qatar’s successful bid for the FIFA World Cup 2022 (won in a final vote against the United States), the 2005 UEFA Champions League Final in Turkey’s most populous city Istanbul, the European basketball championship EuroBasket in 2017 in Israel, and other major sporting events, such as the annually staged Formula 1 races in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi, have put an international spot- light on the region. In particular, media around the world are discussing the question of whether the most prestigious sporting events should be staged in a predominantly authoritarian, socially conservative, and politically conten- tious part of the world.1 The influence of sports in the Middle East extends beyond the region: professional sports clubs around the world have signed sponsorship deals with Middle Eastern airlines, and stadium-naming rights have also been signed with those companies. Major football clubs like Paris Saint-Germain Football Club and Manchester City have been bought by investors from the Gulf–Qatar and Abu Dhabi, respectively. The growing visibility of Middle Eastern sports has only recently attracted the attention of scholars. Although some sporadic academic studies appeared 1 © C. Hurst & Co. (Ltd) SPORT, POLITICS, AND SOCIETY IN THE MIDDLE EAST as early as the 1980s, we can identify the beginning of a ‘wave’ of scholarship in the mid-1990s, which intensified in the early 2000s. These studies were mostly socio-historical, sociological, and anthropological, and they tended to focus on the particular dynamics of certain countries, including Egypt,2 Turke y, 3 Iran,4 Yemen,5 Israel/Palestine,6 and Jordan.7 While more recent scholarship continues similar patterns, and extends to cover new countries,8 since 2010 we may also identify the addition of two new trends.

International Journal of Science Culture and Sport December 2017 : 5(4) ISSN : 2148-1148 Doi : 10.14486/IntJSCS696 Field : Sport Psychology, Coaching Type : Research Article Received: 07.11.2017 - Accepted: 04.12.2017 Home Advantage in Professional Football in Iran – Differences between Teams, Levels of Play and the Effects of Climate Richard POLLARD1, Vasilis ARMATAS2, Seyed Hojjat ZAMANI SANI3 1 Department of Statistics, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA, USA 2 Department of Team Sports, School of Physical Education & Sport Science, National & Kapodistrian University of Athens, Athens, GREECE 3 Department of Motor Behaviour, Faculty of Physical Education & Sport Science, University of Tabriz, Tabriz, IRAN Email: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Abstract Although much has been written about home advantage in football, almost all studies have used data from European countries. To address this deficiency, a single Asian country, Iran, was selected, with the aim of shedding fresh light onto the many factors currently implicated with the existence of home advantage. For each season since its creation in 2001, home advantage was quantified for each team in the Persian Gulf Pro League, adjusting for annual league variation and team ability. Data were also obtained for the level 2 Azadegan League. ANOVA was used to test for differences between teams and a stepwise regression to assess the influence of the explanatory variables which included altitude and climatic variables. Overall home advantage was 59.3%, higher than in most Asian countries. It was greater (p<.001) at level 2 than at level 1, and differed between teams (p<.001), being generally high for team locations alongside the Caspian Sea, while below average for teams from Tehran.
