The morphological characters of these species are described with figures and a key for adult females is provided. Zoology, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR 97331-2907, USA Neotropical Entomology 33(4):547-555 (2004) Diversidade de Ácaros Edáficos Rhodacaroidea (Acari: Mesostigmata) em Ecossistemas Naturais no Estado de São Paulo RESUMO - Avaliou-se neste estudo a diversidade de ácaros Rhodacaroidea em amostras de folhedo e solo coletadas em ecossistemas conhecidos como “Mata Atlântica” e “Cerrado” do estado de São Paulo. O total de 969 Rhodacaroidea adultos foi coletado, 913 na Mata Atlântica e 56 no Cerrado. Foram encontrados representantes de três famílias de Rhodacaroidea: Ologamasidae, Rhodacaridae e Digamasellidae. Ologamasidae foi a mais numerosa na Mata Atlântica, enquanto Rhodacaridae foi a mais numerosa no Cerrado. Os Rhodacaroidea de ambos ecossistemas representaram 12 gêneros de Ologamasidae, dois de Rhodacaridae e um de Digamasellidae. O total de 13 gêneros foi encontrado em amostras de folhedo e sete em amostras de solo da Mata Atlântica. Os gêneros mais comuns neste ecossistema foram Neogamasellevans Loots & Ryke e Ologamasus Berlese, em folhedo, e Rhodacarus Oudemans, em solo. Foram coletadas 31 morfoespécies, sendo Rhodacarus sp.1, Neogamasellevans sp.1 e Neogamasellevans sp.6 as mais abundantes. Foram encontrados três gêneros de Rhodacaroidea em cada substrato do Cerrado, Rhodacarus e Rhodacarellus Willman sendo os mais abundantes. Das cinco morfoespécies encontradas neste ecossistema, a mais abundante foi Rhodacarus sp.1. -

Am. 106(3): 339Ð350 (2013); DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.1603/AN12092 ABSTRACT Mites (Arachnida: Acari) are one of the most diverse groups of organisms associated with bark beetles (Curculionidae: Scolytinae), but their taxonomy and ecology are poorly understood, including in Canada. Here we address this by describing the diversity, species composition, and host associations of mesostigmatic and oribatid mites collected from scolytines across four sites in eastern Ontario, Canada, in 2008 and 2009. Using Lindgren funnel traps baited with ␣-pinene, ethanol lures, or Ips pini (Say) pheromone lures, a total of 5,635 bark beetles (30 species) were collected, and 16.4% of these beetles had at least one mite. From these beetles, a total of 2,424 mites representing 33 species from seven families were collected. The majority of mite species had a narrow host range from one (33.3%) or two (36.4%) host species, and fewer species had a host range of three or more hosts (30.3%). This study represents the Þrst broad investigation of the acarofauna of scolytines in Canada, and we expand upon the known (worldwide) host records of described mite species by 19%, and uncover 12 new species. Half (7) of the 14 most common mites collected in this study showed a marked preference for a single host species, which contradicts the hypothesis that nonparasitic mites are typically not host speciÞc, at least locally. -

The new species is unusual among the known congeners in the specifically formed triramous epistome of which the central projection is reduced in length, truncate, and markedly shorter than lateral ones. In other congeneric species, the anterior margin of the epistome possesses three pointed projections of similar size. A dichotomous key for identification of females of the world species classified in the genus Dendroseius is provided. The geographical range of M. arctomontana is limited by arctic and mountain landscapes of Siberia. This description provides further data on the arctic distribution and morphological diversity of the subfamily Arctoseiinae, which is unusually well represented in that region (26–83 % in local gamasid mite faunas). -

Environmental Management A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2020 School of Biological Sciences Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Science Abstract Islands and their biodiversity have high conservation value globally. Non-native species are largely responsible for island extinctions and island ecosystem disruption and are one of the major drivers of global biodiversity loss. Developing tools to effectively measure and understand island ecosystem change is therefore vital to future island conservation management, specifically island communities and the threatened species within them. One increasing utilised island conservation management tool is invasive mammal eradication. Such programs are increasing in number and success, with high biodiversity gains. Typically, it is assumed that the removal of target non-native species equates to management success and in some instances, recovery of a key threatened or charismatic species affected by the pest species are monitored. Yet to date, there are few published studies quantifying post- eradication ecosystem responses. Such monitoring helps to calculate return-on-investment, understand the conservation benefits of management and inform conservation decision- making associated with current and future restoration programs. The abundance of carabid beetles, collembolans, and mites were monitored before, during, and after the seeding, growth, and incorporation of two mustard varieties (‘Tilney’ and ‘Florida Broadleaf’) individually or in combination, and in plots where no cover crops were grown. Species richness and diversity indices and principal response curves also were used to analyze and compare communities over time across the selected cover-crop treatments. Insects were collected from pitfall traps during four sampling periods in 2008: 06-09 April, 10-12 June, 24-27 June, and 17-19 July. Soil samples were collected in 2008 on 18 April, 2 June (1 week after planting of mustards), 29 June (shortly before incorporation of mustards), 18 July (2 weeks after incorporation of mustards), and 11 September and in 2009 on 25 May. A total of 528 carabid beetles representing 8 genera were recovered from pitfall traps in all plots combined in 2008. Anisodactylus santaecrucis Fabricius accounted for 54 percent of all carabids recovered, and Poecilus chalcites Say accounted for 32 percent. -
