Frank Stella Frank Stella MEDIUM Painting, sculpture NATIONALITY American LIFE DATES Malden, Massachusetts 1936 - Born in 1936 in Malden, Massachusetts, Stella was the eldest son of first generation Italian- Americans. He attended the Phillips Academy in Andover, studying painting with Patrick Morgan, and graduated from Princeton University in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. Although Princeton did not offer a degree in studio art, Stella found guidance with painter Stephen Greene and the art historian William Seitz. Stella moved to New York in the late 1950s. He rented a former jeweler’s shop in the Lower East Side on Eldridge Street and found employment as a house painter. Influenced by the paintings of post- war Abstract Expressionists such as Barnett Newman, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline, he began using ordinary house paint on canvas to create symmetrical black shapes delineated by pinstripes. These paintings, known as the Black Paintings, are often credited with paving the way for the minimal art movement of the 1960s. Art Dealer Leo Castelli invited 23-year-old Stella to join his gallery’s roster of cutting-edge artists, which included Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. By the fall of 1959, Stella participated in his first important group show,Sixteen Americans at the Museum of Modern Art. From 1960, Stella created paintings in aluminum and copper paint and began using shaped canvases, often in L, N, U, or T shapes. These later developed into more elaborate designs, as seen in the Irregular Polygon series of the mid-1960s. Stella also employed a wider range of colors, typically arranged in straight or curved lines (exemplified in hisProtractor Series of 1967). In the 1970s Stella’s style underwent a dramatic change, as the carefully constructed geometric designs executed in flat planes of color were replaced by a looser style. The shaped canvases took on even less regular forms in the Eccentric Polygon series, and elements of collage were introduced with pieces of canvas pasted onto plywood. His work also became more three-dimensional, in large, freestanding metal pieces functioning between sculpture and painting. Stella has gone on to produce a number of large works for public spaces and architectural commissions. He lives and works in New York City. .

He is matter-of-fact and unguarded, secure on his perch in the pantheon after two solo retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art. He can — and did — wear white house-slippers to an interview and photo shoot. Deal with it. Mr. Stella became art-famous not long after graduating from Princeton in 1958, and he has been lauded for achievements like his early Black Paintings, with their dazzling geometric rigor and their power to inspire statements like his “What you see is what you see.” His work evolved over the decades — the brightly colored Protractor series became a landmark of contemporary art, too, and eventually his work got sculptural and very big. His studio is now in the Hudson Valley, where he goes often to make pieces that require a lot of space, like “adjoeman” (2004), a stainless steel and carbon fiber sculpture weighing some 3,000 pounds that was once featured on the roof of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Since opening his first art foundry in the late 1960s, Polich has worked closely with the most significant artists of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Before announcing today’s program, I would like to inform you that two weeks from today, the last program will consist of a lecture delivered by Professor William Rubin on the subject of color in modern American painting. One further announcement: I think many of you came here today fully expecting to find Harold Rosenberg as the other participant with Barnett Newman in the conversation. Unfortunately, Mr. Rosenberg was unable to come; he is teaching in the Midwest and was making a special trip to New York for this program, but at the very last moment something arose which made it impossible for him to be here. And so we were very grateful that Thomas Hess volunteered to take Harold Rosenberg’s place. And so [00:01:00] our subject today has been retitled, “Conversation with Hess and Newman.” Thomas Hess, writer and editor of Art News, is very well known to all of us. He has held this position on that important publication since 1949, having joined the staff of Art News just a few years before. He has always been considered a leading spokesman for and about the movement of new American painting which emerged after the war. He is an author of two very popular, well- known books on American art, one entitled Abstract Painting and the other a monograph on the work of Willem de Kooning. The interview took place at the artist's studio on 75 Spring Street, New York City, and was conducted by Judd Tully for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. Interview JUDD TULLY: According to published information, you were born in the state of Washington in 1940. What was your actual birthdate and tell me a little bit about Monroe, Washington? CHUCK CLOSE: July 5, 1940. Monroe, Washington, was a smelly little town halfway up the Cascade Mountains, northeast of Seattle. I didn't live there very long, actually. I was born at home -- not in a hospital -- of humble beginnings. Actually, I want to go back and photograph the house, because if I were a politician it would be great to have a picture of the shack that I was born in. [They laugh.] MR. TULLY: Was it really a shack? MR. CLOSE: Well, it wasn't a real shack, but it was a very modest little cottage. "Cottage" is giving it all the benefit of the doubt. It was definitely on the wrong side of the tracks -- about thirty five feet from the tracks.
