But as we know, he traveled throughout London, throughout England, and to other parts of the world. Clients came to consult him as well. Those travels requited the use of various forms of transportation. Mobile Holmes describes all of those modes of movement. Starting with walking, the book then covers horses, carriages, railroads, ships (both surface vessels of all types and submarines), bicycles, automobiles, and even airplanes. In this excerpt from the book, John Durein provides a fascinating account of London’s Underground (the Tube), including its development and its part in the Holmes stories. He also brings a personal perspective – his great-grandfather played a critical role in converting the Underground from coal to electricity. Sherlock Down the Tubes by John Durein, BSI His paper begins on the next page. www.BakerStreetJournal.com Page 1 of 7 Sherlock Down the Tubes by John Durein, BSI Although not mentioned as extensively in the Canon as hansom cabs and other means of surface transportation, London’s Underground is referred to in several of the stories, and features prominently in the “Ad- venture of the Bruce-Partington Plans.” In fact, 221B Baker Street is in close proximity to the Baker Street station, entrance to one of the oldest parts of the Underground. During the era of Holmes and Watson, the station featured brass lift doors, like those of a five-star hotel, and there were clean, unbroken, brown and white tiles all the way to the lifts. -

The London Underground by Samantha Ladart "No room, no room!" The cry was heard over the roaring din of the thousands of people gathered at the railway stations for the opening of the world's first underground-the Metropolitan Line. The gloomy chant had a dark effect on those assembled, < 1> matching the dark, echoing tunnels that led the trains under the earth. In spite of the cries that the trains were full, the crowds of people who came out to experience riding under the city remained in line, hoping for a ticket. It was Saturday, January 10, 1863, and at 6:00 A.M. the rides began. The public had been anticipating this opening day for twenty- one months, and they refused to be daunted. The early 19th century was a period of remarkable growth in England. With the onset of the Industrial Revolution, London began the construction of factories. As these factories sprang up, increasing amounts of people began to move from the country-side into London for work. This tremendous increase in the population of the city created an immense demand for public transportation. The first passenger-carrying railway (above the ground) in London was the London and Greenwich Line, which opened on February 8, 1836, and continued expansion for the next four years. By 1840, the line carried nearly six million passengers and had enlarged its main service lines to the outskirts of London's central business district. Because of the high cost of constructing through built up areas and the extensive property damage, all of the termini were located outside the city. -

In the summer of 2012 London put on a triumphant performance that was all the sweeter for being unexpected - at least by many commentators. For months we had been told that the city’s ageing transport system would never cope, that traffic would be appalling, that business would be crippled. We were warned that a cash-strapped Britain could not hope to compete with the fireworks of Beijing. The critics noted that we had been so foolish as to build a stadium without a proper roof and that our guests would be soaked by the English summer. As the first night got closer, the doubts intensified. One day a Jubilee line train sat down and refused to move, so that the passengers had to be walked off down the tunnel. One of the key parts of the Olympic Route Network - a bridge on the M4 - turned out at the eleventh hour to be about as robust as a freshly dunked digestive biscuit. Then thousands of security guards went AWOL and when the first athletes arrived an American contingent somehow got lost on their way to the park. -

Fraud, bankruptcy, suicide and transportation: The history of the London Underground railway Transcript Date: Thursday, 16 March 2006 - 12:00AM Fraud, Bankruptcy, Suicide and Transportation for Life: The Early History of the London Underground Railway Dr Stephen Halliday The title of this lecture is “Fraud, Bankruptcy, Suicide and Transportation for Life: The Early History of the London Underground Railway”. You may wonder what those rather sinister sounding things have to do with the history of the London Underground Railway. Well, all will become clear, because they all featured in its early history. The current tube map represents what we think the Underground looks like. This is what it really looks like. An an early version of the Underground map, which was produced in the 1920s, shows what it really looks like. Although they had already began to use the idea of colours to distinguish the different lines, it is nowhere near as clear as the modern map. The first version of the famous map was produced by Harry Beck, 1901 to 1974, who was an electrical draughtsman employed by the London Underground, and regularly made redundant by them, because in those days, they had the kind of financial problems that they often have nowadays. During one of his intermittent periods of redundancy, he sketched out the map on the back of an envelope, literally, using principles associated with wiring diagrams. The way in which the map is constructed is that, first of all, as far as possible, you have straight lines. Where necessary, you have 45 degree angles or 90 degree angles, and the other characteristic of it is that there is no resemblance at all between the distance between the stations on the ground and the distance between the stations on the map.
