The event raised around $20,000. While the Life Education Trust and the young people it helps make positive choices were the ultimate winners of the night, judges declared jive dance couple Shanan Gray and Maiko Lewis-Whaanga the champions. Lewis-Whaanga was not available for comment this morning but posted her love of the event and its supporters on Facebook. “Every single couple put on the most entertaining, fabulous performances. I just feel so proud of us all because it has been literally months, weeks, hours of practice and commitment to support this great cause and to entertain everyone for this one night. “Shanan it was so much fun working with you, and I’m so proud of us because we also took on the challenge of choreographing our own dance, too”. Dual runners-up in the inaugural event were Di Akurangi and Matai Smith, whose dance styles included conga, hip-hop and jive, and tango dancers Hana Edwards and Jason Akuhata-Brown. Tina Drummond and Luke Marks were judged Best Dressed while the People’s Choice Award went to Akurangi and Smith. Pat Seymour, the chairwoman for Life Education Trust Inc in Gisborne, East Coast and Wairoa, could not be more pleased with the support given to the competition, and the dancers’ dedication. “The work the dancers and their dance teachers put in and the audience enjoyment — it was a fantastic night,” she said. “Thank you to the amazing sponsors and the amazing dancers.” Guest celebrity, broadcaster and writer Scotty Stevenson, who emceed the event alongside local man Terry Sheldrake, did “a wonderful job,” she said. Stevenson, who interviewed the couples after teach dance, made a connection with them and the audience loved it. The audience also contributed to the evening’s success, she said. “They encouraged not only their friends but supported everybody.” She also thanked event manager Kathy Sheldrake, the community’s generous sponsors, Mangapapa Zumba Troupe, who led the evening TWO TO TANGO: Hana Edwards with an opening performance, judges Amanda and Jason Akuhata-Brown bring Gillies, Cherie Gaukrodger, Treva Rice and power, grace and sensuousness Stephen Taylor, and auctioneer duo Peter to their tango at the Dancing McGranaghan and Neville Clarke, who raised for Life Education fundraiser on $10,000 from the auction.
