We now begin to reprint the entire four lectures of Fr Thurston’s “Modern Spiritualism” (Sheed and Ward 1928. Twelvepenny Series.) which cover about 90 pages. Our intention would be to include one lecture in each of four successive issues of Psypioneer. Once again we are grateful to the Treasurer. Copyright in Fr Thurston's work is held by the British Province of the Society of Jesus. The full text of this and of the following three articles in subsequent issues is reproduced by virtue of written permission given to Psypioneer News. Light has never received any extended coverage or historical treatment yet it was one of the major spiritualist newspapers during this part of British history. This thesis diagrams the lives of Light ’s first four major editors from 1881 till the end of World War I and their views on the growth of science, God, Christ, evolution, and morality. By focusing on one major spiritualist newspaper from 1881 till 1920, this thesis attempts to bridge the gap in spiritualist historiography that marks World War I as a stopping or starting point.

This is one of the most important books ever written by a Spiritualist on the Movement’s history. Readers of Psypioneer have already seen (November 2006 issue) the foreword which explains its plan. The unusual title is adapted from a line in Robert Graves “The White Goddess” (Blow on a dead man’s embers and a fire will start). The book is original in several respects. It is still uncommon for scholars to follow Logie Barrow “Independent Spirits” in giving attention to plebeian Spiritualism in England. It is rare for a book on Spiritualist history to focus on one city (however, Vieda Skultans “Intimacy and Ritual” was an anthropological study of Spiritualists in a South Wales town.). Though Dr G.K. Nelson made a sociological analysis of the Movement in his book “`Spiritualism and Society”, O’Hara provides a detailed analysis of a local Spiritualist community.

Henry Wordsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) Mrs MaryAnn Everitt Mrs St. Clair Stobart Mrs Ivy Northage (1825-1915) (1862-1954) (1909-2002) These three portraits of spiritual pioneers, which I like to think of as ‘Torchbearers of Spiritualism’i spanning from the 19th to the 21st Century have all played a very special role in the history of spiritualism. They are just three of the pioneers that I have researched for my talks. So called ‘Modern Spiritualism’ started in 1848 with the Fox Sisters in America. Twenty four years later, in 1872, The Marylebone Spiritualist Association (MSA), now known as the Spiritualist Association of Great Britain (SAGB), was founded by Mr C I Hunt, who lived in Marylebone, hence our original name. Recent research: I have found out his first names were Charles Isaac and he was born in 1823, the same year as Mr Thomas Everitt and lived near Marylebone Workhouse. His Son, Leigh Hunt (1869-1940) was married to Florence Emily Hunt, the daughter of William Thomas Cooper. We owe so much to these early workers; all four held positions in the MSA, please see the back page.
