RIVER RIN 15,_ RACE NOTES~~ ° It was with somewhat mixed emotions that I drove to'~; cO<' Coastline Drive early the morning of March 14. The intensity -~~~~ of several months of preparing, problem solving and working -::-~'L:'" with numerous friends had almost become an end in itself. Now I realized the race was to begin and our job would be over. Many of us would never be the same for our experience. Lingering fear of the weather was dismissed at daybreak by a beautiful mild (54°) spring day. Following last minute scrambling and hectic radio calls, suddenly everything fell in its place. Order at the starting line, runners ready, no time to savor that moment, arid off they went. _~ -.~- - - --~~- What a race it was! _ The pack of Durden, Floto, _0 Roja-s/,"c_~:t~~ ° Sinclair, Kenny and Dillon after several exchanges resal ved .=::-. itself to the greatest duel yet witnessed in River-RUn. Dillon and Sinclair surged ahead on the Hart Bridge and ran neck and neck the remaining distance. The outcome was °only decided by Dillon's powerful kick in the last 100 yards to take the prize ~y two seconds. Third place went to Steve Floto (44.34) and fourth to Louis Kenny (44.35), both runners also breaking the course record. Further back (but getting closer every year) the lead women Were setting a blistering pace, which resulted in Patti Catalano's new American record at 49.33. Joan Benoit finished second, breaking her own River Run record at 50:29 with Jacqueline Gareau at a fine third of 51.37. As Race Director, I want to express my appreciation to all of the race workers whose superb efforts mac;le River Run the class event of the South. Also; °both myself and the Jacksonville Track Club are extremely grateful for the coopera tion and assistance of the City of Jacksonville and the Of.fice of the Sheriff. To our generous sponsors, The Florida Times ~. Union and Jacksonville Journal and the Barnett Bank, special thanks for your support and confidence. Lastly, thanks to the participants and spectators for creating the "River Run Spirit". The 1982 River Run 15,000 will be held on Saturday, March 13. Be there and be a part of it.
