International Baccalaureate World School @ Atlantic Community High School IB for the class of Orientation 2022 Packet The aim of all IB Programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. 1 | IBMYP Class of 2022 International Baccalaureate World School @ Atlantic Community High School 2 | IBMYP Class of 2022 International Baccalaureate World School @ Atlantic Community High School The IB Middle Years Programme is a unique approach, relevant for today’s global society, designed for students aged 11 to 16. It provides a framework of learning that encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers. The MYP emphasizes intellectual challenge, encouraging students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and the real world. It fosters the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding and global engagement - essential qualities for young people who are becoming global leaders. The Curriculum consists of eight subject groups aimed at helping students develop their personal understanding and their emerging sense of self and responsibility to their community. Students will study their mother tongue, a second language, humanities, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical education and design. In the final year of the program, students also engage in a personal project, which allows them to demonstrate the understandings and skills they have developed throughout the program. MYP teachers organize the curriculum with appropriate attention to: ● Teaching and learning in context. Students learn best when their learning experiences have context and are connected to their lives and the world that they have experienced. Using global contexts, MYP students explore human identity, global challenges and what it means to be internationally-minded. ● Conceptual understanding. Concepts are big ideas that have relevance within specific disciplines and across subject areas. MYP students use concepts as a vehicle to inquire into issues and ideas of personal, local and global significance and examine knowledge holistically. ● Approaches to learning (ATL). A unifying thread throughout all MYP subject groups, approaches to learning provide the foundation for independent learning and encourage the application of their knowledge and skills in unfamiliar contexts. Developing and applying these skills help students learn how to learn. ● Service as action, through community service. Action (learning by doing and experiencing) and service have always been shared values of the IB community. Students take action when they apply what they are learning in the classroom and beyond. IB learners strive to be caring members of the community who demonstrate a commitment to service—making a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment. Service as action is an integral part of the program. ● Language and identity – The study of additional languages in the Middle Years Programme (MYP) provides students with the opportunity to develop insights into the features, processes and craft of language and the concept of culture, and to realize that there are diverse ways of living, viewing and behaving in the world. MYP students are required to learn at least two languages (language of instruction and an additional language). Learning to communicate in a variety of ways is fundamental to their development of intercultural understanding and crucial to their identity affirmation. 3 | IBMYP Class of 2022 International Baccalaureate World School @ Atlantic Community High School MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMME CURRICULUM MODEL Assessment Assessment is criterion-related, so students around the world are measured against pre- specified criteria for each subject group. Teachers set assessment tasks that are assessed internally within the school. The IB also mandates external moderation of the personal project. The recording and reporting of individual levels of achievement are organized in ways that provide students with detailed feedback on their progress as it relates to the assessment criteria for each subject group. Quality assurance and professional development Any school wishing to offer the Middle Years Programme must attain and maintain IB World School status through a rigorous evaluative process. The requirements for authorization are the same for all schools and is designed to ensure schools are well prepared to implement the program successfully. Teams from the organization visit authorized schools from time to time in order to support an ongoing process of review and development using standards and practices that apply to all IB World Schools. The MYP is inclusive by design; students of all interests and academic abilities can benefit from their participation; however, it is a challenging program that demands the best from both motivated students and teachers; therefore, schools have access to extensive IB professional development for teachers and administrators and commit to ongoing professional development. 4 | IBMYP Class of 2022 International Baccalaureate World School @ Atlantic Community High School Four Year IB Progression Plan Grade 9 (MYP) Grade 10 (MYP) Grade 11 (DP) Grade 12 (DP) MYP English II: Group 1: MYP English I or AP Literature & DP English III: AP Language and AICE General Composition Language & DP English IV Literature Paper or Composition AICE Literature Group 2: MYP French DP French Language or or Acquisition MYP Spanish DP Spanish MYP World AP Human AP US History Group 3: History Geography, DP History of the Individuals & or AP Psychology, *Emergency Americas, Societies AP World AP Art History or AP Medical European History** US Gov’t. & Responder History, or other **must have 3.5 GPA Economics (certification Group 3 option AND 4 or 5 FSA ELA *AP US History Level course) AICE Chemistry, DP Chemistry, AP Biology, DP Biology, AP Physics, DP DP Physics, DP Group 4: MYP Chemistry or Computer Computer Sciences MYP Biology AICE Chemistry Science, DP Science, DP Marine Science, Marine Science, or DP Sports or DP Sports Exercise Science Exercise Science Group 5: MYP Algebra I, Next Appropriate DP Appropriate DP Mathematics Geometry, appropriate MYP mathematics mathematics Algebra II or mathematics track track Pre-Calculus level MYP Speech, Art, or Music Group 6: th (semester course) DP 6th area DP 6 area Elective MYP Design and student choice student choice MYP PE (continued) (Yoga or Pilates) (semester course) Elective or Career Semester 1: Semester 1: Course Elective elective of choice DP Theory of or Career Course Knowledge Elective *Anatomy and Semester 2: Physiology *Health Science 2 DP Theory of Semester 2: Honors Knowledge elective of choice *Medical Program 5 | IBMYP Class of 2022 International Baccalaureate World School @ Atlantic Community High School Mathematics Progression MYP Algebra I **All IBMYP students must complete MYP Algebra II prior to MYP Geometry the start of grade 11 to enter Diploma Programme. **MYP Algebra II DP Math Studies 1 MYP Pre-calculus DP Mathematics 1 (Pre-calculus) SL SL or HL SL DP Math Studies 2 AP Calculus AB DP Mathematics 2 (Calculus) SL HL SL AP Calculus BC HL Optional Concurrent DP Mathematics Course: HL Further Math HL 6 | IBMYP Class of 2022 International Baccalaureate World School @ Atlantic Community High School Advanced Placement Courses Available to IB Students AP Literature and Composition AP Biology AP Language and Composition AP Chemistry AP Spanish AP Physics 1 AP French AP Physics 2 AP World History AP Environmental Science AP Art History AP Calculus AB AP Human Geography AP Calculus BC AP Psychology AP Statistics AP United States History AP Studio Art AP US Government and Politics AP 2D/3D Art AP Comparative Government AP Computer Science Principles AP Microeconomics AP Computer Science A AP Macroeconomics 7 | IBMYP Class of 2022 International Baccalaureate World School @ Atlantic Community High School Courses Offered to Satisfy the IB Diploma 6th area Requirement A Second World Language* (must take all 4 years of Spanish and French) Social Anthropology Philosophy Psychology Economics Geography Further Math A Second Science Music* (Band course) Visual Arts* (MYP Art or Creative Photo) IB Film Studies* (TV Production) *Must take 1st level(s) in MYP (cited in parentheses) IB Career-related Programme Pathways Drafting (pre-architecture) Construction TV Production Digital Design Photography Culinary Criminal Justice* Early Childhood* Medical Sciences* *Must take 1st levels in MYP as these are 3-4 year career programs 8 | IBMYP Class of 2022 International Baccalaureate World School @ Atlantic Community High School Welcome Letter from the Language and Literature Department Dear Parents, The International Baccalaureate English teachers ask that you consider carefully the Language and Literature courses for the next several years. This is an international program, and IB mandates much of its content. Therefore, many of the works of a traditional high school English survey course are not included. Instead, the world literature component draws texts from various countries and by various authors. In every case the work is examined for its literary value and its contribution to its own culture as well as our own. All works are essential in building the proper foundation for the International Baccalaureate curriculum. At all levels, it is essential that you and your student feel comfortable reading works by
