It has many beautiful pieces of art including stained-glass windows and iron artwork. You are invited to draw, paint or form a collage picture of the church building or any of the artwork you can see at the church. Kintore Parish Church – Bicentenary Creative Writing Competition Inside the main gate at Kintore Parish Church stands an ancient Pictish Stone adorned with strange mystical symbols. One day as you pass by you step through the gate and stand gazing at the stone. Suddenly your head begins to spin. You fall. When you awake, you have been transported 200 years back in time to the year 1819. Nearby some men are working hard to build the walls of the new church building. When they discover that you are from the year 2019 they are eager to hear what life will be like in their town so far into the future. In 300 words or less, describe life in Kintore in 2019 to the group of 1819 church-builders.

P5 Winning Essay | Church Story | By Chloe Campbell, P5, Kintore Primary School Let me tell you all about life in Kintore in 2019: electricity to work. Tractors are often used by farmers for These days people have radiators for heating, they’re like their farming. We use lots of cables and we plug them these machines that produce heat. People also have cars into sockets, that’s where we manage to get electricity for transport, cars are a type of vehicle on four wheels, for things like straighteners, girls use them on their hair it has a roof and a wheel to steer. There are also these to make it straight, they produce heat and that’s how things called mobile phones, they are a rectangle shaped they straighten. If something needs charged, we use and can be used to play games, text other people and sockets to charge them as well. We can use calculators make calls. Kintore Town House is still up, so is this church for helping us with maths questions, they are little devices you are building. There are flushing toilets, there is just that you can type up the question and it will give you the a handle to flush. There is a running fountain just by the answer. Lorries, vans and trucks are just like cars but Town House. We use lampposts to light up the streets at bigger. night, they are poles with lights on top to lighten up the So that is what Kintore is like in 2019. You would be place. There are computers that people use to do work on, proud how the church has lasted all of these years. they have a keyboard for typing, a screen and they need

Page 10 Page 11 KINTORE CHURCH CELEBRATES BICENTENNIAL

Message from Rev Neil Meyer The Next 200 Years “Be confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:6

Dear friends,

Before the summer we ran a Primary Schools essay As the church, we dare to hope further ahead than that: competition in which we invited children to imagine Peace and reconciliation between individuals, groups and explaining life in 2019 to the builders of our church nations; justice for the poor; solace for broken hearts; building in 1819. The entries were wonderfully creative community for the lonely; confrontation with the evil that and insightful – the winners are published elsewhere in besets our hearts, our communities and our institutions; this edition. It made me wonder what stories children 200 and above all, a reawakening of awe before the living God years hence (in 2219!) would have to tell us if they could. and reconciliation with the same, loving God. When we began planning our bicentenary celebrations this The next 200 years will challenge humanity to find new year we were determined that it would be an opportunity solutions to the growing inequalities and injustices between to look forward and not merely to dwell on the glory of the the richest and the poorest. We will be challenged to past. Our Bicentennial Celebration in Words and Music in move beyond a narrow secular humanism which prioritises June was a wonderful retrospective look at worship and the survival and wellbeing of humans above the rest of music over the past 200 years. We will hold a second creation towards a more Biblical humanism, which gives more forward-looking concert at the end of September at humanity priority only insofar as our custodial responsibility which the young people of Kintore will entertain us with towards the rest of creation is concerned. music and song. There is much to do and much to hope for as we look But how far into the future should we look? On the one forward to the next 200 years of bearing witness to the hand, Jesus encouraged his followers not to worry about Christ who comes to make all things new. tomorrow but to honour each day as it arrives (Matthew Rev Neil Meyer 6), yet on the other hand the church is one of the few institutions in modern society that takes the long view on things – worshipping in a building that has stood for 200 years, following a movement (the Way of Jesus) that has been around for 2000 years in a faith tradition (Judaism) that spans 3500 years and serving a God who is from everlasting to everlasting. So, without worry or fear, we look forward in hope to the next 200 years and beyond. How different that is to the planning horizons we most often encounter in the democratic West. A Rabbi once said that Tradition is the finest form of democracy because it extends the vote to previous generations. Greta Thunberg’s School Strike for Climate movement (www. schoolstrike4climate.com/) challenges the world to allow future generations into the democratic process. But the reality is that the election cycle requires that none of our political leaders need to plan seriously beyond about 5 years into the future, and the mass media news cycle – which seems to drive most of our politics today – has an even shorter planning horizon than that. At a personal level, we don’t fare much better. Fewer than 60% of UK workers have prepared adequately for their retirement, and almost nobody nowadays lays any plans beyond their own funeral arrangements.
