Mss 1058 Creator Walter Weidenbacher (Author/Creator) Abstract This collection contains the writings, music, radio and college courses and correspondence of Walter Weidenbacher (Lohr), 1924-1972, n.d. Quantity Ten boxes and 1 oversized folder (3.7 cubic feet) Date Span 1924-1972, n.d. Call Number Mss 1058 Repository Cincinnati Museum Center, 1301 Western Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Scope and Content This collection consists of ten boxes and one oversized folder (3.7 cubic ft.) and covers the years 1924 -1972. Many of the plays, musicals, poems and stories in Series 1 are fragments or outlines. If the poem, song or story did not have a title the first line is used as the title. Some of the poems, songs and stories had letters attached to them so these were kept together in this series. The programs in Series 2 are mainly from theater performances, although there are some from musical concerts and art exhibitions. In Series 3 the radio shows and courses are mostly in outline form and include the names of the musical pieces he was discussing. Box 10 contains some of the teaching aids he used in his courses and radio shows. Series 5 contains correspondence to and from Walter Weidenbacher as well as some of his personal items. Historical/Biographical Information Walter Weidenbacher (1907-1971) was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 9, 1907 and grew up in the West End, attending Washburn School and later Hughes High School. Though he did not graduate from Hughes he always pursued artistic endeavors, becoming a proficient musician, actor, playwright, poet, painter, photographer and teacher. Weidenbacher became well known in the 1950s and 1960s with the radio and television shows that he did for the University of Cincinnati on local stations, WCPO, WKRC, WLW, WCET and WFBE. As someone who was often self-taught he enjoyed the chance to bring good music and art to the masses. Weidenbacher was quite active with the Boy Scouts of America, even composing a song, "Scout Anthem" in 1956 (box 9 folder 52) and a poem, "The Spirit of Scouting" (box 2 folder 55), for them. For a great deal of Weidenbacher's professional career he went by the name Walter Lohr. In his personal life he used Weidenbacher, although for a time he went by Weidenbach. The inventory listings and spellings reflect what was on the item and are an interesting look at how he divided his professional, artistic and personal life. The Reds lose to the Pittsburgh Pirates, 10-1, before a sellout crowd of 42,343 MLB.COM Get the season started with 30 cool Statcast stats for 30 teams MLB.com analyst Mike Petriello looks back at the some of the best Statcast findings in the inaugural year of the new analysis tool By Mike Petriello / MLB.com | @mike_petriello | March 30th, 2016 + 0 COMMENTS This marks the second season of Statcast™, and that means we have an entire season of data about exit velocity, spin rate, extension, arm strength, lead distance, launch angle and just about anything else you can think of, for every team. Let's get the season started in style by running down an interesting Statcast™ stat for each team -- in many cases, something that never could have been measured prior to 2015. AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST Blue Jays: 1.07 seconds: Ryan Goins' baseball-leading exchange time, which is a way to measure the time that elapses between a fielder receiving the ball and releasing the throw. What that means is that no infielder in the game managed to get rid of the ball as quickly as Goins did, which makes sense given his stellar defensive reputation. Orioles: 82.2 mph: Darren O'Day's average exit velocity against on four-seam fastballs, the second lowest among 407 pitchers who threw at least 100 of them. Despite averaging just 88 mph on his otherwise unimposing fastball, O'Day's swing-and-miss rate of 36.8 percent was better than every pitcher other than Aroldis Chapman, and the hitters that did make contact against O'Day's funky sidearm delivery failed to make good contact, leading to a .097 average against it.

owel Crosley Jr 8CR-W8GM *1886-1961* Another Buckeye – The Henry Ford of Radio! A P list of firsts too long to mention - truly a wealthy pioneer. Our subject born in Cincy to Charlotte and Powel Crosley, an attorney. Educated locally, at College Hill then to Ohio Military Institute upon graduating in 1905. Attending U of Cincinnati, being obsessed with mechanics of automobiles. The mass production of autos employed by Henry Ford caught his attention and implemented by his brother, Lewis, when the two began manufacturing quality affordable radios in 1921. Crosley an industrialist repeatedly played “Song of India” phonograph record over 8CR, his experimental 20 watt station at his College Hill home. He asked anyone who heard his broadcast to mail (QSL) a postcard and heard from people as far away as Troy, Ohio. In 1921 Local auto parts producer Powel Crosley, moves his ham radio station 8CR transmitter from his home to the factory location and has same licensed under the letters WLW. - Crosley will organize his radio Corporation in 1923 and the station becomes the Voice of the Midwest’s pork and corn belt. He was issued W8GM in 1934. Unfortunately, many people have never heard of Crosley, he developed many inventions that have changed our lives today. We haven’t mentioned the Crosley Family influence and far reaching roll they played in WW II War effort, also the Cincinnati Reds baseball team, Crosley Field and Crosley appliances and the automobile, over 30 MPG. It’s all there on Wikipedia.com give it a look. Below we post the winter home Powel built for his wife Gwendolyn in 1929 on a 63 acre Florida parcel called Seagate, a Sarasota Bay retreat.

Summary: The purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of the Spanish language and the remarkable contribution to Major League Baseball by Spanish- American players. Keywords: baseball, sports, Major League Baseball, Spanish, Latinos Introduction The purpose of this paper is to highlight the remarkable contribution made to Major League Baseball (MLB) by players from Spanish America both in terms of © Clara González Tosat Hispanic Digital Newspapers in the United States Informes del Observatorio / Observatorio Reports. 016-12/2015EN ISSN: 2373-874X (online) doi: 10.15427/OR016-12/2015EN Instituto Cervantes at FAS - Harvard University © Instituto Cervantes at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of Harvard University quantity and quality.1 The central idea is that the significant and valuable Spanish-American presence in the sports arena has a very positive impact on the collective psyche of the immigrant community to which these athletes belong. Moreover, this impact extends beyond the limited context of sport since, in addition to the obvious economic benefits for many families, it enhances the image of the Spanish-speaking community in the United States. At the level of language, contact allows English to influence Spanish, especially in the area of vocabulary, which Spanish assimilates and adapts according to its own peculiar structures. Baseball, which was invented in the United States during the first half of the nineteenth century, was introduced into Spanish America about thirty or forty years later.
