2.0 Fest Programme Day 1 2.0 Fest 2020 Festival Programme Part of Locked Down, Looking Up Funded by Arts Council England 31st July - 1st August www.space.org.uk 0207 515 7799 The best playwrights have an ear for dialogue, which is why we’ve commissioned some of our favourites to celebrate the art of conversation. 8 short plays, written to be performed online by 2 actors in separate locations. Message from Adam Hemming As with Two Fest, back at the Space in February, 2.0 Fest is, first and foremost, a celebration of playwrights. Unlike nearly all of our other festivals and programmes, there is no open application process. We handpick playwrights whose work we’ve enjoyed and commission them to write something fresh. We put our immense faith in their undoubted talent and, on this occasion, challenged them to create a duologue to be performed online. We have been handsomely rewarded by the plays they have created. Whilst all of the plays are very different, it’s always interesting to see what themes emerge from a collection of work written in the same period. What would these troubling, peculiar, isolated times throw up? For me, motherhood and identity come through strongly but am sure there will be different ones for different viewers. We look forward to chatting about these in our post-show zoom hangouts and hope you’ll join us for those. 2.0 Fest also gives us the chance to work with some of our favourite directors and actors whilst meeting some incredible new ones. We’ve been so impressed with the work they’ve put in and hope you enjoy the fruits of their labour. As ever, we’re hugely grateful for the dramaturgical abilities of our wonderful Literary Manager, Mike Carter and the passion he has for working with playwrights Homecoming By Gemma Lawrence Two women, fifty years apart in age, find they have more in common than they thought. • Shakespeare on Film, Video & Stage
William Shakespeare on Film, Video and Stage Titles in bold red font with an asterisk (*) represent the crème de la crème – first choice titles in each category. These are the titles you’ll probably want to explore first. Titles in bold black font are the second- tier – outstanding films that are the next level of artistry and craftsmanship. Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter. Ṣ Publicity Contact: Sales Contact: The DDA Group Rocket Science [email protected] [email protected] 1 Synopsis On a warm spring day in 1924, house maid and foundling Jane Fairchild (Odessa Young) finds herself alone on Mother’s Day. Her employers, Mr and Mrs Niven (Colin Firth and Olivia Colman), are out and she has the rare chance to spend quality time with her secret lover, Paul (Josh O’Connor), the boy from the manor house nearby who is Jane’s long-term love despite the fact that he’s engaged to be married to another woman, a childhood friend and daughter of his parents’ friends. But events that neither can foresee will change the course of Jane’s life forever. A Statement from Director Eva Husson The Mothering Sunday script fell on my lap like a little spark of pure energy visiting me from a galaxy, far, far away. I was working on a TV show, when I got an email from my agent – she knew I was drowning in work, but she said to me; “Read this. You have to. You’ll understand why.” I read the script in one day, in fragments of 5 or 10 minutes, I always made sure I went back to it because I realised I had to. I finished the script in tears. Mothering Sunday seemed to have, somehow, found its way to me, and there it was, this wonderful screenplay, speaking to me, playing a frequency that opened me up like only the most honest works of art do.

This new production of Noël Coward’s sharp comedy of social mores opens at the Gielgud Theatre on 18 March 2014, with previews from 1 March. In order to observe a spiritualist first-hand for a planned novel, writer Charles Condomine (Charles Edwards) and wife Ruth (Janie Dee) invite friends the Bradmans (Simon Jones and Sandra Dickinson) to dinner and a séance with local clairvoyant Madame Arcati (Angela Lansbury), whom they are certain is a fake. That all changes when the ghost of his first wife, Elvira (Jemima Rooper) is summoned - and overstays her welcome in the following days, causing a rift between Charles and his at first disbelieving and then jealous second wife. The feuding wives, ghost and flesh, hatch plot and counter plot to sabotage each other’s and Charles’ existence – but will they succeed? Angela Lansbury plays Madame Arcati. Her Broadway performance as Coward’s infamous clairvoyant earned her the 2009 Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress, her fifth Tony Award. Her professional career spans more than a half-century, during which she has flourished, first as a star of motion pictures, then as a Broadway musical star and most recently as the star of Murder, She Wrote. The actress made her Broadway debut in 1957 when she starred as Bert Lahr’s wife in the French farce, Hotel Paradiso.
