  • Growth of Urban Population in Malwa (Punjab)
International Journal of Scientific and Research Publications, Volume 8, Issue 7, July 2018 34 ISSN 2250-3153 Growth of Urban Population in Malwa (Punjab) Kamaljit Kaur DOI: 10.29322/IJSRP.8.7.2018.p7907 http://dx.doi.org/10.29322/IJSRP.8.7.2018.p7907 Abstract: This study deals with the spatial analysis of growth of urban population. Malwa region has been taken as a case study. During 1991-2001, the urban growth has been shown in Malwa region of Punjab. The large number of new towns has emerged in this region during 1991-2001 periods. Urban growth of Malwa region as well as distribution of urban centres is closely related to accessibility and modality factors. The large urban centres are located along major arteries. International border with an unfriendly neighbour hinders urban growth. It indicates that secondary activities have positive correlation with urban growth. More than 90% of urban population of Malwa region lives in large and medium towns of Punjab. More than 50% lives in large towns. Malwa region is agriculturally very prosperous area. So Mandi towns are well distributed throughout the region. Keywords: Growth, Urban, Population, Development. I. INTRODUCTION The distribution of urban population and its growth reflect the economic structure of population as well as economic growth of the region. The urban centers have different socio economic value systems, degree of socio-economic awakening than the rural areas. Although Urbanisation is an inescapable process and is related to the economic growth of the region but regional imbalances in urbanization creates problems for Planners so urban growth need to be channelized in planned manner and desired direction.

Current World Environment Vol. 11(2), 388-398 (2016) Analysis of Water Level Fluctuations and TDS Variations in the Groundwater at Mewat (Nuh) District, Haryana (India) PRIYANKA1, GOpal KRISHAN2, LALIT MOHAN SHARMA3, BRIJESH KUMAR Yadav4 and N.C. GHOSH2 1TERI University, New Delhi India. 2National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee, India. 3Sehgal Foundation, Gurgaon, India. 4IIT-Roorkee, Roorkee, India. http://dx.doi.org/10.12944/CWE.11.2.06 (Received: July 18, 2016; Accepted: August 02, 2016) ABSTRACT Groundwater is the major source for fulfilling the water needs of domestic and agricultural sectors in Mewat district, Haryana, India and its continuous use has put an enormous pressure on the groundwater resource, which along with low rainfall and variable geographical conditions lead to the declining water levels. The other problem of this area is high salinity which is reported intruding to the freshwater zone1. Taking into account the twin problem of declining water level and high salinity the study was taken up jointly by National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee; Sehgal Foundation, Gurgaon and Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. Groundwater level and TDS (Total dissolved solids) data for pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons for the time period of 2011–2015 of 40 monitoring wells developed by Sehgal Foundation, Gurgaon was collected and analysed. It has been found that the groundwater level is decreasing in the area while TDS values show inconsistent trends during 2011-15. Further monitoring of the wells is continued to get the more information on water level and TDS which will help in facilitating the researchers in finding out the applicable solutions for the above problems in the Mewat, Haryana.

THE DRUG MENACE: DIMENSIONS, TRENDS AND TRIBULATIONS IN PUNJAB Prof. P.S. Verma The use of illicit psychoactive substances, which is relatively concentrated among youths, has assumed global dimensions. It is not bound by territory or, for that matter, caste, class, religion, ethnicity, region and country. As a matter of fact, the tentacles of illicit drugs have spread far and wide covering every community and country in the world. According to some scholars, “the pursuit of consciousness alteration through the use of both legal and illegal psychoactive substances is a pervasive feature of humans” and “there are only a few recorded instances of societies anywhere in history that have lived without the use” of such types of substances1. However, the traditional drug use of plant based natural substances like opium, cannabis etc. was limited mainly to socio-cultural ceremonies, festive occasions, meditation and medicinal purposes. It was neither stigmatized nor had assumed any widespread epidemic dimensions. But this was changed when the use of narco-drugs had become a health concern threatening humans, especially in the nineteenth century.
