It contains five major categories of information: (1) "Specialistson Japan and Japanese Studies," an extensive state-by-state directory ofresource persons who are either Japan scholars at the post-secondary school level or elementary and secondary educators whoare knowledgeable about Japan; (2) "Sources of Information," which contains both generalized and specific information and listsgroups or institutions related to teaching about Japan; (3) "Curriculum Materials," which includes lessons, activities, and products developed by elementary and secondary educators, outreach centers, and othergroups and organizations; (4) "Innovative Programs," which provides examplesof innovative practices in teaching about Japan; and (5) "Exchange Programs" which lists programs available for students andeducators who wish to visit Japan. "Giri" takes many fOtMS such as duties to family Or tb him-relatedpersons, but in the Main, it means paying debts or obligationsto the WOrld. The Council of Chief State Sdhool Officers viewsthis guide and the Japan Database projectas a form of "giti," designed to educate the states and territories aboutthe people of Japan. This sense of obligation is specifically directed to the Japan=U.S. FriendShip Commission. This commiSSioh haS been responsible for not only fundingthiS project but also; for many years, asSiStihgthe Chief State SChobl Offiders by providing funds forexchanges with the Japanese; These programs have allowed many Chief state Sdh6o1 Officers to learn aboutJapan and to share this privilege with other edttatibrialleaders in their respective States and territories. This project continues efforts begun bythe Cbuncil, through its International Education Office,to increase global knowledge and awareness in the SdhbOlS. This guide cbiltainS five major categoriesof information: 1; SpecialiSt8 on Japan and Japanese Studies: 2; Sources of Information about Japan; 3; CurriculuM MaterialS on Japan; 4; Activities and Innovative Teaching and Learning Programs about Japan; 5; Educational and Cultural ExchangePrograms with Japan. The foundation for thit guide isa computerized data- base program on Japan developed througha grant from the Japan-U.S; Friendship Commission. The information in each of the five categorie8 Was gatheredfrom a variety of sources. Specialists are either Japan scholarsat the post- secondary school level Or elementaryand secondary educators who are knowledgeable about Japan. Hundreds of scholars and K-12 educators respondedto a letter requesting their participation in the Database project. Sources of Information about Japanwere gathered from a variety of places. Groups or institutions directly related to teaching about Japan inthe schools are listed iii under Sources. More general sources are also listed, allbWing users to begin with generalizedinformation abbUt Japan, With the expectation that;as their knowledge grOW, they WOUld Seek out more specificareas of interest. CurtictliiM Materials on Japan include lessons, actiVitieS, and prOducts developed by elementaryand secondary educa ors, outreach centers; and othergroups and organizationS concerned With providing resourceson Japan for elementary and secondary Students and educators; There was no attempt to include those teaching materialson Japan, both print and nonprint, that are :ijailable fromcommercial publishers and media companies. Activities and IhnbVative Teaching and Learning Programs about Japan is a category designedto share examples of innovations it teaching abbUt Japanthat exist in the states and territories. A few examples emerged from the search, but not as manyas antidipated.
