Appointment with Death

Agatha Christie

Appointment with Death Agatha Christie Among the towering red cliffs of Petra sits the corpse of Mrs Boynton, a tiny puncture mark on her wrist the only sign of what has killed her. Hercule Poirot has only 24 hours to solve the mystery.

A tyrannical old martinet, a mental sadist and the incarnation of evil. These were only three of the character descriptions levelled at Mrs. Boynton, the matriarch who kept her family totally dependent on her. But did she really deserve to die on the excursion to beautiful Petra? Hercule Poirot hears about the murder and feels compelled to investigate-despite the family's request not to do so. Do they have something to hide and, if so, can they keep it hidden from this master sleuth?

I don't know why but I thought this was a completely different story before starting. I've seen this as a play by a different name so - imagine my surprised when I realized I knew this story!

But seeing it as a play DID NOT take away from my love for the story. Agatha Christie is a story teller like no other. I loved Poirot (I laughed out loud when someone in the book called him Little Poirot! lol) as always and I loved his little schemes and abilities to notice what others do not.

This book is broken into two parts - a before and an after (even the chapter numbers start over!) so the book flew because it felt much shorter and quicker than it was.

David Schaafsma says

“You are a detective, are you not?” “Yes, mademoiselle.” “A very well-known detective? “The very best detective in the world,” said Poirot, stating it as a simple truth, no more, no less.

The best opening to an AC mystery for me yet:

"You do see, don't you, that she's got to be killed?"

Poirot overhears a brother try to persuade his sister to kill their tyrannical and sadistic and morbidly obese mother, and why not?! We quickly learn that even if you are a complete pacifist that you might see why it is the world might be a better place without her. Certainly her children, completed cut off from the world until this trip to Jerusalem.

And she does die, the old bat; their mother, beset by a heart condition, is found dead in her chair, after an arduous hike in archaeology-rich Petra. Only good can come of her death! Why bother investigating, Poirot? But from the first, at least two of her poor, beleaguered children are suspects! Or is this too obvious a red herring?

On the other hand, Christie the cat plays with us, mere mortal mice minds; as she has Poirot say to Mssr. Cote: “Your position is impeccable. If this were a work of fiction, you should strongly be suspected on that point.”

Poirot disagrees that it doesn’t matter if a murder has occurred. “I do not approve of murder.” But is this murder? [However, can even we imagine Christie writing a book about a death from heart attack?] [No.]

Colonel Carbury smiled and raised his glass across the table [to Poirot] : “Well, here’s to crime.”

Indeed, here’s to crime, and an average Poirot performance, which is to say, pretty darned good.

Huh.. well... When Poirot pointed out the real murderer it was rather anti-climatic....I was probably expecting a lot more drama ? End of political ambitions and career as a motive for murder.

With all the talk of Ginerva's sheikhs coming to capture her and all the pshycological talk between the two doctors present, I was expecting something more dramatic.

Well anyway my guess of who the murderer was completely wrong. I was thinking that perhaps Dr Gerald had taken a fancy to the beau

This is almost like a tourist brochure for Israel and Petra. The plot has a great sinister beginning and in true Christie fashion there are many with motive for murder. In his typical fashion Poirot goes after the psychology of the murderer. However the end is quite dampening and disappointing. Average read.

A repeat read. But as decades have passed it was almost like a new story to me. But few hazy memories floated in while reading though these didn't help me to pinpoint the actual killer. I console myself thst I.atleast knew foe sure who the killers aren't.

One of the better Christies .

Quite recommended .

Re-read on October 2016 I stand by my rating :)) *** 10+++ Stars

This is perhaps one of my most favourite Christie's. No matter how many times I read it (last count was 8), this story does not get old, all those descriptions and sequences retain their power to thrill me even when I read it today. I simply love this book and the mystery of it. This has nothing to do with anything Jerusalem, archaeology, historical artifacts. Nope. Absolutely not.

This is one of my personal favourites.

An obnoxious old woman, Mrs. Boynton (who used to the warden of a women's jail) has kept her daughter and stepchildren in psychological bondage for their whole lives: she gets her kicks from exercising control over other human beings. Obviously, they wouldn't mind if somebody murdered her.

Well, what's hoped for happens. In the Red City of Petra where the family is on tour, Mrs. Boynton is discovered dead with a puncture mark on her wrist, sitting outside a cave on the mountain trail. And - as is the norm with Christie - any of her children could have done it.

But unfortunately for the murderer, Hercule Poirot is also part of the tour party...

------

This story is exquisitely plotted: there is no dependence on coincidence. As usual, the emphasis here is on the personality of the victim. If we follow the clues diligently as Dame Agatha provides them from the first chapter onwards, or if we correctly interpret the ten important points Poirot notes down, the identity of the murderer is obvious. But we won't. We will be flabbergasted at the end, when Poirot reveals all, how simple it was.

A challenge to armchair detectives: concentrate on the character of Mrs. Boynton, mull over the points Poirot notes down, and try to guess the murderer before all is revealed.

Once again, Christie has written a mystery with an ending I didn't see coming. This time, I can't decide if I think she left enough clues to lead to the culprit, however. Normally, I find myself saying "oh, yeah!" as I read the outcome, but this time I thought it was a little shaky. But, as usual, Christie does a beautiful job fleshing out the characters of a well-rounded cast, with plenty of doubt cast among almost all of them. I changed my mind a few different times as to the possible outcome, but still didn't get it right!

I love that Christie devotes pages and pages of detail leading up to the murder, rather than just starting the book out with the murder then recounting everything that had happened through the various characters' eyes. I find myself always paying close attention to what is happening and storing away possible useful information, just waiting for Poirot to start his investigation. This particular book also had an epilogue that I thought was interesting and I appreciated it for this story. Despite what I think may be a lack of evidence to point towards the culprit, I think that anyone who likes mysteries would enjoy this book. Agatha Christie never fails to please! mark monday says

PDF File: Appointment with Death... 8 Read and Download Ebook Appointment with Death...

Poirot is on a little holiday in Egypt, and his poor unsuspecting fellow travellers have no idea that this means one of them, at least, will surely be murdered before the trip is over. As he closes his hotel window one evening, he overhears two unidentified characters talking in another room. “You do see, don't you, that she's got to be killed?” Poirot smilingly dismisses it – they're probably discussing a play, he thinks, or a mystery novel.

After this great start, Poirot recedes into the background for a bit, while the reader is introduced to all the other characters. The main group is the Boynton family, a strange and nervy bunch ruled over by their manipulative and sadistic matriarch, Mrs Boynton – one of Christie's greatest creations, in my opinion. Her step-children are all grown up in the physical sense, but have never managed to cut loose from her control. Lennox, the eldest, is married to Nadine, the least affected by Mrs Boynton since she wasn't brainwashed in childhood as the others were. Then there are the two younger step-children, Carol and Raymond, who are desperate for freedom but caught like moths in a flame, unable to work out how to escape. But the most troubled member of the family is the youngest, Ginevra, Mrs Boynton's own child, now on the brink of womanhood and driven to the edge of madness by her mother's evil games.

There are others on the trip too, who will all find themselves involved with the Boyntons in one way or another. Sarah King provides the main perspective, though in the third person. Newly qualified as a doctor, she is concerned about what she sees happening to the younger Boyntons. There's also a French psychologist on the trip, Dr Gerrard, and it's through the conversations of the two doctors that Christie lays out the psychology of Mrs Boynton for the readers. Add in an elderly spinster who's abroad for the first time, an American who's in love with Nadine, a British lady politician who does a good line in bullying on her own account, and the Arab servants, and there's a plentiful supply of suspects and witnesses for Poirot to interview when the inevitable happens...

A bit like with Dickens, my favourite Christie tends to be the one I've just read, and this is no exception. For the Egyptian setting, which Christie paints in shades of exotic menace; for the great plot, one of her best; for the psychologically diverse and well drawn group of characters; and most of all for the brooding, malignant presence of Mrs Boynton, a bloated, poisonous spider at the centre of her web, this is a top-rank novel from the pen of the High Queen of Crime.

Much of the first half of the novel is taken up with Christie allowing each character their turn in the spotlight, and the opportunity to say or do something that will look deeply suspicious later on. I've read it so often that, of course, I spot all the clues now as they happen but, for me, this contains the best delivered crucial clue in all the detective fiction I've read. It's hidden in plain sight – it's right there, and yet I defy you to see it. And if that's not enough, just before the denouement Poirot lays out every clue in a list for the local British dignitary, Colonel Carbury. Fair play taken to its extreme, and yet the case is still utterly baffling until Poirot brilliantly solves it, at which point it's completely satisfying.

I listened to 's narration, which is excellent as always. He doesn't “act” the characters, except for Poirot, so no falsely high voices for the women and so on, but he subtly differentiates between them so it's always clear who's speaking, and he gives them American or English accents as appropriate. For his version of Poirot, Fraser reproduces a very close approximation to 's Poirot accent, giving the narration a wonderful familiarity for fans of the TV adaptations.

Fabulous stuff – I'm having so much fun listening to the audiobooks of all these favourite Christies. It's a great way to make even the ones I know inside out feel fresh again. And for new readers, what a treat! Highly recommended. www.fictionfanblog.wordpress.com

So glad to find a Christie book that I don't remember clearly!

An American woman has her family bound to her through psychological torture. She enjoys tormenting people, and takes it out on her isolated family for amusement. But on a trip to Petra, she is exposed to the outer world, as are her family. Suddenly, one day, she is found dead. Though, nobody really cared for the woman, Hercules Poirot does not approve of murder. He sets out to find the truth.

I couldn't guess the murderer at all, though I kept pointing fingers at the different persons in the group. But never at the murderer!

My only complaint with the book is the lack of background for a couple of important characters. (view spoiler). Other than this, a brilliant book. Even without the mystery element, I enjoyed reading about the obnoxious Mrs. Boynton and how she clutched her family tight around her.
