One in this series of Agatha Christie mysteries featuring Belgian dandy and private detective Hercule Poirot. Host Diana Rigg introduces the program, which deals with potential foul play committed during the celebration of Guy Fawkes Day. On the night of the festivities, Poirot tells his assistant, Captain Arthur Hastings, and Chief Inspector James Japp that it would be a great time to commit a murder due to the loud fireworks exploding over the city. The next day, Japp calls to inform Poirot that a suicide of possibly fishy circumstances -- involving the Poirot: Murder in the Mews Barbara Allen, found shot through the head -- did indeed occur the previous night. Visiting the crime scene, Poirot and Japp find evidence inconsistent with suicide, particularly no key to the locked room where Barbara was found, and a broken cufflink left on the floor. Later, Hastings introduces Poirot and Japp to a young neighborhood boy who offers some helpful eyewitness evidence. Later, Poirot and Japp meet with Laverton West, who is stunned to hear about his fiancee's death, Poirot: Murder in the Mews seemingly more concerned with the media's reaction. Now positive that they are dealing with a murder, Poirot and Japp examine their suspects. They discuss the fact that two brands of cigarettes were in the victim's ashtray. Visiting Plenderleith again, Poirot and Japp try to get more information on the man that visited Barbara on the day of her death, Major Eustace, who may have been blackmailing her. Meeting with Laverton West again, Poirot and Japp try to cull information about Barbara's relationship with Eustace and to learn about Laverton West's alibi on the night in question. Next, Poirot and Japp confront Eustace, questioning what happened between him and Barbara on the night of her Poirot: Murder in the Mews. Upon realizing that it was Eustace's broken cufflink next to Barbara's body, Poirot: Murder in the Mews arrests the man. Later, Poirot spies on Plenderleith as she plays golf, during which he notices a series of broken clubs in consecutive trash cans and then catches her throwing a briefcase into the lake. Certain that Plenderleith is the culprit, Poirot calls her into his office, where he reveals how he found the answers to Barbara's death. However, the solution proves more twisted than anyone suspected, including Poirot. Pierce John Cording … Cast, Div. The victim was engaged to be married and seemingly had no cause to take her own life. Did she? Or was it murder in the mews? Written by don minifie The setting for "Murder in the Mews" is in London, so Hercule Poirot doesn't have to dirty his shoes as he sometimes does in trips to the country. All of Poirot's usual entourage are in this episode of Agatha Christie's famous Belgian detective. On reflecting, after having watched this episode again recently, it seems that some keys clue were given more obviously than in most Poirot mysteries. But of course, that's on reflecting and knowing what it was that we had seen. Poirot's gray cells Poirot: Murder in the Mews many miniscule details and store them. Then, when added to during the course of his sleuthing, the solution comes to light as these bits and pieces come together to form a picture. Trouble is, it doesn't work that way for most of we mortals. And that's all the more food for entertainment in these wonderful mysteries. The humor in this episode concerns Poirot's over-starched collars and the seeming inability of the laundry to correct the matter. Poirot: Murder in the Mews has written them many letters about this problem. Some great dialog ensues over this between Poirot and Miss Lemon. Here are some favorite lines from "Murder in the Mews. It's sacrilege to tamper with them. That laundry is in the pay of my enemies. This is a murder we're dealing with. Poirot, they just don't understand the letters. That was the question I asked myself as I sat in the train watching the flat Essex landscape outside. How long ago was it that I had taken this selfsame journey? Had felt (ridiculously) that the best of life was over for me! Wounded in that war that for me would always be the war – the war that was wiped out now by a second and a more desperate war. It had seemed in 1916 to young Arthur Hastings that he was already old and mature. How little had I realized that, for me, life was only then beginning. Think Downton Abbey, Upstairs Downstairs, Colin Firth, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith and Emma Thompson for examples. Dr. Carelli-speaks with an Italian accent that does not have to be that authentic. Inspector Japp is decidedly working class. His accent is more rough, less polished. Think the servants of Downton Abbey or the Northerners of Game of Thrones. Think more Michael Caine, Bob Hoskins, Catherine Tate, and Sean Bean for examples. Miss Treadwell (female, late 20’s-60’s) She is the faithful servant, but at the same time knows all “the dirty laundry” of her employers. Sir Claud Amory (male, 50’s plus) He is the irascible Lord of the manor, who has no affection for his relatives and is devoted solely to his scientific discoveries. Caroline Amory (female, 50’s plus) Claud’s dotty younger, maiden sister who never stops talking. She is very conservative, innocent, and prone to not quite getting the full picture of what goes on around her. She has no idea that half of what she says is funny and often inappropriate. Richard Amory (male, early 30’s-mid 40’s) He is the only son of Claud Amory. He’d rather pursue a military career then be under his father’s thumb. He’s not stupid, but he’s not the scientific genius that his father is. Newly married, he is very much in love with his wife Lucia who he married after a brief whirlwind courtship. • Appointment with Death
PART ONE CHAPTER ONE 'Don't you agree that she's got to be killed?' The words seemed to hang in the still night air, before disappearing into the darkness. It was Hercule Poirot's first night in the city of Jerusalem, and he was shutting his hotel-room window - the night air was a danger to his health! - when he overheard these words. He smiled. 'Even on holiday, I am reminded of crime,' he said to himself. 'No doubt someone is talking about a play or a book.' As he walked over to his bed, he thought about the voice he had heard. It was the voice of a man - or a boy - and had sounded nervous and excited. 'I will remember that voice,' said Hercule Poirot to himself, as he lay down to sleep. 'Yes, I will remember.' In the room next door, Raymond Boynton and his sister Carol looked out of their window into the dark-blue night sky. Raymond said again, 'Don't you agree that she's got to be killed? It can't go on like this - it can't. We must do something - and what else can we do?' Carol said in a hopeless voice, 'If only we could just leave somehow! But we can't - we can't.' 'People would say we were crazy,' said Raymond bitterly. 'They would wonder why we can't just walk out -' Carol said slowly, 'Perhaps we are crazy! ' 'Perhaps we are,' agreed Raymond. 'After all, we are calmly planning to kill our own mother! ' 'She isn't our real mother!' said Carol.
