In addition, the club has also announced that for each ticket purchased for the event on Saturday, June 22, five dollars will be donated to the Pikes Peak Community Foundation to assist victims of the Black Forest Fire. Also, anyone who has lost their home in the recent fire or is still currently evacuated can come to the game for free by stopping by the Sky Sox box office any time leading up to the event. This celebrity softball game has been in the works since October of 2012 and has always been centered on recognizing and raising funds for our local heroes in the region’s Police and Fire Departments. The event will serve as an opportunity for the entire community to come together and recognize and celebrate those brave men and women, but after the recent wildfire in Black Forest, the Colorado Springs Police and Fire Departments, in conjunction with the Sky Sox, have decided that the focus and fundraising efforts will go to the people in most need from the recent fire. All money raised during the event via the newly announced ticket donation and the auctioning of specialty game-worn jerseys and baseball memorabilia will go to the Pikes Peak Community Foundation’s “Emergency Relief Fund” which was established for victims of the Black Forest Fire. This fund is modeled after last year’s Waldo Canyon Firefighters Fund which received an outpouring of community support. In addition, Care & Share Food Bank will be on hand at the event accepting any nonperishable food item donations and Springs Rescue Mission will be accepting clothing, household items and clean-up items like work gloves, rakes, shovels and trash bags. Pikes Peak Community Foundation will also be on hand at the game accepting any monetary donations that individuals would like to make beyond their ticket purchase. The event will be held at Security Service Field on Saturday, June 22 at 7:05 PM and will salute the brave men and women of the Colorado Springs and El Paso County Fire and Safety Departments who willingly fight every day to keep our community safe and secure. The two teams will consist of members of the Colorado Springs Police and Fire Departments, including two celebrity managers in Chief Pete Carey for the Police and Interim Chief Tommy Smith for Fire. Another local celebrity who will be playing in the game is Jerri Marr. During last year’s Waldo Canyon Fire, Marr’s tremendous leadership skills and honest, engaging presence on everyone’s television screens endeared her to all residents in Southern Colorado. In addition, each team will also include several former Major League baseball players, local media members and local dignitaries. Highlighting the former Major League players who will be participating in the event is Hall of Fame pitcher Rollie Fingers, who saved over 340 games in his career and won both the Cy Young Award and American League MVP Award in 1981. The night will culminate with a tremendous fireworks display following the game. As part of the game day activities, the teams will don unique custom made jerseys each representing their respective department. These unique, game worn jerseys will be auctioned off during and after the game with 100% of the proceeds benefitting the Pikes Peak Community Foundation. During the game, there will be a special silent auction of all the players’ jerseys which will be held in the concourse at the main entrance of the stadium. Following the game, a live auction will be held on the Sky Sox dugout that will feature a select number of jerseys including Rollie Fingers’. All jerseys will be autographed by the player that wore them and will be accompanied with a certificate of authenticity. The MLBPAA will also auction off a variety of baseball memorabilia during the game with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the Pikes Peak Community Foundation. Tickets for the event come in two different options and can be purchased online at www.skysox.com, in person at the Sky Sox box office or by calling (719) 591-SOXX. Five dollars from each ticket purchased will be donated to the Pikes Peak Community Foundation to help victims of the Black Forest Fire. A limited number of special VIP package tickets are available for $30 and include: o A general admission ticket to the game. o Access to a special VIP autograph session before the game with the former Major League players, including Rollie Fingers. o Membership in the MLBPAA. Regular general admission tickets to the game will be $10. Former Major League players that will be participating in the game include: Rollie Fingers: Hall of Fame pitcher, Cy Young Award Winner & AL MVP in 1981, played 18 seasons with Oakland, San Diego & Milwaukee, won three World Series with Oakland 1972-74. We are honored to pay tribute to our local heroes for not only the heroics they showed during these two fires but also for what they do day-in and day-out to make Colorado Springs one of the best communities in America.” For more information please contact Mike Hobson at (719) 597-1449 or through email at [email protected]. About the MLBPAA The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association (MLBPAA) was formed in 1982 in order to promote the game of baseball, raise money for charity, inspire and educate youth through positive sport images and protect the dignity of the game through former players. A nonprofit organization, the MLBPAA establishes a place where a player's drive for excellence and achievement on the field can continue long after they take their last steps off the professional diamond. Alumni players find the MLBPAA to be a vital tool to become involved in charity and community philanthropy. To learn more about the MLBPAA, visit www.baseballalumni.com or call (719) 477-1870. ### .

Christian Brothers Baseball History 1930 - 1959 By James McNamara, Class of 1947 Joseph McNamara, Class of 1983 1 Introductory Note This is an attempt to chronicle the rich and colorful history of baseball played at Christian Brothers High School from the years 1930 to 1959. Much of the pertinent information for such an endeavor exists only in yearbooks or in scrapbooks from long ago. Baseball is a spring sport, and often yearbooks were published before the season’s completion. There are even years where yearbooks where not produced at all, as is the case for the years 1930 to 1947. Prep sports enjoyed widespread coverage in the local papers, especially during the hard years of the Great Depression and World War II. With the aid of old microfilm machines at the City Library, it was possible to resurrect some of those memorable games as told in the pages of the Sacramento Bee and Union newspapers. But perhaps the best mode of research, certainly the most enter- taining, is the actual testimony of the ballplayers themselves. Their recall of events from 50 plus years ago, even down to the most minor of details is simply astonishing. Special thanks to Kathleen Davis, Terri Barbeau, Joe Franzoia, Gil Urbano, Vince Pisani, Billy Rico, Joe Sheehan, and Frank McNamara for opening up their scrapbooks and sharing photographs. This document is by no means a complete or finished account. It is indeed a living document that requires additions, subtractions, and corrections to the ongoing narrative. Respectfully submitted, James McNamara, Class of 1947 Joseph McNamara, Class of 1983 2 1930 s the 1920’s came to a close, The Gaels of Christian Brothers High School A had built a fine tradition of baseball excellence unmatched in the Sacra- mento area.

    Estimated Age Effects in Baseball

ESTIMATED AGE EFFECTS IN BASEBALL By Ray C. Fair October 2005 Revised March 2007 COWLES FOUNDATION DISCUSSION PAPER NO. 1536 COWLES FOUNDATION FOR RESEARCH IN ECONOMICS YALE UNIVERSITY Box 208281 New Haven, Connecticut 06520-8281 http://cowles.econ.yale.edu/ Estimated Age Effects in Baseball Ray C. Fair¤ Revised March 2007 Abstract Age effects in baseball are estimated in this paper using a nonlinear xed- effects regression. The sample consists of all players who have played 10 or more full-time years in the major leagues between 1921 and 2004. Quadratic improvement is assumed up to a peak-performance age, which is estimated, and then quadratic decline after that, where the two quadratics need not be the same. Each player has his own constant term. The results show that aging effects are larger for pitchers than for batters and larger for baseball than for track and eld, running, and swimming events and for chess. There is some evidence that decline rates in baseball have decreased slightly in the more recent period, but they are still generally larger than those for the other events. There are 18 batters out of the sample of 441 whose performances in the second half of their careers noticeably exceed what the model predicts they should have been. All but 3 of these players played from 1990 on. The estimates from the xed-effects regressions can also be used to rank players. This ranking differs from the ranking using lifetime averages because it adjusts for the different ages at which players played. It is in effect an age-adjusted ranking.

FOUR DECADES OF SEATTLE MARINERS BASEBALL Each month during the 2017 season, Mariners Magazine will highlight a different era to celebrate the club’s 40th Anniversary. In this issue, we’ll take a look at the 1977 through 1983 seasons. (Part 1 of 6) By Mike Gastineau The first game in Seattle Mariners history was played on April 6, 1977, in front of a sellout crowd of 57,762. In an historic twist Diego Segui was the Opening Day starting pitcher for the Mariners. Eight years earlier, on October 1, 1969, Segui pitched the 9th inning of what would be the final game in the Seattle Pilots history. He gave up a run that tied the game but got the win when the Pilots scored in their half of the inning. His luck was not as good in 1977 as the Angels chased him in the 4th inning of a 7-0 loss.
