We at the Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation (CCGF) decided back then that the anniversary was worth celebrating – with a lasting gift to the city of Cleveland. The executive board soon embarked on a campaign to build a plaza that will serve as a main stage for One World Day and a performance space for arts and culture events from spring through fall.

The project will be located near our kiosk, in land along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. It will be 100-feet in diameter and ringed with wrought-iron figures depicting a circle dance. An entryway will feature a medallion with the CCGF logo and will sit in a pool of cascading water, the symbol of life and renewal.

We’re happy to report that the project is coming along well. Our capital campaign is proceeding: we’re raising funds for construction and for reserves that will help us maintain the plaza for years to come.

Our dream is for the plaza to draw residents from the neighborhood, city, region, state, country and the world to the Cultural A MESSAGE TO YOUNG AMERICANS OF SYRIAN ORIGIN Gardens to hear music, revel in a dance By KHALIL GIBRAN (1919) performance, take part in an educational forum, and enjoy even more this beautiful treasure in the heart of Cleveland. I believe in you, and I believe in your destiny. I believe that you are contributors to this new civilization. Please join us in this effort. For information on how to donate, call 216-213-4045. Thank you. I believe that you have inherited from your forefathers an ancient dream, a song, a prophecy, which you can proudly lay as a gift of gratitude upon the lap of America. … I believe that you can say to Emerson and Whitman and James, “In my veins runs the blood of the poets and wise men of old, and it is my desire to come to you and receive, but I shall not come with empty hands.

…It is to stand before the towers of New York, Washington, Chicago and San Francisco saying in your heart, “I am the descendant of a people that built Damascus, and Byblos, Tyre and Sidon and Antioch, and now I am here to build with you, and with a will.”

It is to be proud of being an American, but it is also to be proud that your fathers and mothers came from a land upon which God laid His gracious hand and raised His messengers.

Young Americans of Syrian origin, I believe in you!

The Cleveland Cultural Gardens are part of Rockefeller Park Congratulations which consists of land donated by John D. Rockefeller on Cleveland’s Centennial celebration in 1896. TO THE In 1916, a journalist and Shakespeare enthusiast named Leo Weidenthal helped establish the Shakespeare Garden which later CLEVELAND CULTURAL became the British Garden. Weidenthal saw the multiplicity of nationalities that were in or coming to Cleveland and had a vision GARDENS FEDERATION of using this City of Cleveland land as a tribute to them. The second garden was the Hebrew Garden and it was dedicated ON ITS in 1926. Later in the 1920’s and 30’s other nationalities began working on gardens to represent their own heritage. After the Great Depression, much of the infrastructure was installed with the assistance of the WPA (Work Projects Administration) including bridges and retaining walls.

rd The history and growth of the Cultural Gardens is a mirror of the history and growth of Cleveland. The early 73 gardens were predominantly European (Italian, German, Czech, Polish, Hungarian, Irish, Slovak, etc.) because that’s who had been settling in Cleveland. ONE WORLD DAY! As people from other areas came to Cleveland, interest in gardens for their heritage grew and new and proposed gardens focused on the Middle East, Asia and Africa. Soon there will be 35 or so gardens representing many of the diverse nationalities that make Cleveland home.
