FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE THREE MORE WCHA PLAYERS SELECTED IN 2018 NWHL DRAFT Ohio State’s Lauren Boyle, Wisconsin’s Emily Clark and Minnesota’s Nicole Schammel all selected on the draft’s second and final day BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Dec. 20, 2018 – Three more women’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) seniors heard their names called on the second and final day of the 2018 National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL) Draft, giving the league six of the 25 players selected overall. Ohio State University blueliner Lauren Boyle was chosen by the Minnesota Whitecaps with their third-round pick (14th overall), University of Wisconsin forward Emily Clark was the next selection, tabbed by the Boston Pride (15th overall) and University of Minnesota senior Nicole Schammel was the fifth-round choice of the Buffalo Beauts (23rd overall). “We are again ecstatic for Lauren, Emily and Nicole – and all of our deserving WCHA student-athletes – to have a chance at pursuing their professional hockey dreams,” said WCHA Vice President and Women’s League Commissioner Katie Million. “We applaud all six WCHA women chosen in the 2018 NWHL Draft, along with their coaches and programs, for the incredible dedication to developing their games and becoming professional draft picks. We look forward to watching them excel in the second half of the 2018- 19 college season and beyond!” Boyle, a native of Los Gatos, Calif. who played her prep hockey at Eden Prairie (Minn.) High School, has been a key part of Ohio State’s resurgence. A member of the 2015-16 WCHA All-Rookie Team, she has accumulated 61 points (15 goals and 46 assists) in 125 collegiate games. Last season, Boyle scored the game-winning goal at Boston College in the NCAA quarterfinals, sending OSU to the 2018 Frozen Four in its first-ever tournament appearance. She enters the second half of the 2018-19 season with a plus-7 rating for the nationally eighth-ranked Buckeyes. Clark, a redshirt-senior from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, helped Canada earn silver at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. A two-time All-WCHA selection, Clark has 13 points (six goals and seven assists) in 13 games this season and, after returning from injury, enters the second half on a three- game point streak for the top-ranked Badgers. The two-way center has accumulated 131 career points in 126 collegiate games, scoring 62 goals with 69 assists for UW. Schammel, a Red Wing, Minn. native, has developed into the leading scorer for the second-ranked Gophers. A redshirt-senior who spent her freshman year at Minnesota State University, Schammel has six goals and 19 assists this season, entering the second half tied for second in the WCHA with 25 points. After a career-best 32 point campaign at Minnesota in 2017-18, Schammel is closing in on the century mark with 91 collegiate points (40 goals and 51 assists in 133 games). The two-day 2018 NWHL Draft saw six WCHA student-athletes drafted by four teams. In addition to Boyle, the Minnesota Whitecaps also selected the Gophers’ Kelly Pannek (first round, fourth overall pick) and the University of Wisconsin’s Sophia Shaver (second round, ninth overall). Alex Woken and Patti Marshall of the University of Minnesota, Presley Norby and Maddie Rowe of the University of Wisconsin and Haley Mack of Bemidji State University were selected by the Minnesota Whitecaps in this year’s draft. The first and second rounds aired on April 28 while the final three rounds were concluded on April 29. Woken earned the first nod of the former WCHA skaters. The Fargo, N.D., native heard her name called in the first round as the Minnesota Whitecaps claimed the 2019-20 WCHA Student-Athlete of the Year with the fifth-overall pick. Marshall followed her former teammate when the Whitecaps selected her in the second round with the 11th-overall pick. Norby joins Woken and Marshall on the Whitecaps roster after Minnesota selected the Wisconsin forward in the third round with the 17th-overall pick. Bemidji State became the third university to see one of their players selected in this year’s draft as Mack went to the Whitecaps with 23rd-overall pick. Rowe rounded out the handful of Whitecaps draftees as the 2019 Isobel Cup Champions chose the former Badgers defender in the fifth round with the 28th -overall pick.

Davis is first Terrier to be the top choice in the NWHL Draft. Overall, six Hockey East players were chosen in opening two rounds of the draft, representing five different member institutions. A full list of those players can be found below. With Davis’s selection, Boston University becomes the only school to have the first overall pick in the entry drafts of the NWHL, CWHL, (2016 - Kayla Tutino, Boston Blades), and the NHL (2000 - Rick DiPietro, New York Islanders.) Davis is the third player from Hockey East to be selected first overall in the NWHL Draft, following a pair of Boston College Eagles in Alex Carpenter in 2015 and Katie Burt in 2017. In total, 35 Hockey East alumnae have been chosen in the NWHL Draft, including a record 11 in 2017. The final three rounds of the 2020 NWHL Draft will be announced live on Twitter at @NWHL beginning at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night. The six NWHL teams competing next season will include Boston Pride, Buffalo Beauts, Connecticut Whale, Metropolitan Riveters, Minnesota Whitecaps, and the new expansion team in Toronto, which was intro- duced on April 22.

University of Wisconsin co-captain Annie Pankowski was tabbed by the Metropolitan Riveters with the draft’s first selection, University of Minnesota captain and Plymouth, Minn. native Kelly Pannek went to her home state Minnesota Whitecaps with the fourth overall pick, and UW’s Sophia Shaver – the Badgers’ other co-captain who hails from Wayzata, Minn. – was also chosen by the Whitecaps in the second round (ninth overall). “We are thrilled for Annie, Kelly and Sophia to have an opportunity to continue their hockey careers beyond college” said WCHA Vice President and Women’s League Commissioner Katie Million. “We have been fortunate to watch these three incredible talents in the WCHA over the last few years and know they will have an immensely positive postgraduate impact in the NWHL and beyond, both on and off the ice.” Pankowski, a redshirt-senior from Laguna Hills, Calif., leads the WCHA with 14 goals this season and enters the holiday break on a seven-game goal streak, the third-longest in UW history. A two-time Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award Top-10 Finalist, a two-time All-American and three-time All-WCHA selection (along with the 2015 Rookie of the Year), Pankowski ranks in the top-10 in Badgers history in goals, assists, points, plus/minus and shots on goal, and is tied for the school record with eight career shorthanded goals.

    NEWS RELEASE WOMEN’S HOCKEY GREATS TRICIA (DUNN) LUOMA AND WINNY (BRODT) BROWN NAMED COACHES FOR NWHL ALL-STAR WEEKEND IN MINNESOTA January 18, 2018, Brooklyn, NY – The National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL) is pleased to announce the head coaches for All-Star Weekend on Feb. 10-11 in Minnesota: three-time Olympian Tricia (Dunn) Luoma, who won gold with Team USA in Nagano in 1998; and Winny (Brodt) Brown, the first-ever winner of the Ms. Hockey Award for high school hockey in Minnesota and a member of the U.S. National Team program for a decade. “We are honored to have a pair of women’s hockey greats with deep connections to Minnesota join us for our All-Star Weekend in Saint Paul,” said NWHL Deputy Commissioner Hayley Moore. “We felt strongly about having a Minnesota presence with our teams for these events, and we couldn’t be more pleased that Tricia and Winny will serve as coaches.” In partnership with the NHL’s Minnesota Wild, 2018 NWHL All-Star Weekend will take place Feb. 10- 11 at TRIA Rink, the Wild’s state-of-the-art Practice Facility in downtown Saint Paul. The NWHL Skills Challenge will take place on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 6:45 p.m. CT. The 2018 NWHL All-Star Game is on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 11:30 a.m. CT. Tickets are available now at NWHL.zone/tickets. Haughtb ab University of Memphis, Memphis, United States Corresponding email: [email protected] Abstract Four men’s sports largely dominate the U.S. sports industry. The National Football League (NFL), the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Major League Baseball (MLB) and the National Hockey League (NHL) combined brought in about $31 billion in revenue in 2016, placing them all in the top 5 leagues with the most revenue worldwide (Kutz, 2017). But, other leagues now have a chance of finding their own audiences through online media. Indeed, social networks allow leagues and teams to communicate directly with their target audience without the need for traditional media. As such, social media plays an increasingly important role as sports marketers use them for various purposes, including promotions (Hambrick and Mahoney, 2011), public relations (Waters et al., 2011) and endorsements (Brisonet al., 2013). The possibility of building an online community has become a key strategy for sports brands and organizations to develop greater loyalty. Using a grounded theory approach, the proposed study employs a digital participant observation, following the netnography (Kozinets, 2002; Muniz and Schau, 2007) process, of how the National Women’s Hockey League’s four teams used Twitter during their first and second seasons. Modeled on the ethnographic method, a netnography requires the researcher to study an online community over an extended period of time, identifying the field and taking notes to then analyze the data. This study seeks to answer how new (minor) sports organizations use social media to build brand communities and what types of messages build fan engagement.

Defending NCAA champion Wisconsin, Minnesota, and WCHA Final Faceoff champion Ohio State joined University of Minnesota Duluth Cornell, Clarkson, Northeastern, Mercyhurst and Princeton in the postseason field. The tournament was cancelled on Minnesota State University March 12 along with the NCAA's winter and spring championships due to the COVID-19 breakout.
