W. S. KINGREY Grand Master 1944 J W. S. KINGREY Grand Master 1944 J. B. You'ngblood, G. S.; John H. B \.._ Thomas, G. S.; J. S. Kingrey, G.' J- Eilers, G. S.; Dr. D. W. Landess, G. O.; Howard M. Sigler, G. S. Biographical Sketch of WILLIAM SAMPSON KINGREY Grand Master, 1944 By EDWIN F. GAYLE Past Grand Master William Sampson Kingrey, Grand Master of Free and Accepted Masons of Louisiana, was born at Pearl, in Old Imperial Calcasieu, now Allen Parish, Louisiana, on September 21, 1886. He is the son of Sampson R. Kingrey and Jane Airhart Kingrey, both of whom were natives of Old Imperial Calcasieu Parish, Brother Kingrey being the fifth of nine children. Brother Kingrey received his education in the public schools of Louisiana and started out in life for himself at the early age of 15 years. On February 3, 1906, he was married to his present wife, Lottie Brice Kingrey, of which marriage there were born three children, one of whom, J. S. Kingrey, had the honor of being appointed Grand Pursuivant of the Grand Lodge of Louisiana by his father. Brother Kingrey has been active in the lumber industry and in the development of the farming and agricultural resources of the State. In 1911 he operated a piling, tie and saw mill businsss until 1917, when he was employed by Peavy-Byrnes Lumber Company as Woods Superintendent, which position he held until 1919, when he moved to Kinder, Louisiana, with his family, since which time he has devoted his attention to cattle raising and rice farming, which he has pursued on a large scale. Brother Kingrey has adopted all the most modern methods of agriculture and cattle raising and has maintained a deep interest in the development of agriculture in his district and in the improvement of cattle breeding. In his herds the Brahma cattle predominate. Brother Kingrey has, in addition to his activity in agriculture and cattle raising, participated in all movements for civic improvement and for the betterment of education in his home Parish of Allen. He is a member of the Congregational Church and a member of the Rotary Club, and since the beginning of the war, has been a member of the Selective Service Board and Chairman of the Parish 0. P. A. Brother Kingrey has taken a deep interest in the social and political welfare of his community; has served on the Parish Demo- cratic Executive Committee and is now a member of the State Central Committee. He served as Mayor of the Town of Kinder for four years and served a four year term as a member of the Police Jury in Allen Parish. Brother Kingrey has taken an active interest in Masonry since his initiation as a member of Reeves Lodge No. 343 in 1912. He subsequently affiliated with Kinder Lodge No. 291 in 1927 and has served three times as Master of that Lodge. He is a member of Kinder Chapter No. 65, Royal Arch Masons, and is Past High Priest of that Chapter, and has been annointed in the Order of High Priests of the Grand Chapter of Louisiana. He is a member of Oakdale Council No. 25, Royal & Select Masters, a member of Lake Charles Consistory, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, and is a Noble of El Karubah Temple, Order of the Mystic Shrine. He was elected Grand Junior Warden of the Grand Lodge of Louisiana in 1941, Grand Senior Warden in 1942, Deputy Grand Master in 1943, and Grand Master in 1944. On February 16, 1944, at the Annual Com- munication of the Grand Lodge of Louisiana, he was installed as Grand Master in due and ancient form by Past Grand Master Dee A. Strickland, assisted by Past Grand Master J. Luther Jordan acting as Grand Marshal. For the past three years Brother Kingrey has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Masonic Home for Children and a member of the Board of Grand Lodge Hall Directors, where his sound common sense and good business judgment have added much to the management of the Home and of the Grand Lodge Temple Building. Brother Kingrey is unassuming and modest in his business and fraternal relations and tastes. He seems reluctant to push him- self forward and appears to be content to perform with earnestness and zeal the duties he is called on to perform as they arise and as occasion demands. He is unselfish in his devotion to the well-being of his community and state and in the service of his fellowman as well as of the brethren of the fraternity. PROCEEDINGS OF THE M. W. EDITION #7B (MAY 2021) Cover design by Bob McGrath 0 CAJUN RECORDS 1946-1989 – A DISCOGRAPHY © Nick Leigh 2020 INTRODUCTION TO THE REVISED EDITIONS I began collecting blues records in 1959 but it was another 7 years before I heard Cleveland Crochet & the Sugar Bees on the Storyville anthology “Louisiana Blues”. My appetite whetted, I wanted more. Buying the Iry Le Jeune LPs on Goldband a few months later (not one but two volumes – and purchased as imports on a student’s allowance!) fuelled an appreciation of Cajun music that has remained undiminished. In the mid 1960s, however, there was little information available about the great music I was listening to, other than the catalogues I obtained from Goldband and Swallow, and the early articles by Mike Leadbitter and John Broven in “Blues Unlimited” and “Jazz Journal”. Thanks to people like Mike, John, Neil Slaven, Rob Ford and Les Fancourt there is now a lot of information available to provide the background to blues and rhythm & blues recordings. However much of the information about the post World War 2 music of South Louisiana in general and the French (Cajun) recordings in particular, remains elusive. So far as I know no single ‘discography’ of post-war Cajun record releases has been published and I thought I would try to correct this oversight. This is notwithstanding the increasing amount of well researched material about the music in general and individual artists. Therefore I take only limited credit for the information included herein about the recordings. My aim has been to bring that material together in a single document.

MEMBERSHIP: Don Everly (b. Brownie, Ky, Feb. 1, 1937); Phil Everly (b. Brownie, Ky, Jan. 19, 1939, although some say Chicago). Don and Phil Everly were taught the guitar at an early age. Their parents, Ike and Margaret, were touring musicians and began hosting a weekly radio show on KMA in Shenandoah, la., in 1945. The brothers began appearing on The Everly Family Show when Don was eight and Phil six. During summers they toured the country circuit with their parents. In 1954, with the help of family friend Chet Atkins, Don was signed to a songwriting contract with Acuff-Rose Publishing, providing Kitty Wells with the major country hit ’Thou Shalt Not Steal,” A year later the brothers moved to Nashville, recording briefly for Columbia Records in late 1955. Early the following year, Wesley Rose became their manager, introducing them to the songwriting team of Felice and Boudleaux Bryant in 1957. Signed to Cadence Records, the Everly Brothers scored their first hit in 1957 with “Bye Bye Love” written by the Bryants. The song, like many that followed, became a three-way hit, making the pop, R&B and country- western charts. “Wake Up Little Susie,” written by the Bryants, topped all three charts, as did Boudleaux’s “All I Have to Do Is Dream/7 The Bryants’ “Problems” was both a pop smash and major country hit, and Boudleaux’s “Bird Dog” was a top pop/country/R&B hit.

  • ASCAP/BMI Comment
Stuart Rosen Senior Vice President General Counsel November 20, 2015 Chief, Litigation III Section Antitrust Division U.S. Department of Justice 450 5th Street NW, Suite 4000 Washington, DC 20001 Re: Justice Department Review of the BMI and ASCAP Consent Decrees To the Chief of the Litigation III Section: BMI recently alerted its community of affiliated songwriters, composers and publishers to the profound impact 100% licensing would have on their careers, both creatively and financially, if it were to be mandated by the U.S. Department of Justice. In a call to action, BMI provided a letter, one for songwriters and one for publishers, to which their signatures could be added. The response was overwhelming. BMI received nearly 13,000 signatures from writers, composers and publishers of all genres of music, at all levels in their careers. Some of the industry's most well- known songwriters added their names, including Stephen Stills, Cynthia Weil, Steve Cropper, Ester Dean, Dean Pitchford, Congressman John Hall, Trini Lopez, John Cafferty, Gunnar Nelson, Lori McKenna, Shannon Rubicam and Don Brewer, among many others. Enclosed you will find the letters, with signatures attached. On behalf of BMI, I strongly urge you to consider the voices of thousands of songwriters and copyright owners reflected here before making a decision that will adversely affect both the creators, and the ongoing creation of, one ofAmerica's most important cultural and economic resources. Vert truly yours, Stuart Rosen 7 World Trade Center, 250 Greenwich Street, New York, NY 10007-0030 (212) 220-3153 Fax: (212) 220-4482 E-Mail: [email protected] ® A Registered Trademark of Broadcast Music, Inc.
