HA(M)ARETZ AUGUST 2016 Israel and the Olympics Four years after the creation of the state, Israel competed in their first ever Olympics. They struggled in the Olympics, never winning a medal until 40 years after their first entry. Not only did they face challenges in competitions, they also faced many other threats

In 1972, 11 members of the Israeli Olympic Team were shot and killed by the Palestinian terror organization, Black September, in what is now known as the Munich Massacre. These actions rocked both Israel and the world. This event halted the Olympics that year as the world gathered to mourn for those lost. In 1980, Israel protested the Olympics with 63 other countries, including the United States. (This protest was to prevent the Soviet Union from invading Afghanistan.)

Israel’s first medaled success came in 1992 when Yael Arad won silver in women’s Half Middleweight , and Oren Smadja won bronze in men’s Lightweight Judo. In 2004, won gold in men’s sailboarding, and Hatikvah, Israel’s national anthem, was heard for the first time on an international stage. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, Israel had a total of 46 competitors in 14 events, and they won 2 bronze medals in Judo. Congratulations, Israel! HA(M)ARETZ AUGUST 2016

Featured City: Eilat

Eilat is the most southern city in Israel in the Negev Desert. It borders both Egypt and Jordan, countries that have both made peace with Israel. (Fun Fact: the peace treaty with Egypt was signed right here in the Mid-Atlantic Region at Camp David!) Eilat has its own defense force called the Lotar, comprised only of army reserves that reside in Eilat. It is highly specialized and is only one of three units in Israel with the authority to free hostages. It is also one of the hottest places in Israel, with temperatures reaching an average high of 104°F this time of year. The warm weather makes it a beach hotspot, and it has a booming tourism industry. The beaches also feature beautiful coral reefs that can be seen while scuba diving. The next time you want to hit the waves, consider Eilat as your next vacation destination.

HA(M)ARETZ AUGUST 2016 Baseball in Israel One of the rising sports is in Israel is baseball. In 2006, their first national team was created to participate in The World Baseball classic and several European tournaments. Then, in 2007, Israel took a big step ליגת) forward: they created the Israel Baseball League .or IBL, for short (הישראלית הבייסבול

In 2006 Israel created a national team which represents them globally. The national team has a junior team for individuals between the ages of 10-18, and an adult team, which participates in a variety of tournaments. (However, both teams have had very little success in European tournaments.) The adult team is still attempting to qualify for the world baseball classic.

The Israel Baseball League is a bit different. Teams in this league face off against other teams from Israel. It is structured into six teams, each team from a different part of the nation. The actual play is very similar that of the US, with one big difference: In the US games last nine innings, but in Israel, the games only last seven. What I found particularly interesting was that in the IBL doesn’t just draft players from Israel. Instead, there are 120 players from nine different countries. (If you are interested in further reading about the diversity of the Israel Baseball League, I would recommend reading Pitching Into the Promised Land by Aaron Priddle.)

In 2017, Israel will attempt to qualify for the world baseball classic. You can also learn more about the IBL follow their season here. Go Israel!
