Tails also appears in his own spin-off series, comics, cartoons and movies. He is the second character to constantly appear on Sonic's side in the series. The name Miles Proveer is a pun on miles per hour, a reference to the famous speed of Sonic Hedgehog. He's a two- tailed fox, hence the nickname. Mechanical genius and experienced pilot, he can fly by rotating his tails like a helicopter rotor, and he can be seen flying in several games and TV shows created by Sega. It debuted with the 8-bit version of in October 1992. In the mid-1990s, he was featured as the main character in a number of spin-off games: Tails and Music Maker for Sega Pico, and Tails Of Adventures and Tails' Skypatrol for the Gear game. Tails was rated the third most popular character in the franchise, after Sonic and Shadow, in an official poll from Sega in 2009. The concept and creation of Yasushi Yamaguchi, originally the chief artist and zone designer of Sega, designed Tails for an internal competition for a fast hedgehog assistant. The character was based on kitsun, a creature from Japanese folklore that could eventually grow into several tails. The character also had to hold a deep admiration for Sonic. While Yamaguchi won, Sega from Japan wanted to name the character Miles Prower (the surname is a play in an hour), while the American subsidiary of Sega of America preferred the nickname Tails, respectively. Sega America has developed a compelling backstory for the character to convince the Japanese parent company and Sonic Team to call him Tails. Yamaguchi ends up with a compromise, using Miles Provere as the real name of the character; Tails will be his nickname, giving the character the full name of Miles Check it out. He made his debut as Sonic's partner in the second game of the franchise and has remained an important player ever since. However, the character's uniqueness wasn't established until , when players were able to control its flight (although AI will make tails fly when it will get behind the screen). The tails have been redesigned (along with all the other Sonic characters) by Yuji Uekawa for Sonic Adventure. His fur changed color to a more yellow hue, unlike orange in his early performances, and he received blue irises. In the American comic Sonic, along with the adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog, he was originally dark brown, but comic book artists and cartoon artists eventually decided to change this to match his appearance in the game. Features The Character tails are portrayed as a very sweet-natured 7 and a modest fox, which, before he met Sonic, was often selected on because of his twin tails. Sonic, however, saw the special talents of Tails and greeted him, causing the fox to have some admiration for the blue hero. As a longtime friend, he admires Sonic and dreams of being just like him. Despite the fact that he lacks courage, he wants to prove that he can count on, and earlier he fought with Dr. Eggman and his robots without the help of Sonic. He loves mint candy, fiddling with cars and flying furs. Despite overcoming most of their fears and becoming very brave, Tails remain keranophobic. Tails have been described as a mechanical prodigy who competes with Dr. Eggman but has not yet fully realized his potential. Combined with his airplane pilot skills, he uses a biplane nicknamed Tornado to help Sonic in their adventures. Besides rotating two tails like a helicopter rotor, it has a unique ability to push itself through the air to catch up with Sonic; however, it tires it quickly, hence its use of aircraft. Unlike Sonic, tails have the ability to swim. Like Sonic, it can turn into Super Tails, but it requires Super Emeralds to be transformed. Also, when in this form, swarm flickies circle tails, it is often referred to by fans as Flicky Army. This was seen first as what seemed to be a one-time appearance in Sonic 3 and Kncles, and then again in , where along with team members Sonic Sonic and Kncles, will transform into their super forms. However, Tails is again able to use its super form in the 2017 video game . In video games, Tails debuted in Sonic 2 for Sega Master System before becoming playable in their version of Genesis, playing the role of Sonic's assistant. He was a playable character of the second controller and could be selected as a player for the main game. (1993), on Game Gear /Master System Second game game the player could control the tails and for the first time the player could control his flight. Tails also made a minor cameo in the Sonic CD for Sega CD, appearing in debugging mode to unlock the screen. Tails makes an appearance along with Sonic in a little-known , SegaSonic Popcorn Shop, a Japanese arcade game that also distributes popcorn. Tails made his third major appearance in the 1994 game, Sonic 3 (I'm Kn eyes), with the ability to pick up Sonic and use his tails to fly him to other areas, rotating its tails like a helicopter. He also got the ability to swim underwater, something Sonic was never able to do. Tails also starred in games without Sonic, such as Tails' Skypatrol, which is a by-spin-up score attack, as the game for Game Gear is released exclusively in Japan. This was followed by Tails Adventures later that year, which is a Metroid-esque platformer with RPG elements. Tails are also the star of Tails and Music Maker for Sega Pico. The tails were supposed to appear in Knuckles' Chaotix 32X game, but were canceled during development. The remaining data about it is still in the game, and can be reproduced as using a cheat code. In later games, Tails had roles requiring unique game modes, including Sonic Adventure, where he appears as one of six playable characters. Its gameplay is based on the standard platformer stages, but the goal of each stage is to get to the Emerald of Chaos before Sonic, or to rocket dud in the final race against Eggman. In , he appears in third-person shooting segments while sitting in his Cyclone fur. In Sonic Adventure, he was given the theme song Believe In Myself, from which another version appeared in Sonic Adventure 2. Tails also appeared either as a playable character or in a supporting role in many of Sonic's later titles and still often resumes its role of flying other characters around, such as in Sonic Heroes, where Tails appears on Team Sonic as their flight-type character, being able to carry both Sonic and Knakhidles Echidna. He also appears as an Amigo character in the 2006 game Sonic the Hedgehog. The tails are seen against the backdrop of the along with Silver and Kntles in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and appears as a trophy, he makes an appearance in the game's two sequels as well. He is the third character the player opens in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, where he acts as a team medic. Tails appear in , where he helps Sonic rebuild a ruined planet, mainly flying Sonic from continent to continent in the game. Tails play a supporting role in Sonic and the Black Knight, portrayed as a local blacksmith who helps players create items that Sonic collects. He appears as a playable character in all Mario and Sonic titles, as well as in Sega Superstars Tennis, Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing, and transformed. He also appears in as an unplayable character. Tails celebrates Sonic's birthday with his friends, mentioning the party at , but when the Time Eater appears, he warps them through various time holes, sending tails to Green Hill. After Sonic releases it, the Tails meet with their classic colleague (Classic Tails) and concludes that they have traveled through time and space. They accompany both Sonics throughout the game, later discovering that Eggman and Robotnik control the Time Eater. Both classic and modern tails, along with all Sonic's friends, help motivate 2 Sonics to defeat the Time Eater. The function for playing as tails was added in the 2011 extended Sonic CD port. He later appeared as a co-operative character in the second episode of Sonic 4. Tails was added as a playable character in the expanded Sonic the Hedgehog port, released in 2013 for mobile devices. The port also has the ability to play in Sonic mode and tails as well. Sonic and Tails eventually encounter a group of villains allied with Dr. Eggman, called The Death Six, when they were shot down during a chase for him in Tornado in . They run into Eggman and notice that he wields a cacophonous conch to control the Death Six. Despite the warnings of the Tails, Sonic knocks the end, forcing the Death Six to betray him. Eggman reluctantly teams up with Sonic and Tails to stop them. This causes numerous conflicts between Tails and Eggman and increases tensions with his friendship with Sonic since Sonic believes Eggman is their only hope of defeating the Death Six. Eventually, tails fall into a trap designed for Sonic, and the Death Six plans to use it to its advantage, turning Tails into a robot. However, Tails manages to reprogram a computer that will control his mind. It would seem that the robotic Tails confront Sonia in the final stage of the game, but, keeping his free will, he will catch by surprise the Death Six and attack them. Later, after Sonic defeated Eggman at the climax of the game, Sonic apologized to the Tails for doubting him. He is a playable character in Sonic Mania (plus), playing like his old incarnations... with Sonic, Kntles, Mighty and Ray. Tails appears as a playable character in Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, Shattered Crystal and Fire and Ice. Tails also shown in the Sonic the Hedgehog Level Pack of . It can also play if a player uses a Tornado like Sonic to fly around. In a story mode for a Sonic level called Sonic Dimensions, Tails helps Sonic with the help of Tornado and his technological knowledge. In the world of hubs, Tails has a side search to help him disable all of Eggman's robotics. Tails is a supportive non-gameable character in , finding Classic Sonic and combining with resistance against Eggman/Modern Robotnik. It also appears as a downloadable Mii Fighter costume in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii You and Ultimate, and also appears as Spirit in the latter. In other media Tails has appeared in 5 sound television shows: The Adventures of Sonic hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Sonic BoomSonic Underground He has also appeared in several Sonic comic book series and feature film. The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog He is only 4 and a half years in the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog while in games, he is 8. As is the case with the canon of the game, his real name is Miles Prover, although his fur is brown. Before the Tails met Sonic, he was apparently an orphan who thought he was a bird because of his ability to fly; it was him kicked out of the nest, which presented the two and led to Miles getting his nickname Tails. The role of Sonic The Hedgehog's Tail in the Saturday morning cartoon Sonic the Hedgehog was in his supporting role, rather low-key compared to the games and adventures of the cartoon series Sonic the Hedgehog. Although clever he was too inexperienced in battle to be a freedom fighter. Tails protege Princess Sally, and was in training to become a freedom fighter in season 1. He became a member of the Freedom Fighters at the end of season 2, after finally proving what he is capable of. Sonic Hedgehog OVA (1996) In a two-part episode of Sonic Hedgehog OVA, Sonic and Tails were sometimes at odds with each other, but still best friends. They reluctantly agreed to help Dr. Robotnik outsmart the Metal Robot, who drove Robotnik out of the city of Robotropolis, and defuse the bomb. Sonic X Throughout much of the Sonic X animated series, Tails mirrors his role in the game in various stories and game adaptations, although he often plays a smaller role in the series due to the presence of Chris Thorndick. Later in the series, Tails develops strong, and reciprocal, romantic feelings for a young extraterrestrial girl, Cosmo, with a constant arch regarding their secret shared interest in each other in the spotlight of several episodes, and the current focus background of season 3. Tails are eventually recognized by Cosmo shortly before he is forced to sacrifice his life to save the galaxy. Sonic the Hedgehog (comic) In the Archie Comics-produced comic book series, Sonic the Hedgehog, Tails is the son of Rosemary and Amadeus Prover; Sonic was present at the time of Tail's birth, and they immediately became close. After being separated from them by Dr. Robotnik, he grew up in the village of Nothol with Sonic the Hedgehog and other freedom fighters. He joins freedom fighters, although he is unable to work on some of the most dangerous missions; when he's working in it basically serves as the pilot of the evacuation vehicle group and remains on board during this time. In these comics Tails has a different form known as Turbo Tails. Tails also appears in the British Sonic the Comic, published by Fleetway. Here he first met Sonic when he saved him from drowning. In this series, Tails was older than its other incarnations, and often the butt of many of Sonic's cruel jokes, most commonly referred to as the Pixel Brain. At first, he is portrayed as something rather repulsive, which constantly allows Sonic to insult him, but over time becomes more competent and heroic. Sonic Boom 3D animated television series Sonic Boom was released in 2014, and the series Tails starred. His personality and design remains basically the same as his main colleague. Some notable differences he now wears are glasses and vest, as well as sporting bandages on his shoes. Sonic The Hedgehog (2020 film) Tails made its theatrical debut appearance in the 2020 Sonic Hedgehog film during a mid-credit sequence, emerging from the ring portal to Earth in search of Sonic. He was voiced again by O'Shaughnessey, the early drafts for the film included Tails in a wider role, with some drafts featuring him being Sonic's best friend in his world, while in another project he was one of the film's main characters. However, when the decision was made at the center of the film's storyline on Sonic to be alone on Earth, the filmmakers decided to use Tails as a tease for the sequel througth cameo in the film in the middle of the stage credits, the role of co-writer Pat Casey compared to the role of Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Other appearances Tails makes guest appearance in OK K.O.! Let's be the heroes of the episode Let's meet Sonic. The reception and legacy of The Tailings Reception was widely positive. He was awarded Best New Character at the 1992 Electronic Gaming Monthly Video Game Awards, stating not only is he as cute as Sonic, but he actually serves the main purpose of the game. IGN editor Lucas M. Thompson listed Tails as one of the Sonic the Hedgehog characters to be in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, citing his importance in the series and its ability. IGN editor Levi Buchanan said fans' reaction to tails' introduction was supportive, leading to further introductions such as Knuckles. Unlike most Sonic characters, Tails has received consistently positive feedback from Sonic fans over the years. Tails is remembered for symbolizing sidekicks and two gameplay players in the 1990s, and both helping Sonic 2 become the second best-selling game for Genesis, allowing the second player to join the game. It was included in many Top Sidekicks lists. Maximum PC listed him as the third largest buddy, and Machinima.com his fifth place, and Maxim Maxim him as the eighth most underrated sidekick. Ranking him as the sixth greatest, Mashable said that tailings pretty much embodies the definition of sidekick. Sonic and Tails were jointly recognized as the ninth greatest gaming duo IGN. Morgan Sleeper of NintendoLife called Tails one of Sega's favorite mascots. However, fellow IGN writer Levi Buchanan said that when Sega noticed the popularity of Tails and later, Knuckles, they just kept pumping new faces and names into the game, taking attention away from their hero. GameDaily listed the irritating buddy on their list of the 25 best video game archetypes, citing Tails as an example of this. GamesRadar listed him as number one on their list of cute characters they wanted to beat, saying that while he was starting out as interesting, he led to the creation of other characters who smothered life from the franchise. They brought him time to know-it-all in later games why they hate him so much. The official Nintendo magazine named him the second best character in Sonic.
