Start your review of Captain America, Vol. Dec 03, Terence rated it really liked it Shelves: marvel-unlimited Cap is once more reminded of the tragedy of war. The world has monsters and killers, but is the US the cause of them? A few of the quotes in this volume are the type that keep me up at night when I think about them too long. Or does the light we see Captain America: Capta Vol. 1 shadows we don't -- Where monsters Like a machine gun. A madman lights the spark -- And the people pay the price. He's Captain America: Capta Vol. 1 heart, the fight, the idealism, and the aspiration of America and Americans. It's funny when I was younger I didn't appreciate Captain America, but ever since his films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe I have a totally different perspective on him. Cap is simply an incredible character and this volume is a good reminder as well as a palate cleanser from the horrible Hydra Cap crap Marvel recently put out. The New Deal is a strong beginning to a powerfully thoughtful Captain America series. View 2 comments. For me, this was the book that brought artist John Cassaday that Astonishing X-Men gig with Joss Whedon that turned him into a superstar. If I'm not mistaken, this is the first appearance of John Cassday's subtle redesign of Cap's chain-mail tunic. The fabric or material of suit is less cloth and more of a composite material arranged in a chain-mail design. That is significant in itself since the look became the main Captain America visual for more than a decade. Cassaday carried this story with his shoulders and showed that his art could carry a book or at least a story. It was good that he did because the story failed me as a reader. The story isn't bad but it failed me because I'm not an American. The patriotic tone of the book made me as a reader excluded. Still, I can get behind the Captain America: Capta Vol. 1 and that's why it gets four stars. May 05, James DeSantis rated it really liked it. This was pretty damn good. Trying to piece against the world again. The first issue of him digging through the pile of the buildings where he's trying to save a few people is just perfect captain America. Then have Captain America stop a hate crime from happening in true Captain America fashion. Then we get into the real meat of the story of terrorism and it's probably one of Captain America: Capta Vol. 1 most patriotic yet capturing who Cap is. Surprisingly the story does j This was pretty damn good. Surprisingly the story does justice to current events at the time. I think a lot of it still rings true, on how hate breeds fear, which cause people to do horrible things. So wonderful. The art is pretty solid too as is the pacing. The ending ends as I expected so that was a bit let down since I thought they could have pushed it a little more. Saying Captain America: Capta Vol. 1, this was a really entertaining captain america story. Captain America: Capta Vol. 1 18, Mizuki rated it really liked it Shelves: comicpretty-good. It's a nice, fast paced story, the artwork is nice too. This post short story has a sensible political message, although I honestly don't know how realistic this message is, or how useful it's when applying to the real world. Jan 31, Anthony rated it really liked it. Little torn about how I feel on this one. On the one hand, I do get why Marvel would want a character like Captain America handling 'real-world' events, especially But on the other, I want my super hero comics to be escapism from the real world. But that was the 's. Seeing Captain America fight terrorists doesn't have the same effect as seeing Captain America punching Hitl Little torn about how I feel on this one. Seeing Captain America fight terrorists doesn't have the same effect as seeing Captain America punching Hitler. Like, there's a scene were Captain America is literally falling to his death while he's wrapped Captain America: Capta Vol. 1 the American flag which is also on fire. I mean come on, really? But at least the antagonist wasn't your typical run-of-the-mill middle eastern looking stereotype. Instead, we're never quite sure where he's from I think it's heavily implied that he's Russian? And his look is also that of a burnt man, so the scaring has made him completely white. I just think it's interesting in a positive way that in a book which is basically Captain America against terrorists, the lead terrorist doesn't look like your generic Hollywood stereotype of what a terrorist is. But with all that said, this is a pretty good read. This is mostly down to John Cassaday's art looking amazing and much better than his recent work in Uncanny Avengers. I like how Rieber doesn't overfill the pages with caption boxes and word balloons, so he's not covering up Cassaday's art. Instead the story is almost driven by the art and all the words are secondary. While I don't think it's quite as good, it's covering similar themes and grounds. This was just fine. There are a few marvel comics around this time that have similar art. The storyline was surprisingly progressive for the time. So, it was surprisingly refreshing. An interesting note: if I read this right, this comic actually takes responsibility for the civilians harmed during WWII? I do give credit for taking what was Captain America: Capta Vol. 1 a controversial stance at the time. Captain America: Forever Allies Vol 1 1 | Marvel Database | Fandom Captain America's investigation into the earlier attack on the decommissioned SHIELD base leads him to Machinesmith's old hideout, but he can't find any sign of activity. Even though the Sleeper goes berserk, Cap is able to get one of the facility's stasis field generators onto it to incapacitate it. Meanwhile, Battlestar has been looking into the suspicious circumstances of John Walker's death and found that the gear belonging to the Watchdog assassin wasn't authentic. He lets Val Cooper know, but the CSA soon doesn't need to wonder if Walker's death was faked as their own General Haywerth comes clean about Captain America: Capta Vol. 1 it in a ploy to deal with their agent's tarnished image.

The Green Scare: Radical environmental activism and the invention of “eco-terror- ism” in American superhero comics from 1970 to 1990 by Brendan James Lacy A thesis presented to the University of Waterloo in fulfi llment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Master of Architecture Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2021 © Brendan James Lacy 2021 Author’s Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required fi nal revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. iii Abstract American environmentalism became a recognizable social move- ment in the 1960s. In the following two decades the movement evolved to represent a diverse set of philosophies and developed new protest methods. In the early 1990s law enforcement and govern- ment offi cials in America, with support from extraction industries, created an image of the radical environmental movement as danger- ous “eco-terrorists.” Th e concept was deployed in an eff ort to de-val- ue the environmental movement’s position at a time of heightened environmental consciousness. With the concept in place members of the movement became easier to detain and the public easier to deter through political repression. Th e concept of “eco-terrorism” enters popular media relatively quickly indicated by the proliferation of superhero comics in the ear- ly 1990s that present villainous environmental activists as “eco-ter- rorists.” Th is imagery contrasts comics from 1970 which depicted superheroes as working alongside activists for the betterment of the world.

GEEK MYTHOLOGY: NOSTALGIA IN FOUR COLORS RYAN HAMPTON he cover of Marvel Comics’ The West Coast Avengers #11 depicts Iron Man, an armored and helmeted superhero, locked in heated battle with Shockwave, an Tarmored and helmeted supervillain. Both their arms are raised, the fingers of Iron Man’s right hand intertwined with Shockwave’s left hand in a power struggle to hold the other close. Iron Man’s left hand is clenched into a fist about to hammer Shockwave’s silver face shield, while Shockwave’s right hand is extended in a karate chop formation about to strike Iron Man’s back. In the middle distance, Hawkeye, a nebulous hero clad in a purple costume and armed with bow and arrow, and Mockingbird, an acrobatic ingénue armed with an extendable steel staff, are fending off Razorfist, who has large razors for hands, and Zaran, a self-proclaimed weapons master. In the background, a crowd of frightened onlookers recedes into the distance. As an adolescent, this cover spoke to me in a way that it does not now. I had never purchased a comic book before, but something about the characters and their struggles prompted me to buy it, take it home, and devour its contents. I hold no emotional ties to the comic itself (the cover image and the story inside were long forgotten until rereading the issue very recently), except that it was the entry point for years of comic book collecting that eventually waned and died with the advent of adulthood and the speculator boom and crash of the mid-1990s.

A simple Google search proves that. If a website or publication has made that list, then odds are pretty good that The Infinity Gauntlet isn’t just on it, but at the top. It’s not hard to understand why. For starters, the story is beyond grandiose. It’s not just superheroes confronting a supervillain. There are heroes, sure, and there are definitely villains. But there are also gods, celestials, living archetypes, physical embodiments of forces of nature, and scores of alien races all locked in cosmic combat, with some fights by Chris Brennaman being too much for mere mortals to even comprehend, let alone witness. On top of being grandiose, the story is oddly straightforward. The stakes are clearly defined, the villain easy to root against, and the heroes properly challenged. Sure, it makes for a richer reading experience if you track down and read a few story arcs from the 1970s, but you don’t actually have to do that to enjoy or even understand anything that’s going on. Steeped in continuity, it’s actually perfectly crafted as a standalone. Oh, and that villain we mentioned? He’s actually frighteningly competent and effectual. In the first issue of The Infinity Gauntlet, with a snap of his finger, he accomplishes his macabre goal of killing half of all sentient life in the universe.

Crisis of Infinite Intertexts! Continuity as Adaptation in the Superman Multimedia Franchise Jack Peterson Teiwes ORCID identifier 0000-0001-8956-1602 Doctor of Philosophy November 2015 School of Culture and Communication The University of Melbourne Submitted in total fulfillment of the requirements of the PhD degree Produced on archival quality paper Abstract Since first appearing as a comic book character over three quarters of a century ago, Superman was not only the first superhero, spawning an entire genre of imitators, but also quickly became one of the most widely disseminated multi-media entertainment franchises. This achieved a degree of intergenerational cultural dissemination that far surpasses his comic book fandom. Yet despite an unprecedented degree of adaptation into other media from radio, newspaper strips, film serials, animation, feature films, video games and television, Superman’s ongoing comic books have remained in unbroken publication, developing a long and complex history of narrative renewal and reinvention. This thesis investigates the multifaceted intertextuality between the comic book portrayals of Superman and its many adaptations over the years, including how such retellings in other media have a generally stronger cultural impact, which exerts in turn an adaptive influence upon these continuing comics’ internalised narrative continuity. I shall argue that Superman comics, as a case study for the wider phenomenon in the superhero genre, demonstrate via their frequent revisions and relaunches of continuity, a process of deeply palimpsestuous self-adaptation. The Introduction positions my research methodology in relation to intertextual theory, with an emphasis on providing terminological clarity, while Chapter 1 expands into a literature review on pertinent key scholarship on adaptation studies and the comics studies field specifically.
