CPLC FALL UPDATE – 2012 As Co-Chair of 31 Divison’s CPLC, I would like to welcome everyone to our quarterly year end meeting. Please note an omission to our Summer Update, 2012 Thursday June 19 – Lee Jackson hosted her annual Neighbours’ Night Out. For many years, Lee has hosted this very successful event in her front yard. It was well attended by her neighbours, local politicians, 31 Division along with Toronto Fire Dept. There was plenty of food and camaraderie amongst the adults and children that participated. Lee continues to promote a safe environment for her local community. Meeting and Events Attended on Behalf of CPCL Planning Sessions for “Transforming Ideas To Actions” Forum Sept. 12 - As part of the planning committee, we had our final site plan meeting leading up to the Forum “Transforming Ideas To Actions” that was discussed at our Sept. meeting. Sept. 13 - Took part in the first Forum “Transforming Ideas To Actions” held at 15 San Romanoway’s Community Centre from 10am – 2pm, hosted by 31 Division. This was a very successful day with over 50 community members & police in attendance. 31 Division listened to a large diverse group of community leaders expressing concerns within their community along with suggestions on how to improve safety, build better relationships with 31 Division’s police and how to make their community a more desirable place to live. York University’s “Good Neighbour Guide” Drop Sept. 22 - I participated in a safety event hosted by York University. An evening was planned for a large group of volunteers to distribute various brochures to every home in York University’s area referred to as the Village. Toronto Police provided useful information pertaining to issues such as personal safety, reporting noise issues & vandalism. All doors were knocked on and we were able to personally dialogue with many residents. The strong presence of 31 Division police officers, students, athletes, & staff from York University, Seneca, and 51 Division, took part in the drop. Tour de Black Creek Bike Race Sept. 23 - 31 Division was again the host division for this year’s Tour de Black Creek Bike Race held at Driftwood Community Centre. This event is a partnership with Toronto Police, Toronto Children’s Breakfast Clubs, Humber College, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities and GT Cycle Club. 31 Division had a team of approximately 30 children participating in the race and receiving new bikes. There were other police divisions partaking in this event supporting their own teams. The event was well supported by many, such as local community members cheering on the kids, Toronto Police, Chief Blair, Councillor Anthony Perruzza & staff, representatives from the various partners of the event along with news media. It was a very busy and fun day for all; most of all for the kids who participated and received new bikes. Downsview Services for Seniors Oct. 5 - Downsview Services for Seniors hosted a networking breakfast. It was a great opportunity to hear about the wide range of services available to seniors in our community. Information about our CPLC and how we can assist Downsview Services for Seniors in helping our seniors with all aspects of safety, was provided. As a result of this breakfast, Downsview Services for Seniors has already been in touch with me to help facilitate 31 Division’s involvement in an upcoming training session with their staff. In the new year CPLC will also be working with this group, facilitating a safety information session at one of their senior get-togethers. We look forward to this new partnership. 52 Division Fundraiser Oct. 10 - I attended a fundraiser for 52 Division. It was very informative to see how other divisions plan and execute fundraisers for their Bursary Awards. 2 Town Hall Meeting - 52 Division Oct. 11 - Chief Blair held a Town Hall Meeting at Marc Garneau C.I., hosted by the Chief’s South and West Asian Consultative Committee, via 52 Division. Chief Blair and the Toronto Police Service spoke on issues of elder abuse, financial crimes, newcomer resources and employment, and volunteer opportunities. There was an interesting talk on Elder abuse (physical, mental and financial) given by Constable Patricia Fleischmann, elder abuse coordinator with Toronto Police Service. Patricia would be a good resource to speak at one of our future meetings. Screening of a film “The Interrupters” Oct. 18 - Humber College, in collaboration with the City of Toronto's Prevention Intervention Toronto - youth gang prevention project, hosted 'The Interrupters: An Alternative Approach to Crime Prevention', a screening of the award-winning documentary, THE INTERRUPTERS, followed by a panel discussion on violence prevention strategies in Canada. Following the film screening, there was a Q&A session with experts in criminology, gang prevention, policing and social services, discussing engagement strategies to connect with the systemically targeted population highlighted in the film, to help curb violence in our communities. This documentary, filmed in Chicago presented a different perspective to guns, gangs, intervention and prevention. I would highly recommend watching this film if possible. It can be found on the internet if you type in your search engine, The Interrupters. Forum (part 2) Planning Session Nov. 2 - Our forum committee met to organize part 2 of our Forum “Transforming Ideas To Actions”. 3 16th Annual Community Police Consultative Conference Nov. 17- Attended the CPC Conference with Superintendent McLeod, held at the York Civic Centre. The theme was “Crime Prevention….it’s everyone’s responsibility” There was a lot of useful information exchanged that can be utilized at public forums, community meetings and everyday policing. CPAT (Crime Prevention Association of Canada) Annual General Meeting Nov. 28 - CPLC Co-Chairs were invited to attend this informative meeting held at the East York Civic Centre. I listened to several interesting speakers that allowed me to walk away with fresh ideas and useful contacts. CPAT hopes to revive Neighbourhood Watch within our communities. CPAT will be hosting meetings in conjunction with CPLCs’ in the new year. We will keep you posted via TPSLinks. “Transforming Ideas to Actions” Forum (Part 2) Nov. 29 - Part 2 of the Forum was once again well attended by community members, agency representatives and 31 Division police officers along with some new faces coming on board. After all the information was gathered and reviewed from the first Forum, an action plan was put in place to form several committees with volunteers from our local community agencies. I will be working with a committee to develop an electronic community message board. Our goal is to have this board display information from various agencies allowing individuals to access names and phone numbers according to the help they are looking for. 31 Division/CPLC will post information regarding events and pertinent phone numbers etc. Superintendent McLeod will be discussing the outcome of our 2nd Forum at our CPLC meeting. If we all continue to work together, our goals will be achievable. 4 UPCOMING EVENTS POSTED ON 31 DIVISION’S FACEBOOK PAGE Hour Dance Attack Ever want to learn how to dance? We have had a number of reported incidents in regards to cell phone Robbery's in the area of Weston Road and Sheppard Ave in the City of Toronto. The victim was using the cell phone when the suspect approached her from behind. The suspect grabbed the victim's phone. Crime Prevention – To help prevent yourself from being a victim of a Robbery, always be alert to who is nearby and what is happening in the area around you. Be especially cautious when out in public areas. Try not to display large amounts of money. Using cell phones & iPods while in public places can distract you from staying alert and listening to what is happening around you. 5 GARAGE SECURITY Garages are a favorite target for criminals. Be sure windows are curtained or plastic film covered so thieves can't look for items to steal or check to see if your car is there. The door between your house and attached garage should swing inward, have a solid core door and a deadbolt lock. Here are some other tips to help you keep your garage safe. •Keep your garage locked, even when at home •If the overhead garage door is roller and track operated, install a lock in the track to block the roller, and disconnect your automatic garage door opener before you go on vacation •Secure your other garage doors with deadbolts •Install lights near your garage to keep the area lit •Leave your headlights on until you park in the garage •Have a remote control garage door opener installed. This will allow you to stay in your locked car until you're inside your locked garage. Be sure the overhead door closes completely after you drive into or out of your garage •Never leave your automatic garage door opener in a vehicle that is parked outside your home WINTER SURVIVAL KIT FOR CARS Winter is just around the corner....are you prepared? Now is the time to start getting ready.
