CRATYLUS By Plato Translated by Benjamin Jowett The Project Gutenberg EBook of Cratylus, by Plato INTRODUCTION. The Cratylus has always been a source of perplexity to the student of Plato. While in fancy and humour, and perfection of style and metaphysical originality, this dialogue may be ranked with the best of the Platonic writings, there has been an uncertainty about the motive of the piece, which interpreters have hitherto not succeeded in dispelling. We need not suppose that Plato used words in order to conceal his thoughts, or that he would have been unintelligible to an educated contemporary. In the Phaedrus and Euthydemus we also find a difficulty in determining the precise aim of the author. Plato wrote satires in the form of dialogues, and his meaning, like that of other satirical writers, has often slept in the ear of posterity. Two causes may be assigned for this obscurity: 1st, the subtlety and allusiveness of this species of composition; 2nd, the difficulty of reproducing a state of life and literature which has passed away. A satire is unmeaning unless we can place ourselves back among the persons and thoughts of the age in which it was written. Had the treatise of Antisthenes upon words, or the speculations of Cratylus, or some other Heracleitean of the fourth century B.C., on the nature of language been preserved to us; or if we had lived at the time, and been 'rich enough to attend the fifty-drachma course of Prodicus,' we should have understood Plato better, and many points which are now attributed to the extravagance of Socrates' humour would have been found, like the allusions of Aristophanes in the Clouds, to have gone home to the sophists and grammarians of the day. -

This led them to an absorption with the Jewish creation myths in Genesis, which they obsessively reinterpreted to formulate allegorical explanations of how humans ended up trapped in the world of matter. The basic Gnostic story, which varied in details from teacher to teacher, was this: In the beginning there was an unknowable, immaterial, and invisible God, sometimes called the Father of All and sometimes by other names. “He” was neither male nor female, and was composed of an implicitly finite amount of a living nonphysical substance. Surrounding this God was a great empty region called the Pleroma (the fullness). Beyond the Pleroma lay empty space. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas. -

Science Fiction Book Club Interview with Andrew M. Butler and David Hyde July 2018 Andrew M. Butler is a British academic who teaches film, media and cultural studies at Canterbury Christ Church University. His thesis paper for his PhD was titled “Ontology and ethics in the writings of Philip K. Dick.” He has also published “The Pocket essential Philip K. Dick”. He is a former editor of Vector, the Critical Journal of the British Science Fiction Association and was membership secretary of the Science Fiction Foundation. He is a former Arthur C. Clarke Award judge and is now a member of the Serendip Foundation which administers the award. David Hyde, a.k.a. Lord Running Clam, joined the Philip K. Dick Society in 1985 and contributed to its newsletter. When the PKDS was discontinued, he created For Dickheads Only in 1993, a zine that was active until 1997. Since then, his activities include many contributions to and editorial work for the fanzine PKD OTAKU. His book, PINK BEAM: A Philip K. Dick Companion, is a detailed publication history of PKD's novels and short stories. In 2010, David organized the 21st century's first Philip K. Dick Festival in Black Hawk, Colorado. Recently, in partnership with Henri Wintz at Wide Books, he has published two full-color bibliographies of the novels and short stories of Philip K. Dick. In early 2019 Wide Books will publish the French bibliography. On the 35th anniversary of Phil’s passing in 2017 David held a memorial celebration for PKD fans in Ft. Morgan, Colorado, the final resting place of Phil and his twin sister Jane. -

1 Mysticism and Mystical Experiences The first issue is simply to identify what mysti cism is. The term derives from the Latin word “mysticus” and ultimately from the Greek “mustikos.”1 The Greek root muo“ ” means “to close or conceal” and hence “hidden.”2 The word came to mean “silent” or “secret,” i.e., doctrines and rituals that should not be revealed to the uninitiated. The adjec tive “mystical” entered the Christian lexicon in the second century when it was adapted by theolo- gians to refer, not to inexpressible experiences of God, but to the mystery of “the divine” in liturgical matters, such as the invisible God being present in sacraments and to the hidden meaning of scriptural passages, i.e., how Christ was actually being referred to in Old Testament passages ostensibly about other things. Thus, theologians spoke of mystical theology and the mystical meaning of the Bible. But at least after the third-century Egyptian theolo- gian Origen, “mystical” could also refer to a contemplative, direct appre- hension of God. The nouns “mystic” and “mysticism” were only invented in the seven teenth century when spirituality was becoming separated from general theology.3 In the modern era, mystical inter pretations of the Bible dropped away in favor of literal readings. At that time, modernity’s focus on the individual also arose. Religion began to become privatized in terms of the primacy of individuals, their beliefs, and their experiences rather than being seen in terms of rituals and institutions. “Religious experiences” also became a distinct category as scholars beginning in Germany tried, in light of science, to find a distinct experi ential element to religion. -

Philip Kindred Dick was one of the most important writers of the latter half of the 20th century. In fact, if you really want my opinion, he was the most important writer of the second half of the 20th century. It certainly isn’t a majority opinion, but increasingly more and more people are beginning to agree with this assessment. During his lifetime such a notion would have been considered the eccentric opinion of a few literary lunatics, or at the very least, a bunch of nerdy Sci Fi freaks. Yet it seems that genius will eventually have its day, and in the case of Dick, belated recognition has taken the form of a mad scramble to turn his rich oeuvre into a steady stream of Hollywood blockbusters. It began with Ridley Scott’s film Bladerunner (1982), adapted from Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream Electric Sheep? Initially a huge commercial flop in the United States, the film has subsequently became a cult hit everywhere else. Then Paul Verhoeven made Total Recall (1990) from a Dick short story; Christian Duguay made Screamers (1995) from the story ‘Second Variety’ and…well, the list continues, right up to the most recent adaptation, The Adjustment Bureau (Nolfi, 2011). -

The Ocean of Theosophy Is a Classic of Theosophical Literature
PHILOSOPHY/THEOSOPHY T Mr. Judge’s The Ocean of Theosophy is a classic of theosophical literature. Written in 1893 as a text to explain the broad themes treated in H.P. Blavatsky’s HE two-volume magnum opus, The Secret Doctrine, it has long been regarded by students of the Wisdom Religion as one of the most valuable “keys” to understanding the latter work. O Robert Crosbie described the import of this volume in the following CEAN OF THE OCEAN OF manner: “As the Author’s Preface shows, the book was written in such a manner as to be understood by the ordinary reader; the simplicity of the terms used, however, should not mislead the reader into thinking that the work is an elementary one, for behind and within every statement THEOSOPHY there is a depth of meaning that the careless and superficial fail to perceive. It is really a simplified text-book of the fundamental teachings of Theosophy, and is found by students of the “Secret Doctrine” to be a true abridgment of that great work and a wonderful aid in its T comprehension; it was written with that end in view by the only one HEOSOPHY competent to do so and is there fore earnestly recommended to every student of Theosophy.” Students of every variety will gain enormous benefit from the study of both works conjointly. Mr. Judge’s Ocean provides a high-level overview - the schematic, if you will - of the subject matter treated in great detail in the Secret Doctrine, and is so very useful in keeping in mind the scope of that work. -

Dick was a close friend, his untimely death affected me deeply, and aside from a brief obituary I was cozened into writing at the time and an introduction to one volume of his collected short stories, I have been unwilling and perhaps unable to write about Phil since. But this book is intended as a critical overview of the modern literature, Phil Dick is arguably the greatest science fiction writer who ever lived and certainly a central figure in the literary history of the field, so SCIENCE FICTION IN THE REAL WORLD would not only have a gaping void at its heart if a consideration of Dick's work were omitted, it would do a disservice to his literary legacy. However, I will not be so disingenuous as to pretend to objectivity; indeed it is obvious from the two opening paragraphs that I cannot even decide upon a comfortable way of referring to my late friend and literary comrade. I cannot help but commit innumerable sins against conventional critical objectivity in this essay, which perforce must be as much a personal memoir as a piece of literary criticism. Furthermore, I freely admit that what finally moved me to break my grieved silence on the subject of Philip K. Dick was the growing amount of cultish rubbish written about Phil since his death, which, I believe, has done a disservice to the serious critical perception of the true greatness of his ouevre by obscuring its center, which has little to do with relatively minor works like VALIS and THE DIVINE INVASION, let alone the so-called "Exegesis." Gregg Rickman has entitled one book of interpreted interviews with Phil THE FINAL TESTAMENT and it concentrates mainly on VALIS, THE DIVINE INVASION, Phil's experience with the so-called "pink light" and the dybbuk of a 14th Century rabbi who supposedly dictated to him the material of the "Exegesis" upon which these novels were based. -

Kruger Theology Department, Boston College, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467, USA; [email protected] Received: 18 June 2020; Accepted: 24 July 2020; Published: 28 July 2020 Abstract: Taking as its foundation a religious experience of my own, this paper explores the impact of the study of religion on the interpretation and significance of experience. My experience will be analyzed in relation to the work of William James, followed by a movement into neuroscientific research on null experiences, before turning to philosophic and theological treatments of experience in Nishida Kitaro and Meister Eckhart especially. These accounts of religious experience are then explored in terms of the potential connection they suggest with drug use in and out of religious settings. Finally, I will turn to a fundamental questioning of experience as seen in the work of Martin Heidegger and Jean-Luc Marion, all of which sets up a tentative conclusion regarding our approach to religious experience, whether as an object of study or our own. Keywords: religious experience; William James; Jean-Luc Marion; counter-experience; Martin Heidegger; drug use Preface Before we begin, at the risk of giving everything away, please allow me to state plainly and directly what I am doing in this paper. This special issue of Religions asks us to question objectivity as a method in religious studies, but also to question subjectivity, and to do so through a phenomenological approach. This is what I will do, and I will accomplish this within this piece by switching perspectives and writing styles: I will include personal narrative, and describe the development of my thought, even including half-thoughts or false-perspectives which I have discarded along the way, but which lead me to where I am.
