JAPAN by Dong Ryong CHoi (With 1 Table, 4 Text-figures and 7 plates) (Contribution from the Department of Geology and Mineralogy Faculty of Science, Hokl{aido University, No, 1136) Southern Kitakami Mountains have long been considered as one of type areas for the Japanese Permian. Fusulinids are by no means uncommon there, however, they are generally so badly recrystallized and strongly deformed as to prevent detailed palaeontological investigation on them. Furthermore, fusulinids are more or less confined to limes- tone facies, and consequently, considerable portion of the Kitakami Permian is barren in fusulinids, due to its non calcareous facies. The Kattisawa stage of the Kanokura series is, for instance, almost wholly com- posed of greenish grey sandstone in the type area. And no fusulinids have been known to occur in this part of Permian succession in the Kital<ami Mountains, apart from the sporadical occurrence of external moulds of either Monodeencodina or Parofusulina in sandstone. During the course of his fossil collections in the Imosawa area in Iwate Prefec- ture, Dr. K. NAKAMuRA of the Hokkaido University found exceptionally well pre- served fusulinids for the Kitakami Permian in a small limestone lens intercalated in sandstone and shale of the Kattisawa stage. This new finding drew the writer's attention. As a part of his detailed stratigraphical investigation on the Permian of the Southern Kitakami Mountains, the writer made mapping and collection of fusulinids in the tributary of Imosawa, Yahagi-Cho, Rikuzentakada City, Iwate Pre- fecture. Geological structure of the area surveyed is dominated by a syncline running through the center of the area. The axis of syncline is lifted in the center of it, where PseudbLfusulina bearing relatively thick limestone is exposed. This lime- stone is correlatable to the upper part of Sakamotosawa series developed in the ad- jacent Setamai-Yahagi district, from where lh'sellina cf. claudiae, PseudbLfttsztlina krafai, Nagatoella minatoi and others are found. Near the mouth of the tributary of Imosawa, fine conglomerate, corresponding to the base of the Kanokura series, is developed. And in the middle to upper tri- 328 D. R. CHol ,llij]･ Fig. 1 Index map. butary of Imosawa, there develops greenish sandstone of the Kanokura series with the intercalation of thin limestone beds or lenses bearing abundant fusulinids and corals. And plentifu1 brachiopods have been obtained from some horizons in sandstone. Iwaizaki stage, the upper part of the Kanokura series, begins from a thin limstone bed yielding Ydbeina (Lopidolina) multisoptata shiraiwensis, Vbrbeekina verbeeki and others. Above the limestone, Usuginu type conglomerate, bearing peb- bles, is often found within very coarse to granule sandstone. Thus the whole stratigraphical section of the Kattisawa stage bounded from the Sakamotosawa series and Iwaizaki stage of the Kanokura series is exposed in the tributary of Imosawa. Lithologically, the KattisaWa stage is divided into two major parts by the upper surface of slate bed intercalated in the middle part of the stage.. A 155 m carbonate succession of the Picacho Colorado Formation, exposed on the east side of Cerro Picacho Colorado, a few kilometers southeast of Cobachi, consists of pinkish and reddish limestone, cherty limestone with some recrystallization, and bioclastic gray limestone. Crinoids, bryozoa, brachiopods and fo- raminifers are present indicating a marine shallow water shelf depositional environment. Well pre- served fusulinaceans occur near the top of the section, but are scarce, partially silicified, and poorly preserved in the middle part and the base of the section. Skinnerella cobachiensis n. sp., Paraskin- nerella cf. P. durhami, Parafusulina P. cf. P. multisepta and three unnamed species of Parafusulina of early Permian (Leonardian) age are described from this succession. I) Abstract: Some morphologic features, such as cuniculi, „rugosity” of the spirotheca, orimentary foramina and parachoma'ta, the first transverse septula and the uncoiled last volution, were hitherto considered to be characteristic for single genera. Now it is clear thait these characters occur in genera of different phylo- genic origins. Owing to parallel evolution, similar forms were produced. Therefore the view is expressed 'that some fusulinid „genera” represent assemblages of diverse genetic ancestry. Recently many papers have been published on problems concerning the evolution of the Fusulinida. Especially important is the paper written by Rauzer-Chernousova (1963). In the present account, a few points based predominantly on material from Yugoslavia are made. It is known that in the foraminiferal order Fusulinida, some charac­ teristics repeatedly occur in different evolutionary trends. Thus highly elongated cylindrical or fusiform tests are found in tihe genera of various families (for example, Fusiella, Minojapanella, Quasijusulnt^x, Wede- kindellina, Pamjusulina, Polydiexodina, Manodiexodirua, Pseudodoliolina, Sumatrina, etc.) especially as the final forms of single phylogenetical branches. Furthermore, the nautiloid form is repeated mostly in the primitive genera Pseudoendothyra, Staffella, Kahlerina, Brevaxina, Pseu- dostaffella, Eostaffella, the ellipsoidal form in Schubertella, Leella, Zellia. Misellina, Neoschwagerina and <the spherical one in Pseudoendothyra, Pseudostajfella, Sphaerulina, Verbeekina, Schubertella, in different re­ presentatives of Pseudoschwagerininae and rarely in N eoschwagerina. The repeated occurrence of cylindrical and various inflated, fusiform shells is also known.

    Stratigraphy of deformed Permian carbonate reefs in the Saraburi Province, Thailand Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the Uni versity of Adelaide for an Honours Degree in Geology Romana Elysium Carthew Dew November 2014 Romana Dew Stratigraphy of deformed Permian carbonate reefs, Thailand TITLE Stratigraphy of deformed Permian carbonate reefs in the Saraburi Province, Thailand RUNNING TITLE Stratigraphy of deformed Permian carbonate reefs, Thailand ABSTRACT The Indosinian Orogeny brought together a number of continental blocks and volcanic arcs during the Permian and Triassic periods. Prior to the orogeny, carbonate platforms and minor clastic sediments were deposited on the margins of these continental blocks. The Khao Khwang Platform formed along the southern margin of one continental fragment of the Indochina Block and was deformed in the early Triassic creating the Khao Khwang Fold-Thrust Belt. The palaeogeography of the Indochina Block margin prior to this deformation is incompletely known, yet is significant in assisting with structural reconstructions of the area and in assisting with our understanding of the ecology of Permian fusulinid- dominated habitats. The sedimentology and stratigraphy of the Permian platform carbonates and basin complexes require further analysis. Three main carbonate platform dominated facies have been identified previously as the Phu Phe, Khao Khad and Khao Khwang formations. These platform facies are divided by clastic, mixed siliciclastic and carbonate sequences known as the Sap Bon, Pang Asok and Nong Pong formations. Here, I present a stratigraphic model for the carbonate reefs and intervening clastic sedimentary rocks using the exposed well-developed sections in central Thailand. The model integrates fossil identification, biostratigraphic correlation and palaeoenvironmental analysis, in accordance with structural controls and fieldwork in the Saraburi Province, Thailand.

Żwirki i Wigury 93, 02-089 Warszawa, Poland Pszczółkowski. A., 1989. Late Paleozoic fossils from pebbles in the San Cayetano Formation, Siena del Rosario. Cuba. Ann. Soc. Geol. Polon.. 59: 27 40. Abstract: Late Paleozoic Foraminiferida and Bryozoa have been found in silicified limestone pebbles collected from the sandstones of the San Cayetano Formation in the Sierra del Rosario (western Cuba). All but one specimen of Foraminiferida belong to the Fusulinaeea and include Schwagerina sp. and Parafusulina sp. One specimen of Tetrataxis sp. has been found together with the bryozoan Rhabdomeson sp. The schwagerinids are of Permian (probably Leonardian) age, and the other fossils are of Carboniferous or Permian age. The fossiliferous pebbles were derived from Late Paleozoic rocks located at least some hundred kilometers from the San Cayetano basin during Middle Jurassic to Oxfordian time. The schwagerinid-bearing pebble of Permian age could have been transported from Central America, southwestern North America or northwestern South America (?). Characteristic schwagerinid species in this area are Paraschwagerina magna Skinner and Wilde, Schwagerina hawkinsiformis Igo, Chalaro schwagerina kalmykovae Davy do v, and Pseudofusulina duplithecata Igo. These and some other species in and around this area are common to and deeply connected faunistically with those of the Mino Tamba Terrane and some Circum-Pacific terranes including Nadanhada, Sikhote-Alin, Koryak, Oregon, and California. They are completely absent in the Permian Akiyoshi Terrane. Foraminiferal faunal similarities between Jurassic terranes of Japan and these Circum-Pacific terranes are important paleogeographically and technically, and strongly suggest the dispersal of these terranes from the Panthalassan domain. TheJigoku-dani area, the main area for investigation, is located in the northwestern part of the Akiyoshi Plateau, where the Middle Carboniferous and Lower Permian limestones are widely exposed. They are mainly composed of micritic limestones, indicating a lagoonal facies, in the relatively low energy environments within the Akiyoshi organicreefcomplex. The limestones are alsocharacterized by abundant and well-preserved fusulinaccans, and the following nine zones including seven subzones, were recognized in ascending order as: 1. The distribution of these fusulinacean zones shows well the inverted structure of limestones in this area. A 155 m carbonate succession of the Picacho Colorado Formation, exposed on the east side of Cerro Picacho Colorado, a few kilometers southeast of Cobachi, consists of pinkish and reddish limestone, cherty limestone with some recrystallization, and bioclastic gray limestone. Crinoids, bryozoa, brachiopods and fo- raminifers are present indicating a marine shallow water shelf depositional environment. Well pre- served fusulinaceans occur near the top of the section, but are scarce, partially silicified, and poorly preserved in the middle part and the base of the section.

Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 56 (1): 181–194. The types of the species belonging to the fusulinid genera Schubertella and Eoschubertella were examined from publica− tions and type collections. Eoschubertella in general possesses all the features of Schubertella and therefore is a junior synonym of the latter. However, the concept of Eoschubertella best describes the genus Schubertina with its type species Schubertina curculi. Schubertina is closely related to the newly established genus Grovesella the concept of which is emended in this paper. Besides Schubertella, Schubertina, and Grovesella, the genera Mesoschubertella, Biwaella are re− viewed and three new species, Grovesella nevadensis, Biwaella zhikalyaki, and Biwaella poletaevi, are described. The phylogenetic relationships of all Pennsylvanian–Cisuralian schubertellids are also proposed. Barrel−shaped Grovesella suggested being the very first schubertellid that appears sometimes in the middle–late Bashkirian time. In late Bashkirian it is then developed into ovoid to fusiform Schubertina. The latter genus gave rise into Schubertella in early Moscovian. First Fusiella derived from Schubertella in late Moscovian, Biwaella—in early Gzhelian and Boultonia—in late Gzhelian time. Many microphotographs of fusuline and non-fusuline foraminifers are illustrated to reconsider the foraminiferal information of the Funabuseyama faunas and to compare with the coeval faunas in and outside of Japan. Thirty-one species of Middle Permian fusulines are systematically described. Fusuline faunas in the Mino Terrane, characterized by the component of Acervoschwagerina, Parafusulina japonica, and Yabeina, are similar to most of those in other Jurassic terranes of Japan, but different from those of the Permian terranes of Japan where these three taxa are almost absent. Of them six species are new. They are Pseudosta//eJla minaroi, P. subrotunda, FusulineJla rhomboidalis, Triticites katol, T. iehinotaniensis and T. elongatus. The following fusulind zones are established; Zone of Eosta//ella, Zone of Pro­ /usulinella, Lower Zone of FuslllineiJa-Fusulina, Zone of Beedeina, Upper Zone of Fusulinella-Fusulina, Zone of Tritieites, Zone of Pseudosch wagerina, and Zone of Pseudo­ /usulina. As a whole fusulinid s treated in this paper show similarity to those of China, Korea, and especially to those of the USSR. Lithologic sequence and fusulinid succession suggest that the fusulinid fauna in Fukuji ranges continuously from the Upper Visean to the Sakmarian, although evidence for Namurian, Vereyan , and Upper UraHan is not at all clear. Introduction Fukuji is a small hot spring spa, some 5 km west of an active volcano, Mt. Yake on the border between the Nagano and Gifu Prefecture, Central Japan.
