in the MiamiValley History Offke Aeronautical Systems Center Air Force Materiel Command ii FOREWORD Less than one hundred years ago, Lord Kelvin, the most prominent scientist of his generation, remarked that he had not “the smallest molecule of faith’ in any form of flight other than ballooning. Within a decade of his damningly pessimistic statement, the Wright brothers were routinely puttering through the skies above Huffman Prairie, pirouetting about in their frail pusher biplanes. They were there because, unlike Kelvin, they saw opportunity, not difficulty, challenge, not impossibility. And they had met that challenge, seized that opportunity, by taking the work of their minds, transforming it by their hands, making a series of gliders and, then, finally, an actual airplane that they flew. Flight testing was the key to their success. The history of flight testing encompassesthe essential history of aviation itself. For as long as humanity has aspired to fly, men and women of courage have moved resolutely from intriguing concept to practical reality by testing the result of their work in actual flight. In the eighteenth and nineteenth century, notable pioneers such asthe French Montgolfier brothers, the German Otto Lilienthal, and the American Octave Chanute blended careful study and theoretical speculation with the actual design, construction, and testing of flying vehicles. Flight testing reallycame ofage with the Wright bro!hers whocarefullycombined a thorough understanding of the problem and potentiality of flight with-for their time-sophisticated ground and flight-test methodolo- gies and equipment. After their success above the dunes at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17,1903, the brothers determined to refine their work and generate practical aircraft capable of routine operation. -

Nicholas M. Saum, PhD Inducted into the U.S. Ballooning Hall of Fame on July 28, 2019 By the Balloon Federation of America at the National Balloon Museum in Indianola, Iowa Nicholas M. Saum, PhD, contributed selflessly to the field of aviation, and aerostation in particular, over the course of a long and colorful career. He set dozens of World and National Records in Altitude, Distance and Duration in a rozier balloon he built himself. He authored the Propane and Fuel Management handbook for the BFA, and contributed to the Balloon Flying Handbook published by the FAA. He served on the launch teams of many of Steve Fossett’s circumglobal balloon attempts, as the crew chief and launch director for the German team on the Chrysler TransAtlantic balloon race, and on Kevin Uliassi’s J. Renee 1 circumglobal attempts. He taught many students how to fly both hot air and gas balloons, and served as an FAA Designated Examiner for balloons. While Nick prided himself on his irascible manner, he was the first to step up to service, to support fellow aeronauts, to research, experiment and publish in the field of safety, and to lend his considerable intellectual prowess to the growing body of knowledge in our sport. As a young man, Nick loved to hunt pheasants and shoot skeet. He regularly participated in fox hunts, and enjoyed riding horses. He enjoyed roller skating, entering dance competitions, and tinkering with carts. After teaching himself Morse Code, Nick obtained a job with the Illinois Central Railroad. Later, in the US Army, he served as a Morse Code Interceptor in Okinawa. -

The Stratobowl Flights of the 1930’s Teaching Tip Wind Study: For a Lifetime Wind Study: For a Lifetime During this activity your students will learn about two 1930s balloon flights launched near Rapid City that provided invaluable scientific data about the nature of the Earth's atmosphere at the edge of space, also setting an altitude record that would stand for 21 years. The students will then participate in a qualitative wind speed study. Both aircrafts were assembled and sent aloft from an unusual bowl-shaped gorge in the Black Hills. A flat patch of land surrounded by high, steep cliffs provided shelter from wind and the best-possible conditions for inflating and launching large, lighter-than-air craft. The formation is now known as the Stratobowl. Banner Images from September Issue The bridge was the Fraser River Bridge designed by C. Conrad Schneider, President of the ASCE in 1905. It was designed prior to the Niagara Cantilever Bridge by Schneider but the Niagara Bridge was built first due to the late delivery of the iron that had to be shipped from England for the Fraser River Bridge. The two bridges were the first cantilever bridges with a suspended span between the two river piers. A cantilever Fraser River Cantilever, 1884 to 1910 was chosen, as it was impossible to place falsework in the river upon which to build a simple span truss bridge. The Fraser River Bridge finally opened in 1884. It was removed in 1910 and rebuilt over the Niagara Creek and is now called the Frisco Bridge. Charles C. Schneider, President ASCE 1905 The engineer was George S. Morison, President ASCE 1895. He was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1842 and attended Phillips Exeter and Harvard University. He trained to be a lawyer and was admitted to the Bar but chose to pursue a career in civil engineering. His first position was with Octave Chanute on the construction of the Missouri River Bridge. He followed Chanute to the Erie Railroad, which was upgrading its track and bridges. After a fire destroyed the Portage Bridge across the Genesee Gorge near Rochester, he replaced it with an iron bridge within 86 days. -

Papers of the Dakota Conference A National Conference on the Northern Plains Index: 1990-2010 Compiled by: Amanda Jenson Team The Center for Western Studies Preface The Center for Western Studies (CWS) of Augustana College is pleased to make available this index to the Papers of the Dakota Conference on Northern Plains History, Literature, Art, and Archaeology for the years 1990 to 2010. Over the years, many individuals have contributed to this index. This update, for 2008 to 2010, was done by Collections Assistant Amanda Jenson. In 1989, following the Twenty-second Annual Dakota History Conference, Dakota State University, the home of the conference since its founding in February 1969, invited South Dakota institutions to consider sponsoring the conference, since the academic program at Dakota State no longer accommodated a history conference. The Center for Western Studies agreed to administer the conference beginning in 1990, with the promise of financial support consideration from the South Dakota Humanities Council. The Humanities Council provided grant support for the conference annually from 1990 to 2008, in response to competitive proposals submitted by CWS. Over the years, significant additional financial support has been received from several individuals and organizations. For twenty-one years, the Center for Western Studies has not only administered the conference but has also expanded its scope to include the northern Great Plains and welcomed papers on literature, art, and archaeology as well as history. Dedicated to examining regional issues in their historical and cultural contexts, the Dakota Conference is now a signature event of CWS, which provides programming in Northern Plains studies at Augustana College. -
