Thomas Stone High School College and Career Newsletter Thomas Stone High School College and Career Newsletter Ava Morton – College & Career Advisor April 2017 [email protected] 301-753-1756 ATTENTION SENIORS Ms. Morton will be visiting the seniors in their English classes to remind students of upcoming important dates. Also later in the month of April a Senior Survey will be distributed. The information received is used to prepare the Senior Awards Ceremony and Graduation programs. Seniors must list what they plan to do after high school and any scholarships or grants that they have received. Documentation must be provided to verify all information on the survey. Ms. Morton must receive all documentation no later than May 5 for information to appear in the graduation program. Gear Up for College Entrance Exams The Best Testing Schedule There is no one test plan or schedule that is best for everyone. It depends on your schedule, your ability to prep, the classes you are taking, and many other factors. But since we are always pressed for an answer, we will tell you one schedule that works well for many students. Class of 2018 consider taking the SAT test in May and June. You may need to reserve May for AP tests and SAT Subject tests in the same subjects (if required). Juniors, if you are taking the ACT, consider the June test. The advantage of this plan is that you have a place to start from and can spend the summer prepping for your fall test(s). This allows you to use the fall of senior year for getting your applications in early. If you are applying to schools with very early deadlines, such as November 1, you will need to register to take the SAT in October or the ACT in September. If you are still not satisfied with your scores, you may still have the opportunity to take your test one more time in December. We do not recommend taking the SAT or ACT more than three times, but the testing strategy is obviously your decision. Prepping and Registering for the Tests The sad reality is that prepping for the SAT, ACT, and SAT Subject tests has become the rule, not the exception. You must face the fact that students competing with you are probably prepping for these tests in some way. Our advice is to prep for the test one way or another, by the best method you can afford. At least purchase a book of real practice SATs and take them at home. Time yourself. You have resources available to you through Khan Academy and Study Island at school, you should take advantage. Here are some ways to prep in order of least expensive to most: Internet resources or Study Island at no cost (samples tests, practice questions, etc.), Books and Software (go to amazon.com or other on-line book stores and search on SAT Prep or Test prep), Online courses, Classes, Private Tutors Here are some resources for test prep at all levels (in no particular order): www.khanacademy.org/sat www.prepme.com – one of the newer services www.actstudent.org - online registration and prep for ACT www.Number2.com - free SAT coaching www.revolutionprep.com – relatively new program with several options www.princetonreview.com - a popular service – test prep and more www.kaplan.com – another popular service for test prep www.slyvanlearning.com – another popular service for test prep www.collegeboard.com online registration and prep for SAT www.testu.com - free coaching for SAT www.EurekaReview.com – a newer service www.freevocabulary.com - 5000 vocabulary words that may be on SAT www.testprepreview.com/ - practice tests and advice FairTest: This list includes institutions that are “test optional”, “test flexible” or otherwise de-emphasize the use of standardized tests by making admissions decisions about substantial numbers of applicants who recently graduated from U.S. high schools without using the SAT or ACT. www.fairtest.org/university/optional ACT 2017-2018 Test Dates SAT 2017-2018 www.actstudent. Action-SS June 13, 2017 Attachments BOARD OF EDUCATION OF CHARLES COUNTY AGENDA ITEM SUBJECT FY 2018 Educational Facilities Master Plan (EFMP) OVERVIEW The EFMP is the first step in the state's school construction program process that leads to the development and approval of a state supported Capital Improvements Program (CIP). Revisions to the EFMP are submitted annually to the Maryland Department of Planning by July 1. This plan is an “identification of needs document.” The CIP is developed later in the fall of each year and addresses these needs with careful consideration to project costs and affordability discussions with county government. BUDGET IMPLICATIONS The EFMP is used to develop and prioritize both the state and local CIP. Funding consideration by the Interagency Committee on School Construction will be given to a local board's CIP only if a current EFMP is on file. STAKEHOLDERS INVOLVED To ensure our system's facilities needs are objectively identified for the Board of Education’s (BOE) programming consideration, central office and local government staffs assisted in the development and refinement of the EFMP documents. DESCRIPTION A synopsis of the required elements of the EFMP is included with this plan (attachment). Careful consideration was given to the long standing dialogue between the County Commissioners and the BOE relating to the Adequate Public Facilities Ordinance, and the responsiveness of the CIP to the county’s growth within the state and local anticipated revenues. The focus of the EFMP is reflected in the proposed project schedule along with the systemic renovations plan. This year’s update follows our normal review of maintenance records, systems normal life expectancy records, and growth in the county; but also includes consideration of the new System Wide Capital Improvements Program (educational survey and assessment by GWWO Architects).
