THE HARD REPORT 3 FEBRUARY 26, 1993 New Releases Drivin-N-Cryin. "Smoke" Island/PLG After five releases and sales reaching 500,000 on the last album, these Southern rockers are primed and ready for some heavy action at the format. Smoke is their most A LIB-ur 5 focused album to date, offering the best elements from their last five Lw Tw Artist Album albums. It kicks in with a "wake up call" and rocks with the "in-your- face rocker", "Back Against The Wall" (positively a future single). "She 1 1 Mick Ja er "Wanderin S irit" Doesn't Want To Go" has a very catchy and repetitious (in a good way) D 2 Van Halen "RI ht Here Ri ht Now" guitar riff. Where there's "smoke" there's trouble, and the title track A 3 3 R.E.M "Automatic For The Peo le" kicks ass and is down right nasty! The band's roots shine through on 2 4 Spin Doctors "Pocket Full Of ..." "When You Come Back" (custom made for a David Lynch film). A 7 5 L n rd Sk n rd "The Last Rebel" "Patron Lady Beautiful" starts off sweetly with a Hendrix vibe but quick- A 6 6 Keith Richards "Main Offender" ly spirals into a passionate rocker with Kinnney's killer vocals. "1000 5 7 Pearl Jam Swings" has the group's trademark groove, while "1988" gets funky in A 9 8 U.I Kid Joe "America's Least Wanted" an Aerosrnith kind of fashion. One of the best tracks on the album is A 10 9 I, Stradlin "I Stradlin/Ju'u ..." "Whiskey Soul Woman." There are a ton of emotion and tempo changes D 10 Brian Ma "Back To The Li . ht" to make it very appealing. "What's The Difference" shows the depth of A 20 11 Peter Gabriel "US" DNC and "Eastern European Carny Man" is a soulful Alternative num- A 15 12 Jack I "Jack l" ber dedicated to Marco Sunset and Soul Asylum. "All Around The A 14 13 Jeff Heale "Feel This" World" should be a show stopper live, and "Tum It Up or Turn It Off" A 19 14 The Tra. icall Hi. A 17 16 Neil Yount "Harvest Moon" Bg Head Todd & The Monsters. "Sister Sweetly" Giant Triple A 11 17 Soul Asylum "Grave Dancers Union" and upper demo AORs are having a field day with the latest from Big A 22 18 Masters Of Reali "Sunrise On The ..." Head Todd. "Broken Hearted Savior" is something straight from the A 25 19 Dream Theater "Ima . es And Words" Heartland of America, that everybody can relate too. "Sister Sweetly" A 23 20 Paul McCartne "Off The Ground" shows off the tight harmonies between Todd Park Mohr, Rob Squires, A 21 21 Testament "The Ritual" and Brian Nevin. "Turn Out The Light" is one of the strongest moments A 24 22 Damn Yankees "Don't Tread" on the album with a memorable hook and killer biting guitar. The Blues 12 23 Bon Jovi The Faith" flavored "Tomorrow Never Comes" is emotionally haunting, while "It's A 27 24 Collision "Collision" Alright" will be another upper demo favorite. "Groove Thing" shows a 4 25 Black *owes "The Southern Harmon ... 51 different side of the group and takes on a funky trip. "Soul For Every A 26 26 Suicidal Tendencies "The Art Of ..." Cowboy" is a shining example of their Country roots (they wear them A 29 27 Alice In Chains "Dirt" well), with a little help from the legendary Leo Kottke.
