Grade 7 Bake Sale

By Anna Starzko, Brady Suchy, Hayden Eastwood, and Kaden Bugge.

On Wednesday, December 11th, The grade 7 class will be hosting a school wide bake sale at noon. All money collected will go to the Canadian Cancer Society. The class will also be auctioning off gingerbread houses that were made by the class. The items being sold include brownies, cookies, snicker-doodles, cupcakes, jello, cupcakes, rice crispy squares, cinnamon buns, donuts, and muffins.

Many students in our class have been affected by cancer in some way, so the students have decided to donate their money to the Canadian Cancer Society. In 1938 the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) was founded. The CCS vision is a world where no one fears cancer. With the support of volunteers and donors, they improve and save lives by taking a comprehensive approach to their work against more than 100 types of cancer.

CCS funds research, provides services to those living with cancer, advocates on important cancer-related issues and educates and empowers people to make healthy choices. When you make a gift to the Society, your money will help fund the most promising research projects in the country on all types of cancer.

In Health 7, students have been learning about volunteerism. It is important for Grade 7 students to use their knowledge and skills by volunteering and being involved in their school. In response to why volunteering is important, Grade 7 student Ty Rude said, “I think it’s important to have these kinds of fundraisers to give back to the community.” Please come out and support the grade 7 as they volunteer for a great cause. Christmas Hamper Toy Drive: The Ryley School Students’ Union is organizing a collection for the & Ryley Area Christmas Hampers.

A reminder to parents and students that winter can be brutal: Remember to be prepared, with the temperature dropping. Please encourage your child(ren) to wear suitable clothing and have gloves and a toque in their back pack.

Is my school bus running today? The winter months are well known for their harshness – temperatures drop, snow falls, fog sets in and sometimes school bus schedules are affected. Battle River School Division is trying to make it easier for families to know if their specific school bus is operating and if it’s running on time on those nasty winter mornings. Decisions on bus operation are made before 7:00AM in order for families to make plans as early as possible. Please go to https://ryley.brsd.ab.ca/ and scroll down to Bus Status. Each bus route is listed and information will be updated before 7:00 a.m. Ryley School remains open on days the buses are not running due to inclement weather.

Parent / Student Portal: Have you signed up for “PARENT PORTAL” yet? If not, did you know you can access your student’s marks and attendance online? Please contact Ryley School for information on how to set this up.

Your BRSD Career Counsellors, Lynda Kope & Carla Praticante [email protected] The Alberta government wants your input on youth vaping legislation The provincial government recently launched a public consultation on youth vaping legislation and other possible amendments to the Tobacco and Smoking Reduction Act.

The rates of youth vaping almost tripled in Alberta between 2015 and 2017 with over 35,000 school-aged youth now using vaping products.

Flavoured, disguised and appealing vaping products like Juul, Vype and Logic are largely to blame for the explosive rise in teen vaping according to various health organizations. These products contain high levels of nicotine in a new formulation that makes them particularly addictive.

Schools across Alberta are struggling to address youth vaping and many have resorted to suspensions and other punitive measures in an attempt to address this escalating problem.

Health groups believe that strong provincial legislation is required to stop tobacco and vaping companies from targeting youth. The Campaign for a Smoke-Free Alberta is urging the government to align restrictions on the sale, use, promotion and display of vaping products with those on tobacco products.

Alberta and Saskatchewan are the only provinces that have not passed laws to regulate vaping products.
