Dr. Ralph, The Ryman, & the Redneck Taco: Martin’s BBQ Joint of Nolensville, Tennessee Posted on July 22, 2013 I finally made good on a trip I’d wanted to make for some time. I headed north to Nashville’s legendary Ryman Auditorium for one of their summer Bluegrass Nights. The equally legendary, and nearly as old, Ralph Stanley was headlining in possibly his last full concert appearance at the Mother Church. A farewell concert by a first generation Bluegrass legend at ground zero for Bluegrass music was a recipe for success. Always on the lookout for new places to eat, I noticed that Southern food guru John T. Edge had listed something called the Redneck Taco at Nolensville’s Martin’s BBQ Joint on his Garden & Gun 100 Southern Foods. There’s not a better combination than barbeque and Bluegrass, so I put Nolensville onto my travel map and started toward Nashville. Martin’s apparently used to be a bit more of a hole in the wall (which I enjoy), but the new place is a stand alone building in nicer shopping area. Good sign number one: smoke was billowing out. The smell of pork filled the air. The inside is properly porky, signs and artifacts cover the walls. The restaurant was busy, but there was no wait time when I was there. You walk by a very large menu board that highlights “The Notorious Redneck Taco.” There are several meat options, each with its own sauce recommendation. I went with the basic pulled pork with Sweet Dixie Sauce. -

The Doo-Wahs are an amazing band with a unique, original sound using guitars, fiddles, harmonica, accordion and of course, their voices! They define their sound as "high energy country with a cajun twist". Their tight musicianship and powerful arrangements of classic and original songs have made them favorites everywhere they go! BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS Country Music has its origins in the folk music of Great Britain and Ireland. The music changed and grew in America because of the influence of music brought from other parts of Europe, Latin America and Africa. Country Music moved from the farm to modern America due to radio. Artists became professionals, but the simple harmonies and themes of writing about working people has never changed. In the 1950’s country Music started to become strongly influenced by cross over artists like Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. Today, Country Music is being strongly influenced by pop music. VOCABULARY WORDS Cajun music The music of Louisiana. Strongly influenced by the local French descendants. The predominant instruments of Cajun music are the fiddle and the accordion. Country music An American musical style with roots in the South. It is also strongly influenced by Western cowboy music and folk music. Most of the instrumentation country music is in string instruments such as banjos, guitars and violin, and a non-string instrument such as the harmonica. -

Discography of the Turbo Label
The Labels of Joe and Sylvia Robinson The All-Platinum Label was formed by Joe and Sylvia Robinson, husband and wife in New Jersey in 1969. Sylvia Robinson was one-half of the duo Mickey and Sylvia of “Love is Strange” fame. George Kerr and the Robinson’s were responsible for A&R. Joe Robinson had parlayed a music publishing company that he established years before in New York into the All-Platinum, Stang, and Turbo record labels. Artists included his wife Sylvia, The Moments, Brother to Brother, Shirley and Company, Linda Jones, Jack McDuff and Chuck Jackson The labels were All-Platinum, Stang, Turbo and Vibration. All-Platinum distributed Charisma (US) which released Malcolm X recordings, More which released Eldridge Cleaver recordings and Maple which released R&B and Psychedelic. In the late 70’s All-Platinum went bankrupt. The Robinson’s then formed Sugar Hill Records in 1979 with Milton Malden and financial funding of Morris Levy, the owner of Roulette Records and pioneered Rap Music The Sugar Hill label's first record was "Rapper's Delight" (1979) by The Sugarhill Gang, which was also the first Top 40 hip hop single. Afterwards Grandmaster Flash, The Sequence, Funky Four Plus One, Crash Crew, Kool Moe Dee, The West Street Mob, and Melle Mel joined the label. Sugar Hill's in-house producer and arranger was Clifton "Jiggs" Chase. The in-house recording engineer was Steve Jerome. Al Goodman, leader of The Moments, ran the show and George Kerr was a major producer. Joe and Sylvia's sons Joey and Leland were also active in the business. -

Deana Carter Danny Myrick
Deana Carter DEANA CARTER, the daughter of famed studio guitarist and producer Fred Carter, Jr., grew up surrounded by musical greats, including Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings, and Simon & Garfunkel. She developed her songwriting skills at writer’s nights throughout Nashville, but her real break came when one of her demo tapes fell into the hands of Willie Nelson, who remembered Deana as a child. Impressed with how she’d grown as a songwriter, Nelson asked Deana to perform along with John Mellencamp, Kris Kristofferson, and Neil Young, as the only female solo artist to appear at Farm Aid VII in 1994. Her 1996 debut album Did I Shave My Legs for This? quickly climbed to the top of both the country and pop charts, quickly achieving multi-platinum status. "Strawberry Wine,” the first single from the album, was awarded CMA's 1997 Single of the Year. Seven albums and a decade later, Deana is still writing and producing for both the pop/rock and country markets when not on the road touring. Her superstar success continues to be evident. Her chart topper “You & Tequila,” co-written with Matraca Berg and recorded by Kenny Chesney, was nominated in 2011 as CMA’s “Song of the Year” and received two Grammy nods. Carter also recently co-wrote and produced a new album for recording artist Audra Mae while putting the finishing touches on her own Southern Way of Life that hit the shelves last December.
