RESOURCES AND BIBLIOGRAPHY ON FEMALE SEXUAL DEVIANCE AND SEXUALLY ABUSIVE/CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR

Compiled by Alan Listiak, Ph.D. Revised, May 2004

NOTE: This bibliography focuses on female child/adolescent molestation, sexual aggression/assault/rape, incest, paraphilias, sexual compulsivity/addiction, sexual harassment, and a general, but relevant, review of female sexuality and femininity. The main section of the bibliography presents literature covering all topical areas. Separate sections cover specific topics as listed below.

Prostitution, pornography, and lesbianism are not included as topics in this bibliography. The literature on each of these three topics is huge and fraught with conceptual, historical, and ideological difficulties and debates about whether each of them (or aspects of each) is a form of female sexual deviance.

The Male Survivor group has a bibliography on males who have been sexually victimized by males and females that is available at http://www.malesurvivor.org/Professionals/professional%20bibliography.htm. And Jim Hopper has a bibliography on “Sexual Abuse of Males: Prevalence, Possible Lasting Effects, & Resources,” that includes female perpetrators and is available at http://www.jimhopper.com/male-ab/.

The research on men who report being sexually victimized by women has been compiled by Martin Fiebert in an annotated bibliography that covers 40 empirical studies and 2 reviews up to the year 2000. Fiebert reviews the number of men who report victimization in these studies and the types of coercion they experienced. Only some of the studies reviewed by Fiebert in his bibliography are cited in this bibliography.

Whiting, Glynis (2001). When Girls Do It.

Description: (quoting from two descriptions on the web) When Girls Do It takes an unflinching look at the motivations of female sexual predators, the devastating effects on their victims, and the reluctance of victims to come forward. This 45-minute documentary reveals the human reality behind sexual abuse by women; healing those who have survived abuse, treating female offenders and preventing countless other children from becoming victims. Featuring powerful interviews and compelling testimony, it shows how important it is to acknowledge the enormity of female sexual offenses, and encourages victims to speak out against this devastating crime. The documentary delves into related issues including the long-held misconception that sexual abuse of children is exclusively a male crime. The website http://www.whengirlsdoit.com is no longer active.

Contents: A sleepy Northern town is shocked when a 19 year old woman and her husband are charged with the sexual abuse of local children and teens. An adolescent boy is forced to have sex with his social worker who later gives birth to their son. A Texas school teacher undergoes treatment after sexually abusing one of her students.

(1994). Scared Silent: Incest.

Description: Oprah Winfrey opens this program by explaining that most sexual abusers were once victims of abuse themselves. A teenage victim of incest describes how she was sexually abused by her father for years. Fearing the breakup of her family, she remained silent. Finally, she and her sister told their mother and confronted the father. A counselor explains how far children will go the keep their family intact. In another segment, a 15-year-old abuser and victim tells a counseling group how she was abused by her brother. She in turn, inflicted the same sexual abuse upon several other young victims, including her young cousin. Comments from her counselor give insight into the heart and soul of an abuser. This program provides compelling media support to Health units on incest, child abuse, family life, domestic violence, and safety. It also may be used for ancillary support in classes dealing with rape prevention and survival, and behaviors associated with substance abuse. VHS video cassettes of this program may be purchased for private home use.

RITUAL SEXUAL ABUSE, DAY CARE, AND RELATED ISSUES

Women figure prominently in the allegations and investigations into ritual sexual abuse, especially in the context of daycare, but also including parents, teachers, relatives, neighbors, Satanic and other cults, and various others. Searches of the literature and the Internet yielded only one report of the characteristics of persons accused of such crimes (a small, simple study by Goodyear-Smith, et al. 1998) and two descriptive studies by Finkelhor in the late 1980s. No specific reports of assessment and/or treatment of women accused or convicted of such crimes were found. There is information about the numerous cases and the issues stemming from them – interviewing, assessment and treatment of victims; dissociation and dissociative (multiple personality) disorder; false accusations; accuracy of memory (especially of children); recovered memory; ; ; impact on victims; impact on falsely accused; cults and Satanism; the existence of ritual abuse; social contagion and moral panics; and much more. Only a brief sampling of this literature is presented here.

For a pro-survivor group, see the S.M.A.R.T.web page at http://members.aol.com/smartnews/index2.html. S.M.A.R.T. puts out a bi- monthly new letter and holds conferences about “the possible connections between secretive organizations, ritual abuse and mind control. The web page has numerous links and articles and back issues of the newsleter.
