  • A Bayesian Hierarchical Model to Estimate the Framing Ability of Major League Baseball Catchers
A Bayesian Hierarchical Model To Estimate the Framing Ability of Major League Baseball Catchers Sameer K. Deshpande and Abraham J. Wyner Statistics Department, The Wharton School University of Pennsylvania 26 September 2015 Introduction • What exactly is framing? I A catcher's effect on the likelihood a taken pitch is called a strike. • Should we even care about framing? I Lots of attention in popular presst I Several articles on Baseball Prospectus and Hardball Times I \Good framer" can save ∼ 15 - 25 runs per season. I Teams seem to care: Hank Conger, Russell Martin Deshpande & Wyner Catcher Framing NESSIS 2015 2 / 15 Fundamental Question and Our Contribution For any given taken pitch, what is the catcher's effect on likelihood of pitch being called strike over and above factors like: • Pitch Location • Pitch Context: Count, base runners, score differential, etc. • Pitch Participants: batter, pitcher, umpire Our contributions: • Hierarchical Bayesian logistic regression model of called strike probability • Value of a called strike as function of count • Uncertainty estimates of framing impact (runs saved on average) Deshpande & Wyner Catcher Framing NESSIS 2015 3 / 15 PITCHf/x Data PITCHf/x data scraped from MLB Advanced Media: • Horizontal and vertical coordinate of pitch as it crosses plate • Approximate vertical boundaries for the strike zone • Umpire, pitcher, catcher, batter identities • Count Focus only on the 320,308 taken pitches within 1 ft. of the strike zone. Deshpande & Wyner Catcher Framing NESSIS 2015 4 / 15 Parameterizing Pitch Location (a) Distance from strike zone, R (b) Angles from horizontal and vertical Figure: R;'1;'2 for RHB Deshpande & Wyner Catcher Framing NESSIS 2015 5 / 15 Bayesian Logistic Regression Model For umpire u, log-odds of calling a strike is a linear function of: R;'1;'2; and indicators for batter, catcher, pitcher, and count Let Θ(u) be vector of covariate partial effects.

  • Clips for 7-12-10
MEDIA CLIPS – July 18, 2017 Rox seek 3rd straight win in Senzatela's return By Max Gelman / MLB.com | 9:36 AM ET Antonio Senzatela's demotion to Triple-A Albuquerque was short-lived, as the young right-hander will make his return for the Rockies on Tuesday to start against the Padres and Dinelson Lamet. Colorado has won back-to-back games for the first time since a six-game streak from June 14-20. Senzatela will be making his first MLB start since June 22 when he gave up nine runs in five innings to the D-backs. He made two relief appearances following that outing and was then optioned to Albuquerque for a start. He threw 3 1/3 innings for the Isotopes on July 13 and gave up one run on four hits. While in the bullpen, Senzatela's fastball velocity jumped. His fastball averaged 94 mph in June, but in relief, it averaged 95.3 mph. "I got to see the game from a different view," Senzatela said of his relief outings. "It taught me to go in, be more aggressive and finish the hitter real quick. I worked quick, and I felt good. I looked to get out there hitter in two or three pitches -- dominate." For the Padres, Lamet will make his first career start against the Rockies. The young righty has a 5.93 ERA in 41 innings. 1 It's been all or nothing for Lamet through his first eight big league starts. The rookie has a legit three-pitch mix, and all three project as Major League-caliber out pitches.

MATH WORKSHEETS 4th Grade: Read and answer questions 1. If a starting pitcher throws about 90 pitches per game, and pitches in about 32 games per season, about how many pitches per year will the pitcher throw? How many pitches did our starting pitcher throw in the game today? If this is his average pitch count in 29 total games, how many will he throw? 2. Before 2019, Charlie Blackmon had played 920 games for the Rockies in 8 seasons. Todd Helton played 2247 games in 17 seasons, the most in Rockies history. If Charlie plays for the Rockies as long as Todd, how many games per season does he need to play to break Todd’s record? 3. In a recent game, Trevor Story got 2 hits in 4 at-bats and Ian Desmond got 1 hit in 2 at-bats. Write Story’s hits per at-bats and Desmond’s hits per at-bats as fractions and compare them using a <, =, or > sign. Draw a model of the fractions to justify your choice. 2020 MATH DAY MATH WORKSHEETS 4. If German Marquez pitches 2/3 of a 9-inning game and Scott Oberg pitches the rest, how many innings does Scott Oberg pitch? How would you write that as a fraction of a 9-inning game? Each team gets 27 outs in a 9-inning game. Can you see how many outs our starting pitcher got? 5. If Nolan Arenado gets 34 hits in his first 100 at-bats of the season, what would his batting average be? How many hits does Nolan have in the season so far? Can you show how to get his average? 2020 MATH DAY MATH WORKSHEETS 6.
