“The Good :11-21

I. is the (v. 11a)

A. Jesus is claiming to be God

“Hear us , O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock, you who sit enthroned between the cherubim.” (Psalm 80:1)

B. Jesus is the morally pure shepherd

C. Jesus is the beautiful shepherd

“The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying, ‘I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving kindness.” (Jeremiah 31:3)

“But I, when lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself.” (:32)

II. The Good Shepherd dies for the (v. 11b-13)

A. Jesus’ death was the plan of God

“This man was handed over to you by God’s set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross.” (Acts 2:23)

B. Jesus’ death was voluntary

C. Jesus’ death was vicarious

“But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5)

D. Jesus’ death was victorious’

“Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death – that is the devil.” (Hebrews 2:14)

E. Jesus’ death was motivated by his love

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus laid down his life for us.” ( I :16a)

III. The Good Shepherd knows His sheep (v. 14-15)

A. Jesus knows us personally

B. Jesus knows our needs

C. Jesus knows our nature

D. Jesus knows our potential

IV. The Good Shepherd searches for lost sheep (v. 16)

A. Jesus calls out to all people to follow him

“For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.” (I Peter 5:4)

B. All who believe in Jesus are united in one family

V. The Good Shepherd was raised back to life (v. 17-18)

A. Jesus had authority to offer his life on the cross for us

B. Jesus had authority to take his life back from the grave

“And who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 1:4)

C. Jesus had authority because of the command of God

“May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep.” (Hebrews 13:20)

VI. The Good Shepherd divides mankind (v. 19-21)

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all his with him, he will sit on this throne in heavenly glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world……The he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” (Matthew 25:31-34, 41)
