Through the research, design and remodeling of her own domestic and external environments, Andrea Zittel creates experimental living structures that comprise an evolving body of different systems for living. Her work, which was seen in the 2004 Whitney Biennial, centers on the recognition that rules—generally understood as externally prescribed and largely inviolable--are fundamentally arbitrary and can be reconfigured, investigated and explored on an individual basis. Embracing the notion that all aspects of ones existence, however quotidian and typically overlooked, can be an opportunity for contemplation, Zittel’s practice explodes the unfortunate move towards universal standardization we experience in contemporary life, seeking to balance the tension between individuality and community, beauty and use, material clarity/truthfulness and conceptual rigor This exhibition is organized by Shamim M. Momin, Associate Curator, Whitney Museum of America Art, and Branch Director and Curator, Whitney Museum of American Art at Altria. Zittel's current project A-Z West (in Joshua Tree, CA), a culmination of the past ten years of experimentation with these systems of living, is a fully realized compound and community within the harsh, largely inhospitable, desert environment.

    ALLAN McCOLLUM Brief career summary Allan McCollum was born in Los Angeles, California in 1944 and now lives and works in New York City. He has spent over thirty years exploring how objects achieve public and personal meaning in a world constituted in mass production, focusing most recently on collaborations with small community historical society museums in different parts of the world. His first solo exhibition was in 1970 in Southern California, where he was represented throughout the early 70s in Los Angeles by the Nicholas Wilder Gallery, until it’s closing in the late 70s, and subsequently by the Claire S. Copley Gallery, also in Los Angeles. After appearing in group exhibitions at the Pasadena Art Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, his first New York showing was in an exhibition at the Sidney Janis Gallery, in 1972. He was included in the Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial Exhibition in 1975, and moved to New York later that same year. In 1978 He became known for his series Surrogate Paintings, which were shown in solo exhibitions in New York at Julian Pretto & Co., Artistspace, and 112 Workshop (subsequently known as White Columns), in 1979. In 1980, he was given his first solo exhibition in Europe, at the Yvon Lambert Gallery, in Paris, France, and in that same year began exhibiting his work at the Marian Goodman Gallery in New York, where he introduced his series Plaster Surrogates in a large solo exhibition in 1983. McCollum began showing his work with the Lisson Gallery in London, England, in 1985, where he has had a number of solo exhibitions since.

    PRESS RELEASE ANDREA ZITTEL Lay of My Land September 9 – December 11, 2011 Curator: Richard Julin The American artist Andrea Zittel was born in California in 1965. She is most closely associated with the remarkable utopian structures she calls living systems, which, in different ways, explore what we humans need for our survival. Andrea Zittel’s projects are deeply rooted in her own everyday life and her work delves into many different fields such as architecture, painting, photography, design, textiles, needlework and cooking. For over two decades her experiments have included dressing in the same home-sewn uniform for months on end, exploring restrictions in living space by living on an artificial island or living without measured time. At the beginning of the last decade she moved from New York back to California where she founded A–Z West, a space where she has created minimal households in which the everyday activities such as sleeping, eating, cooking and socializing become artistic actions. The fall exhibition at Magasin 3 will focus on ideas related to A–Z West. “We are very pleased that Andrea Zittel will be producing a completely new and large-scale piece for the exhibition at Magasin 3. The work Lay of My Land is a sculptural installation – a dramatic topographical figuration of the landscape that surrounds her site A–Z West in the Mojave desert” says Richard Julin, curator of the exhibition. An extensive new monograph on the artist accompanies the exhibition. It includes exclusive new photography taken in spring 2011. The two instances of obsolescence are old fashioned, pre-cinematic optical devices and the social model of the counterculture commune.     Sadie Coles HQ Andrea Zittel 25 March – 31 May 2014 Physical Matter Reality 62 Kingly St London W1 Tuesday – Saturday, 11 – 6pm Andrea Zittel’s 2014 exhibition at Sadie Coles HQ presents a substantial body of recent work encompassing sculptures, textiles and gouaches on paper. Zittel’s differently executed surfaces – woven, painted, or sculptural – evoke manifold types of physical field, including canvases, walls, floors, furnishings. They also offer metaphors for the multifarious ‘planes’ of human experience. These latest planar works reflect the artist’s enduring interest in the porous boundaries between distinct modes or genres – whether abstraction and figuration, or the decorative and the functional. Rather than seeking to deconstruct categories and taxonomies, Zittel adopts a strategy of careful syncretism: she asserts the importance of categories, pointing to their vital role in assigning psychological and social meaning to things. Like Venn diagrams, then, her works roll together diverse concepts (relating variously to art and life) while asserting the necessary divisions between them. Planar Pavilion revolves around a free-standing architectural structure composed of rectangular planes. Variegated in texture and colour, these surfaces function – like proverbial ‘blank canvases’ – as open-ended and amorphous sites. While interlocking physically, they also slip between myriad associations and resonances. As a three-dimensional matrix, the structure echoes both Constructivist sculpture and – in its juxtaposition of metal and wood – the sleek and simple finishes of post-war interior design. Mirroring the structure’s planar composition are seven hand-woven textiles, and one carpet suspended on the gallery’s walls. These are similarly cross-disciplinary – operating as paintings, sculptures, textiles and functional objects.
