The centerpiece of the History Center’s 2015 programming, INGENIOUS! San Diego’s Unfolding Innovation Story is a unique and immersive multimedia experience that will capture and convey the rich history of San Diego’s innovation leaders, the region’s multifaceted innovation sectors, and their contributions to the community, the nation, and the world. Centennial Railway Garden

Consisting of a model of Balboa Park in 1915, the Centennial Railway Garden exhibit will feature a spectacular use of new technology, sustainable-energy practices, and sculptural art. An innovative smart phone application will operate exhibit lighting, sounds, streetcars, and models of park structures. Exhibit Designer Robert Treat, whose experience includes 12 years as an animation director at Disney, and David Reed, the landscape architect responsible for many park projects, have created a “Miniature Balboa Park” that highlights the contributions of John D. Spreckels and the San Diego railways to the success of the Panama-California Exposition in 1915. San Diego Museum of Man

Border Crossing

A highly interactive, immersive exhibit, Border Crossing will explore what it’s like to immigrate to San Diego.

Changing Race

During the 1915 Exposition, the San Diego Museum of Man exhibited a series of busts depicting human racial groups. We will display the same busts again in 2015, this time within the context of a new exhibition that demonstrates how scientific and lay views of race have drastically changed over the past 100 years. Habitat Journey/Viaje por los habitats

This 8,000-square-foot permanent exhibition will allow visitors to explore the unique habitats of Southern California—from the coastal wetlands, through urban canyons into the chaparral, beyond to the high mountains, and down into the rainshadow desert.

Velázquez, Zurbarán, Murillo: The Golden Age of Art in Seville Curated by SDMA’s own John Marciari, this major international loan exhibition is the first exhibition in the United States to survey the paintings of Seville’s Golden Age (ca. 1600-1750).

Coney Island Organized by Yale University, this exhibition will explore the lure that Coney Island exerted over a period of 150 years on an extraordinary array of artists who viewed this iconic place as a microcosm of the American experience. Timkin Museum of Art

In celebration of Japanese manga art, JFG is hosting a manga art contest for three different age groups: children, teens, and adults.

1915 – 2015 History of the Japanese Friendship Garden Exhibit This yearlong exhibit will educate visitors about the history of the Japanese Friendship Garden, from the original tea house run by the Asakawa family to the completed 11.5-acre garden expansion that makes the Japanese Friendship Garden Society of San Diego one of the largest Japanese gardens in the United States. 35th-Annual Ethnic Food Fair The annual cultural extravaganza is celebrating its 35th year! Over 30 different cultures will present popular dishes, desserts, and beverages; dress in traditional costumes; display arts and crafts; and provide music, dance, and other performances throughout the day on the central lawn stage.

40th-Annual Small Image Show Spanish Village Art Center encourages artists in San Diego County to embrace the small! Gallery 21 in Spanish Village will host the juried Small Image Show, which is open to submission in all media.

Art in Bloom Award-winning floral designers and members of the San Diego Floral Association will create floral interpretations of artwork in Spanish Village. Visitors can stroll through Spanish Village amidst art and flowers and re-imagine art in bloom.

Cultural Landscape Lecture Series San Diego’s 1915 Panama-California Exposition was widely known as the Garden Fair. This lecture series will help us see, understand, and value the landscape of Balboa Park then and now and will trace our horticultural heritage from the Exposition. Flower Show Over one weekend during the centennial year, San Diego Floral Association will stage a major flower show to celebrate the spirit of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. In addition, San Diego Floral Association will contribute to the electronic mapping and description of Balboa Park trees, as well as enlarge San Diego’s urban forest with tree plantings.
