MADE IN AMERICACraft Icons of the 50 States This exhibition of traditional and contemporary craft icons highlights distinctive materials, excellence of workmanship, and their makers imaginations. VERNACULAR TO VISIONARYA Celebration of American Folk Art From whirly-gigs and weathervanes to quilts and coverlets, this exhibition celebrates American folk art in all its variety, from utilitarian to whimsical. Museum of Photographic Arts 7 Billion Others A ground breaking, multimedia exhibition, 7 Billion Others brings voices and compelling video portraits from over 6,000 individual interviews filmed in 84 countries by nearly 20 directors. The six-month presentation, the first one scheduled in the US, will allow visitors to identify what separates and unites us. Minor White: Cinema of Stills Organized by the Museum of Photographic Arts, this marks the first major retrospective of Whites career in more than two decades. Reuben H. Fleet Science Center Imaginate Imaginate, developed by Ontario Science Centre, inspires the spirit and practice of innovation through science. The Art of Science Learning, Phase 2 As part of The Art of Science Learnings Phase 2, sponsored by the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership, the Fleet will develop and host an interactive exhibit exploring innovation at the intersection of art, science, and learning. Energy Exhibition Inspired by the Balboa Park Centennial Celebrations themes of innovation and technology, this exhibition showcases energy and innovation in the San Diego region and focuses on advancing the public understanding of advances in energy production, distribution, and usage. Presented by Raytheon at the San Diego Air & Space Museum Ride a snowboard, control a Mars rover, design and play your own video gameexperience Balboa Parks most exhilarating exhibition and escape to an awesome world of Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Innovation. San Diego Automotive Museum Cars, Innovation, and Society Cars, Innovation, and Society celebrates the innovation of the automobile from 1915 to the present. These changes in technology influenced how we live and how we live influenced the technology. As this exhibition will demonstrate, our love affair with the car is enduring and powerful. San Diego History Center Splendor in the Scrub The definitive commemorative exhibition of the 1915 Exposition, the exhibition offers a multimedia enter history experience and will demonstrate the legacy of the 1915 Expo that put San Diego on the map. Dr. Seuss and the Art of Ingenuity This highly popular traveling Dr. Seuss exhibition will be supplemented with signature elements for the Balboa Park Centennial, emphasizing San Diego as the renowned authors home and Theodor Geisel as the worlds most celebrated childrens author and an innovation leader in his field. INGENIOUS! San Diegos Unfolding Innovation Story The centerpiece of the History Centers 2015 programming, INGENIOUS! San Diegos Unfolding Innovation Story is a unique and immersive multimedia experience that will capture and convey the rich history of San Diegos innovation leaders, the regions multifaceted innovation sectors, and their contributions to the community, the nation, and the world. San Diego Model Railroad Museum Centennial Railway Garden Consisting of a model of Balboa Park in 1915, the Centennial Railway Garden exhibit will feature a spectacular use of new technology, sustainable-energy practices, and sculptural art. An innovative smart phone application will operate exhibit lighting, sounds, streetcars, and models of park structures. Exhibit Designer Robert Treat, whose experience includes 12 years as an animation director at Disney, and David Reed, the landscape architect responsible for many park projects, have created a Miniature Balboa Park that highlights the contributions of John D. Spreckels and the San Diego railways to the success of the Panama-California Exposition in 1915. San Diego Museum of Man Border Crossing A highly interactive, immersive exhibit, Border Crossing will explore what its like to immigrate to San Diego. Changing Race During the 1915 Exposition, the San Diego Museum of Man exhibited a series of busts depicting human racial groups. We will display the same busts again in 2015, this time within the context of a new exhibition that demonstrates how scientific and lay views of race have drastically changed over the past 100 years. San Diego Natural History Museum Habitat Journey/Viaje por los habitats This 8,000-square-foot permanent exhibition will allow visitors to explore the unique habitats of Southern Californiafrom the coastal wetlands, through urban canyons into the chaparral, beyond to the high mountains, and down into the rainshadow desert. Special Collections Gallery For 2015, the Museums Research Library and reading room will be transformed into a gallery showcasing special collections through rotating exhibits. Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed A world-class traveling exhibition that presents what archaeologists know about the ancient and contemporary Maya. The San Diego Museum of Art The Art of Music The Art of Music, a major international loan exhibition, is a unique, thematic exploration of how music has been represented in the visual arts by various world cultures throughout the ages. Velázquez, Zurbarán, Murillo: The Golden Age of Art in Seville Curated by SDMAs own John Marciari, this major international loan exhibition is the first exhibition in the United States to survey the paintings of Sevilles Golden Age (ca. 1600-1750). Coney Island Organized by Yale University, this exhibition will explore the lure that Coney Island exerted over a period of 150 years on an extraordinary array of artists who viewed this iconic place as a microcosm of the American experience. Timkin Museum of Art Anthony Van Dyck exhibition This exhibition of paintings will focus on the Timken Museum of Arts portrait of Mary Villiers, a recently discovered masterpiece by the famous Flemish Baroque artist Anthony van Dyck, through an examination of the commission behind it and other portraits of her. Japanese Friendship Garden Masters of Japanese Culture The Japanese Friendship Garden is presenting a number of masters of Japanese arts and culture, including a Tea Ceremony, ikebana, and garden design, in a yearlong series of demonstrations and lectures. Manga Art In celebration of Japanese manga art, JFG is hosting a manga art contest for three different age groups: children, teens, and adults. 1915 2015 History of the Japanese Friendship Garden Exhibit This yearlong exhibit will educate visitors about the history of the Japanese Friendship Garden, from the original tea house run by the Asakawa family to the completed 11.5-acre garden expansion that makes the Japanese Friendship Garden Society of San Diego one of the largest Japanese gardens in the United States. House of Pacific Relations International Cottages 35th-Annual Ethnic Food Fair The annual cultural extravaganza is celebrating its 35th year! Over 30 different cultures will present popular dishes, desserts, and beverages; dress in traditional costumes; display arts and crafts; and provide music, dance, and other performances throughout the day on the central lawn stage. Lawn Programs From spring through fall 2015, the national member houses of the House of Pacific Relations will take turns hosting a weekly Sunday lawn program featuring music, dance, traditional costumes, arts, crafts, and ethnic foods. International Christmas Festival As part of Balboa Park December Nights, the House of Pacific Relations will host its annual International Christmas Festival, providing ethnic food and spirits and entertainment from around the world on the main stage. Spanish Village Art Center Creative Edge Spanish Village Art Center invites you to watch, learn, and play on the Creative Edge. Creative Edge is a series of monthly events in Spanish Village where you can watch plein-air painters in action, learn to throw pots on a potters wheel, team up with artists to build 15-foot sculptures with newspapers, and much more 40th-Annual Small Image Show Spanish Village Art Center encourages artists in San Diego County to embrace the small! Gallery 21 in Spanish Village will host the juried Small Image Show, which is open to submission in all media. Art in Bloom Award-winning floral designers and members of the San Diego Floral Association will create floral interpretations of artwork in Spanish Village. Visitors can stroll through Spanish Village amidst art and flowers and re-imagine art in bloom. Plein-Air Month Paint the Park Join plein-air artists as they Paint the Park during the month of September. San Diego Floral Association Cultural Landscape Lecture Series San Diegos 1915 Panama-California Exposition was widely known as the Garden Fair. This lecture series will help us see, understand, and value the landscape of Balboa Park then and now and will trace our horticultural heritage from the Exposition. Flower Show Over one weekend during the centennial year, San Diego Floral Association will stage a major flower show to celebrate the spirit of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. In addition, San Diego Floral Association will contribute to the electronic mapping and description of Balboa Park trees, as well as enlarge San Diegos urban forest with tree plantings.
