For each genus diagnostic characters, estimates of species numbers, recent literature and additional notes are included. Eight species of Ravensara Sonn. are transferred to Cryptocarya R. Razafindratsima Frugivores act as seed-dispersal agents in many ecosystems. Thus, understanding the roles and impacts of frugivore-mediated seed dispersal on plant spatial structure and plant-plant associations is important to understand the structure of plant communities. Frugivore-mediated seed dispersal is behaviorally driven, generating nonrandom patterns of seed dispersion; but, we know relatively little about how this might affect plant populations or communities. I examined how frugivores affected plants from the individual level to the population and community levels. I used modeling, trait-based and phylogenetic approaches combined with field observations and experiments, focusing on seed dispersal by three frugivorous lemur species in the biodiverse rainforest of Ranomafana National Park, Madagascar. An analysis of traits suggested that 84% of trees in Ranomafana are adapted for animal dispersal, of which 74% are dispersed by these three lemur species, indicating their role as generalist dispersers. The distribution of fruit and seed size of bird-dispersed species was nested within the wide spectrum of size distribution associated with lemur dispersal. -

A revision of the Malagasy endemic genus Aspidostemon Rohwer & Richter (Lauraceae) Henk VAN DER WERFF Missouri Botanical Garden, P.O. Adansonia, sér. 3, 28 (1) : 7-44. ABSTRACT A revision is presented of the genus Aspidostemon, endemic to Madagascar. Th e genus is characterized by its opposite leaves, fl owers with three or six two-locular stamens and a fruit which is completely enclosed in the enlarged hypanthium with KEY WORDS persistent fl oral parts attached to the top of the fruit. Th e genus was described Lauraceae, by Rohwer & Richter in 1987; they recognized 11 species. A synopsis of the genus Beilschmiedia (Lauraceae) in Madagascar Henk van der WERFF Missouri Botanical Garden, P.O. Box 299, St. Louis, Missouri 63166-0299, U.S.A. [email protected] ABSTRACT A review of the species of Beilschmiedia occurring in Madagascar is presented. Nine species are recognized, of which two, B. pedicellata van der Werff and KEY WORDS B. rugosa van der Werff, are described as new. Two previously described Beilschmiedia, species are treated as imperfectly known. Several collections with dimerous Potameia, Lauraceae, flowers typical of the related genus Potameia are accepted as belonging in Madagascar. Beilschmiedia. Dahlgrenodendron from South Africa is sister to Aspidostemon from Madagascar. Triadodaphne inaequitepala is nested within Endiandra (both from Australasia), and Yasunia from South America is nested among South American Beilschmiedia species. Sinopora is a member of the Beilschmiedia clade, but its precise position is still uncertain. Among large genera of the group, Cryptocarya is clearly monophyletic, and Endiandra appears to be as well, if T. inaequitepala is included. Beilschmiedia is paraphyletic with respect to (at least) Potameia and Yasunia. Most well- supported clades within genera are geographically homogeneous, except a clade including the Chilean Cryptocarya alba and two New Caledonian species. -
