American Saddlebred DAILY ASHA Member of the Day Bob Ruxer Our final ASHA Member Of The Day for 2016 got his inspiration from the one and only Roy Rogers, whom he saw perform right here in Freedom Hall. A native of Jasper, IN, our honoree was able to cultivate his dreams because his uncle Alvin and aunt Hilda went to a farm auction where a Saddlebred mare was tied up to a manure spreader waiting to be sold. When it came time, Alvin started the bidding on her, which was going back and forth. Little did he know it was Hilda bidding against him on the other side. The family backed one car out of their two-car garage and bedded it with straw for their new mare, Starlane Rose. They then built a little block barn and eventually a show horse and breeding facility that would change the course of history for the American Saddlebred. The young man became a noted trainer, breeder, salesman, author They bought a Leatherwood King daughter named Judy O’Lee and industry leader, serving both the ASHA and UPHA in many who would become their foundation broodmare, producing Melody ways. He was instrumental in convincing his peers to adopt the O’Lee. They also purchased the Three-Gaited World’s Grand three-judge Majority Opinion System. The family was also played Champion Valley View Supreme and when bred to Melody O’Lee a great role in the establishment of the American Saddlebred she produced a son who turned out to be the legendary, Supreme Museum where a statue of the great Supreme Sultan still greets Sultan. The family would stand some of the breed’s greats. In visitors at the entrance. addition to Valley View Supreme and Supreme Sultan, Mr. Magic Man, Talent Town and Sultan’s Royalty resided at Ruxer Farms In 1985, he married Laura, a young lady whom he had met at the over the years. St. Louis Horse Show. They would have a daughter, Chelsea and as a family they shared their love of the American Saddlebred. Our honoree first started working for his uncle’s car dealership and A serious medical issue for our honoree changed their focus but then went to the University of Kentucky taking pre-med courses their love of the horse and their many friends in the business but that wasn’t for him. Some of his buddies – Jimmy Robertson, has never waivered. We are pleased to welcome our great friend Johnny Conatser and Nick McGowin - all went into horse training and an inspiration to many back to Freedom Hall on this and he decided that was for him as well. Marty Mueller would be championship night where many products of his family’s breeding his first teacher. program have made history. Need a golf car during the World Championship Horse Show? • 1 Consider the Development of Imagery in the Superhero Film. Are
Consider the development of imagery in the superhero film. Are its expressive techniques more relevant to traditions of comics or cinema? Illustrate your answer with examples. From a level of camp that was attributed to early1 television and made-for-television film adaptations of superhero comics, to the realism and gritty German expressionist lens that coloured the likes of Superman (Richard Donner, 1978) and Batman (Tim Burton, 1989) respectively (Morton, 2016), the development of imagery in the superhero film has often teetered between the expressive techniques of cinema, and those of comics. According to Bukatman (2011: 118), today “the superhero film has displaced the superhero comic in the world of mass culture.” With this in mind, it is expedient to assess which medium’s expressive techniques the twenty-first century is more relevant to. Through the analysis of three films, this essay attempts to do exactly that. Before taking on this endeavour, however, it is important to establish what the yardstick of each medium’s expressive techniques is for this essay. Cinematic expressive techniques will be taken as the mise-en-scène2, soundtrack/score, the use of the star/celebrity, and visual effects. While the expressive techniques of comics will be taken as the use of panels, the elements within panels3, gutters, page-turns, and colour. The following three films will be analysed: Watchmen (Zack Snyder, 2009), a film that is said to be “very faithful” (Crocker, 2009) to the original comic book, but still appears “something less than the sum of its parts” (Bukatman, 2011:118); Thor: Ragnarok (Taika Waititi, 2017), the third instalment of the ‘Thor’ series which is most lauded for its evident “Jack Kirby influence” (Waititi, quoted in Blair, 2017); and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Ramsey, Rothman & Persichetti, 2018), which of the three chosen films is arguably the most relevant to the expressive techniques of comics, given its closeness to the medium as an animated film.

ABSTRACT SHAEFFER, MATHEW TODD. With Great Power and Great Responsibility: The Representation of America's Social Anxieties and Historical Events in The Amazing Spider- Man, 1962-1979. (Under the direction of committee Dr. David Zonderman). This thesis examines The Amazing Spider-Man comic series as a means to explore historical events and social anxieties during the 1960s and 1970s. Recently, superheroes have reclaimed a prominent place in American culture as superhero films are surging in popularity. Using The Amazing Spider-Man, I hope to highlight how superhero comic books are a valuable source for American cultural history and warrant serious scholarly research. To conduct my research, I looked at the scholarship on superhero comics, which has expanded greatly over the last few years, and conducted a close examination of Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962), which first introduces Spider-Man, and nearly 200 issues of The Amazing Spider-Man published from 1963 until 1979. I found that The Amazing Spider-Man comic series offers insight into American society and American values during the time period. I examine how The Amazing Spider-Man advocates the responsible use of science during the new Nuclear Age while also reflecting the dangers of new and unconstrained science. I study how the main character, Peter Parker, deals with social acceptance, general social anxieties, and finding his place in the world. I look at how the hero struggles with Cold War tensions, losing loved ones, seeing friends shipped off to war, social unrest, civil rights issues, student protests, political corruption, and much more. Finally, I look at how the perception of gender changes during the 1960s and 1970s by examining the evolution of both male and female gender values portrayed in the comic and how those values evolve over time.

SUPERHEROES & STEREOTYPES: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF RACE, GENDER, AND SOCIAL ISSUES WITHIN COMIC BOOK MATERIAL Gabriel Arnoldo Cruz A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 2018 Committee: Alberto González, Advisor Eric Worch Graduate Faculty Representative Joshua Atkinson Frederick Busselle Christina Knopf © 2018 Gabriel Arnoldo Cruz All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Alberto González, Advisor The popularity of modern comic books has fluctuated since their creation and mass production in the early 20th century, experiencing periods of growth as well as decline. While commercial success is not always consistent from one decade to the next it is clear that the medium has been and will continue to be a cultural staple in the society of the United States. I have selected this type of popular culture for analysis precisely because of the longevity of the medium and the recent commercial success of film and television adaptations of comic book material. In this project I apply a Critical lens to selected comic book materials and apply Critical theories related to race, class, and gender in order to understand how the materials function as vehicles for ideological messages. For the project I selected five Marvel comic book characters and examined materials featuring those characters in the form of comic books, film, and television adaptations. The selected characters are Steve Rogers/Captain America, Luke Cage, Miles Morales/Spider-Man, Jean Grey, and Raven Darkholme/Mystique. Methodologically I interrogated the selected texts through the application of visual and narrative rhetorical criticism.
