with Christine Bender-Pototzki Enjoying sunshine without harming your skin After another dull Irish winter the sun is eventually starting to peep out again. It’s only natural that we all want to spend a lot of time outside to soak up the rays of light and warm temperature. Joyce Russell really knows about growing food in a polytunnel, she has had hers for 18 years and grows vegetables just about the whole year round. She showed us slides of how she operates her tunnel and gave us sound advice on feeding, watering, ventilation, etc. A very inspiring lady who has also written an excellent book on the subject called The Polytunnel Book - Fruit and Vegetables All Year Round. We are now entering a busy season in the garden and will not be meeting again until Thursday 6th September when our own Damien O'Flynn will be sharing with us his knowledge and expertise on hedging. Should a day trip be arranged during July or August, all members will be contacted by phone. Until we meet again, happy growing/picking, don't work too hard.... leave time to smell the roses!

On Wednesday 4th July a protest will be organized and I would strongly urge teachers, parents and students from all over Ireland to travel to Dublin, if at all possible, to protest against these Government cuts and to show the Government and its supporting members that there is total opposition to such moves. Our small schools are the back bone of the fabric of our society and we must do everything that we can to ensure that they are retained. Mr. Remy Benoit RIP It was with great sadness that the people of Kenmare heard of the death of Mr. Remy Benoit after a bravely fought illness. Remy and his wife Natalie came to Kenmare in the mid-1980’s and opened a successful business at the top of the town. Shortly after that they bought what was then Kenmare Salmon from Kevin Cooper and, in conjunction with their manager Sean Jones, have since run a highly successful company giving great employment locally.Remy will be sadly missed by all his friends and indeed all his employees both past and present. They will remember him for being generous, fair and kind. On my own behalf, and on behalf of the people of this region which benefited greatly by Remy and Natalie coming to Kenmare all those years ago, I want to express my sincerest sympathies to Natalie, their sons Cyprian and Basil and their extended families. May he rest in peace. Johnny Healy-Rae MCC The following are issues that I am dealing with in the Kenmare/Kilgarvan area I'm glad as a result of a meeting with the South Kerry Partnership that, with their assistance, a bus driver will be appointed to the Black Valley Community Council to help them to maintain their bus service from Kenmare to the Black Valley school. I would like to thank the South Kerry Partnership and I'm glad to have been involved in helping with this. The lights in Scarteen Park should be fixed by now and I have also requested that the lights out the Kilgarvan Road towards the Old Church be repaired immediately. Hopefully we won't go through the same fiasco as the lights out the Templenoe Road. I would like to wish the best of luck to the Tidy Towns in this year’s competition and to thank the volunteers for the tremendous work they have put in. I allocated 8000to out of my councillor’s allocation to ensure that much needed resurfacing work will be carried out on Templenoe Road, Kilgarvan Village and the Bog Road . This work is due to be done over the next few months.
