27 LESSON 4: LESSON 4: LESSON 4: ACRONYMS AC RULES & CONCEPTS: RONY When using an acronym check the listener’s face M S to see if they recognize it before continuing. If their eyebrows raise or show a quizzical look then you need to expand the acronym and explain what it means. First spell the acronym, then expand it and then spell it one more time. When talking to a group you should assume that at least one person is not familiar with the acronym so go ahead and expand it right away. In either case after you expand the acronym you may continue to use the acronym without further explanation. Some geographic regions might develop their own acronyms that are not widely used.
