SFMTA reduced service on many transit lines during the shelter-in-place order, however, regular vital routes such as the F, 6, 18, 21, 23, 31, 35, 36, 52, and 53 have remained completely out of service. SFMTA suspended their light rail system, which has provided limited bus substitutions for light rail routes including N Judah, L/K Taraval Ingleside, and M Oceanview. While some of these lines served student commuters, they were relied upon by many seniors and other individuals who need to access essential services such as child care, work, grocery store, and medical appointments. SFMTA launched the Essential Trip Card (ETC) program for seniors in order to access subsided taxi rides, but it is limited and is still cost-prohibitive for residents living on fixed incomes. “Frankly – The SFMTA needs to recognize that reinstating these lines is an equity issue. Transit is an essential service and we cannot possibly best serve all neighborhoods in San Francisco if we are going to purely look at ridership levels,” said the Chair of the Land Use and Transportation Committee, Supervisor Myrna Melgar.

    The Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club Questionnaire for November 2020 Dear Candidates and Ballot Measure Representatives, Congratulations on declaring your candidacy for office or your preferred ballot measure position. The Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club invites you to get to know us a little better as we plan our endorsements for the November 2020 election. Your participation in our Club’s questionnaire will allow our Membership to better understand who you are, what you stand for, and what you plan to accomplish if you are elected to office or your ballot position is successful. There are three parts to our questionnaire, plus additional questions for individual offices: Part 1 is a series of short-answer questions, with a 150-word limit on answers. Part 2 is a series of Yes or No questions covering a broad set of issues. Part 3 covers whom you have endorsed for office currently and in the past. (Representatives of ballot measure positions only need to answer questions pertaining to ballot measures.) While we applaud and support the intent to expand equitable access to the vaccine, the newly announced vaccine equity metric leaves behind many underserved communities and vulnerable individuals in the Bay Area that have been hardest- hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. This formula must be changed to adequately supply vaccines to those in our state that need it the most. The current metric allocates 40 percent of available doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to 8 million California residents for the communities in the lowest quartile of the “Healthy Places Index” which translates to 446 zip codes across our state. Even though the Bay Area accounts for 20 percent of the population of California, only 2 percent of Bay Area residents fall under the affected zip codes determined through this newly established vaccine metric. Only 10 zip codes in the Bay Area are prioritized through this formula, while 79 zip codes in Los Angeles County and 39 zip codes in San Bernardino County have been identified. Most prioritized zip codes fall in Southern California while most counties in the Bay Area - Santa Clara, San Mateo, Marin, Sonoma and Napa – have no zip codes prioritized through this formula and only 4% of San Francisco residents, 3% of Contra Costa County residents and 7% of Alameda County residents fall in those zip codes that are prioritized.
