MYNAH BIRDS By Nick Warburton Ambitious, charismatic and dripping in raw talent, Ricky James Matthews (b. James Ambrose Johnson, 1 February 1948, Buffalo, NY, US; d. 6 August 2004) didn’t take long to capitalise on his sharp looks, soulful voice and US navy uniform after he landed in Toronto in August 1964. Within weeks of his arrival, the young singer found himself fronting the aptly titled Sailorboys, a raucous R&B outfit that subsequently evolved into the Mynah Birds. Unbeknown to his musical cohorts, however, Matthews was a wanted man by the US authorities. His failure to report for active duty with the USS Enterprise and a fear of arrest had prompted the young singer to flee across the border. Interestingly, it was not Matthews’ first brush with the authorities, for as a teenager he had been arrested on several occasions for stealing cars. Indeed, throughout his career Matthews would have numerous run-ins with the law, culminating in a prison sentence in the mid- 1990s. While Matthews later enjoyed a string of hits for Motown Records in the late 1970s/early 1980s as funk star Rick James, little is known about his early life, particularly his involvement in the Toronto rock scene during the 1960s. And perhaps it would have remained that way had it not been for the fact that the Mynah Birds also briefly included Canadian rock legend, Neil Young (b. 12 November 1945, Toronto, Canada). Even so, it would be a gross oversight to view the group as merely a footnote to Rick James and Neil Young’s careers. -

They play nothing but the hits, and after a day of lectures, breakout sessions, discussions, and debates, this is exactly what conference-goers are craving. Speech Topics Nick St.Nicholas Entertainment Nick St.Nicholas' music career began in Toronto when he first formed a band Celebrity called the Mynah Birds, a group of unknowns that would begin the careers of the king of funk, Rick James, and Neil Young of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. One year later he would assemble another band called the Sparrow. Using an unknown lead singer, John Kay, as their front man, and little money in their pockets, Nick drove the band from Toronto to the Sunset Strip in search of a record deal. Once in Hollywood, the Sparrow would soon change their name to Steppenwolf and a film that would become an instant classic, Easy Rider, would launch their biker anthem, "Born To Be Wild" into rock and roll history. Nick toured and recorded on many of their gold and platinum albums including Early Steppenwolf, Steppenwolf Live; At Your Birthday Party; and Monster. Some years later, he began his quest to form another band that would appeal to an entire generation. But this time it would not be a group of unknowns, he would instead seek to combine the talents of several of the most prominent musicians, singers and songwriters whose work represented a number of smash, popular chart-topping hits from the greatest bands in the world. -

BIOGRAPHY Boogie Wonder Band was created in 1996 from Boogie Cindy and her group’s passion for disco music from the Seventies and Eighties. Boogie Wonder Band immediately became a reference for that era of disco music to the world. By 1997, with the release of the album “Keep Disco Alive” and the release the following year of “Kings of Discoland”, the Band’s show was already distinguished by its blazing style, its multicoloured costumes and its contagious energy. It must be said that with 10 singers/musicians on stage and their manager Michael Weisinger on the scene, this 11 member group never leaves anything to chance. Having collaborated on the albums of Joe Cocker, Paula Abdul, Kool and the Gang, The Fugees and several others as a sound engineer, Michael Weisinger used his expertise to give the group a “vintage” sound, very close to the original songs. It is partly this sound which still to this day distinguishes Boogie Wonder Band from the other groups. During the years that followed, the group performed at several major events: Formula One Grand Prix (Monaco, Indianapolis and Montreal), PGA tournaments, Grey Cup and many more. Stars like Celine Dion and Donald Trump recognized their talent and called upon the band to entertain at their own parties. They have also performed for some of the largest companies in the world, such as Cirque du Soleil, Mc Donald's, IBM, Walt Disney, Bombardier, General Electric, Club Med and many others. Because of their growing popularity, Boogie Wonder Band quickly became the darling of American and Asian casinos. -

The Blues/Funk Futurism of Roger Troutman 119 The Blues/Funk Futurism of Roger Troutman Scot Brown More than a decade after his tragic death, the sonic innovations of Roger Troutman—known simply as Roger and leader of the group called Zapp— continue to influence pop music. Contemporary artists such as Kanye, Akon, and T-Pain owe a tremendous debt to Roger’s brand of electronic funk. Though reigning supreme during the 1980s, his sound built on the commingling of technology and futuristic representations in film and television decades earlier. Beyond television and movie screens, African American musical artists cre- ated accessible avenues for futuristic representation through musical art. Lyr- ics, concepts, costumes, and album cover art, from a range of musical styles, evoked futuristic imagery set in outer space or imaginary places to frame com- mentaries on love, human possibility, politics, and racial conflict. Musical il- lustrations of the future were often textured by new technologies of sound used in scores for postwar science fiction film and television. Tonal companions to the American Aquarian age were wrought with technological enthusiasm and anxieties—most notably expressed in numerous guitar effects (popularized by Jimi Hendrix) and the synthesizer, which, in keeping with its namesake, created analogues to traditional sounds and synthesized altogether new ones. Roger Troutman is most known for expanding the range and melodic possi- bilities of the talk box or voice box—a device that allows an artist to fuse vocal patterns with the sound emitted by electronic instruments and mimic speech. west coast music JB Project Please find attached the 'JB Project' song list for your review. SPECIAL DANCES: Please note that we will need to have your special dance requests, (i.e. First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance, etc) FOUR WEEKS prior to your event so that we can confirm that the band will be able to perform the song(s) and so that we have time to locate sheet music and audio. In cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is needed, this gives us time to properly prepare the music. The JB Project song list is divided into two categories: HIGH ROTATION SONGS & LOW ROTATION SONGS. Requests for LOW ROTATION SONGS (not performed regularly) need to be made FOUR WEEKS in advance to give the band time to review. Clients are not obligated to send in a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and avoided. If you desire the highest degree of control (allowing the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we would ask for a minimum 80 requests.
