OHIO HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION

Dear OHSBCA Members, Welcome to the 67th annual OHSBCA State Clinic, January 18th, 19th and 20th of 2018. You are a member of the 2nd largest coaches associations in the United States. Many high school coaches and college speakers have said that this is one of the best clinics in the nation. I am hoping that you are able to take something from this year’s clinic and go back to your school to make the young men in your program better this coming year and for future players as well. With my involvement on this board for the past 5 years, I have seen the giant steps forward the association has made. It is my honor to give back as Director of the 2018 State Clinic. This venue at the Hyatt Regency and Columbus Convention Center is just one example of what a first class operation we all are here to witness. If there is anything that any of our 24 board members or the Hyatt personnel can do to make your experience more enjoyable, please let us know. Your board is committed to making this a most enjoyable and rewarding experience, and represents you throughout the entire year. We have the opportunity to recognize and honor three (3) of our own with their induction into our OHSBCA Hall of Fame this weekend: I truly hope that you take the opportunity to attend our banquet on Friday noon in the Ballroom to honor these three great men who have given so much to their schools, community and our association. There are also many other awards given to your peers and scholarships to the children of our members; you should not miss this banquet. I have taken great pride in putting together a great lineup of clinic speakers who have a variety of messages that will help you to get back into “baseball mode” as we get closer to our seasons approaching. We continue to learn and seek out information and I feel that this year’s speakers will truly help all of us grow our players and build a stronger program. The list of speakers for this year include: Turtle Thomas – Texas Rangers Dan Bertolini – Youngstown State University Greg Beals – The Ohio State University Brad Myers – Nashville HS (TN) Cory Mee – University of Toledo Gene Stechschulte – Ohio Northern Univ. Kyle Hallock – Malone University Kyle Sprague – University of Cincinnati Tim Belcher – Keith Veale – Mount Vernon Nazarene Jim Puhalla – Natural Grass Gary Gilmore – Coastal Carolina University Kris Knapp – Ontario HS, Trainer Gary Reinl – Marc Pro Kyle Hallock – Malone University Butch Chaffin – Tennessee HS Paul Reddick – Yogi Berra Baseball Camps Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the entire OHSBCA Board of Directors for their dedication and hard work to this organization. My sincere gratitude goes to the gentlemen who have been on the Executive Board with me the past few years: Donnie Schone, Tom Neubert, Craig Kyle, John Bakalar, Trevor Thomas, Kevin Yoder, Dave Hall, Dave Barrow, Scott Manahan, Ray Benjamin, Curt Karpinski, Dave Burkett, Jeff Mielcarek, and Frank Gamble. A special thanks goes to my terrific fiancé Rebecca, my parents Bob and Jane Lavengood and my three wonderful children, Carson (14), Annie (10) and Luke (7) for always being so supportive of my coaching life.

Welcome from OHSBCA President, Tom Neubert Welcome to the 2018 Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association Coaches Clinic. It is truly an honor to serve as President of one of the top baseball coaches associations in the country. While being involved with this organization, I have increased my knowledge of the game of baseball as well as met so many new friends. The amazing coaches that I have had a chance to meet and listen to have helped me grow as a person and a coach. The best part of this journey has been meeting such great friends associated with the game of baseball. I would never have had this opportunity without the help of my two friends Scott Manahan (Bishop Watterson) and Ray Benjamin (St. Charles) who pushed me to get involved. This year Rob Lavengood has done a fantastic job putting together your clinic and Craig Kyle has worked hard lining up vendors for the exhibit hall. Special thank you to all of our Executive Board and the district reps for not only your hard work, but for your professionalism. The Board has made my time as president go very smoothly. Please, when you get a chance, thank them for their dedication and work put in throughout the entire year. Lastly, I want to thank our host, The Hyatt Regency, and all of our sponsors who make it possible for us to put on a first-class clinic. Please enjoy the weekend; I hope you continue learning about this great game of baseball and use your increased knowledge within your programs to keep Ohio high school baseball great! Good luck to all of you this upcoming spring.

s 11 s 2018 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE Mike Wiss – Minster High School

Mike Wiss graduated from Minster High School in 1989 and went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education at the University of Dayton in 1994. He later earned his Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from the University of Dayton in 1998. Coach Wiss began his coaching career after accepting a teaching position at Minster Schools in 1994. He began teaching 5th/6th Social Studies and after one (1) year moved to 7th/8th Grade Social Studies, the position he still holds today. The first year of teaching proved very busy as he also accepted coaching positions in football, basketball and baseball. His football tenure lasted 22 years at JH/HS levels (1994-2015), basketball for 3 years of freshman boys (1994-96) and 21 years with HS girls (1997-present) as well as 24 years of varsity baseball (1995-present). The spring of 2018 marks Coach Wiss’s 24th season at the helm of Minster Baseball, where he has amassed a record of 409-188. His teams have won 18 sectional titles and 7 district titles (along with 3 runners-up). The Wildcats have made 7 trips to the regional tournament (4 titles, 1 runner-up), under his leadership, and won 3 state titles (2011, ’12, ’17, along with 1 runner-up in 2003). Wiss’s teams have claimed 1 State Poll Championships (2007), 1 runner-up (2013) and have finished in the Top Ten in the State Coaches Poll a total of 5 times. He has 3 conference championships (Midwest Athletic Conference) and has reached the twenty victory plateau 7 times. He has coached 23 All-Ohio Players (11 of which earned First Team Honors) and has coached 19 players who have gone on to play in college. Mike was voted Div. IV Coach of the Year in 2007. He has been a member of the OHSBCA now for 24 years and has been a state poll voter for 10 years. Mike also served as assistant coach for St. Marys American Legion Post 323 for 6 years (1988-93) with record of 180-92 and earning 5 trips the American Legion State Tournament and head coach of Post 323 for 4 years (1994-97) with a record of 124-49 and 2 State Legion tournaments. Lastly, Coach Wiss attributes much of the program’s success to his assistant coaches. The time, dedication and diligence devoted to Minster Baseball by the many gentlemen that choose to help make Minster Baseball important is awesome. Baseball is now, as we all are aware, a year-round commitment in many ways. Having those individuals that are willing to help and that you, as the head coach, are comfortable with empowering them to teach and help lead your program, is huge. As our motto states each year -- “TEAM – With Your Heart” -- it’s a blessing to have men that love the game to work with each day. Mike has been married to his wife, Kelly, for 18 years. Kelly teaches 4th grade Language Arts also at Minster Schools. They have 4 children (Madison (16), Meghan (14), Andrew (10), Alli (3). CONGRATS COACH

How To Win More Games

My old boss Yogi Berra said, “The future ain’t what it used to be”.

In this new world of baseball, his words could not be truer. The game we played and the game our fathers played was pretty similar. The game our kids are playing today is vastly different. Not only is the game different, our players use a communication system that we’ll never fully comprehend. We talked, played and interacted. They text, snap and tweet. In this presentation, I’ll present to you a way to connect with your players, bond your team and win more games.

CENTRAL - Todd Wilcox (Marysville High School) Todd is entering his 14th year with the Marysville Baseball Program. During his tenure as pitching coach, the staff achieved a team record 1.30 in 2017. Along with developing and managing the pitching staff, Todd has been the Head of Grounds. During his tenure in this role, the baseball complex at Marysville was awarded Regional Field of the Year in 2016. Along with his baseball coaching duties, Todd has served as a volunteer for the softball and football programs for the previous three years. Outside of his passion for coaching, Todd also works as a volunteer with the medical and training staff at Marysville High School.

EAST - Justin Banks (Steubenville High School) Justin’s hard work, dedication and love for the game of baseball has helped Steubenville Big Red compile a 208-66 record over a 10 year span. His relentless work as infield and hitting coach has also led Big Red to back to back State Final 4 appearances. Steubenville High School and Big Red baseball are very fortunate to have Justin on their coaching staff.

NORTHEAST - Tom Hogan (John Hay High School) Coach Hogan has been part of starting two different baseball programs while teaching at Rhodes High School. After transitioning to John Hay High School as an assistant coach, his passion for baseball continued. The John Hay baseball program has excelled under his leadership while guiding them to multiple playoff appearances and, most recently, John Hay’s first ever appearance in the city championship. Coach Hogan assists with future scheduling and ordering equipment. He has made it possible to ensure that there are enough uniforms and equipment for several years after he exits the program.

NORTHWEST - Chris Jackson (Norwalk High School) B.S. Technology Education, Bowling Green State University M. Ed. Classroom Technology, Bowling Green State University 1996 graduate of Norwalk High School 15th year at Norwalk High School teaching Industrial Education, Advanced Woodworking, Makerspace and Technology Daughters Noelle (15) Josilyn (6) and Elise (3) 15 years coaching baseball with Wes Douglas in the Norwalk Trucker programHead Girls Golf Coach

SOUTHEAST - Shane Kemper (Wheelersburg High School) Shane has been a member of the Wheelersburg coaching staff for the past seven years. From day one, his impact in our program has been felt as well make a final four appearance in 2011 and then followed it with back to back State Championships in 2012 and 2013. The aspect that Shane brings to our program that makes him so valuable is his ability to build rapport with our young men. Our players gravitate to his personality and his ability to communicate the messages that we deem to be important. Shane is able to manage his family and work schedule as a shift worker and still finds time to five back to the student-athletes in our program despite minimal sleep. These sacrifices do not go unnoticed and his passion for our program is felt 365 day a year.

SOUTHWEST - Tim Adams (Lakota West High School) Tim Adams plays a huge role in our program as the pitching coach. He does a great job of teaching the mechanics of pitching as well as the mental aspect. He is patient yet demanding, and helps the pitchers develop a high level of confidence. Tim has developed position players into effective pitchers and helped pitchers with less talent overachieve. Tim brings a high level of experience, wisdom and stability to our coaching staff.

One I wish every coach could experience in their career. I was truly blessed and honored to have the opportunity to coach such a fine group of young men. These young men were aware of the expectations that had been placed upon them, from a preseason article in the local paper talking about their window closing, to everyone in the community telling them this was their year. Such expectations could have derailed some teams but from day one of conditioning this team didn’t just wear words like integrity, attitude, selflessness, accountability, never quit, on t-shirts: they put into practice every day! The outcome of one game would not change what this team had accomplished; they were champions in my eyes! But like our motto said “Why not us” and #finishit and they did! I would like to thank them for the way they represented their community, their school, their parents, coaches and certainly themselves! To many, the word TEAM means the traditional Together Everyone Achieves More. We at Minster have changed that a little – ‘Together Excellence, Apart Mediocrity’. We preach the importance of the TEAM concept, being accountable for your actions (to self, team, community) and being dedicated to baseball for ‘2 hours a day’. And that 2 hours needs to be an enjoyable 2 hours where each of us gets better at our craft and develops a true love for the game. It takes talent and some good fortune along the way to be successful in this ‘crazy’ game. It takes some upperclassmen to accept the talents of some younger players into being a part of the program. It takes a group of young men to accept each other as individuals as well as good friends and teammates. It takes parents, players and coaches working together to raise a child and a team. Minster has been very fortunate in accomplishing these ideals. Our three (3) state baseball titles are part of our schools 31 state titles. We take pride in our school, community and athletics. I realize awards like this end up in the head coach’s hands, but honestly, and we all know this, we don’t succeed without good people working with us every day. Some very special gentlemen, good friends, great coaches have been very integral parts of this award as well. From those that have helped during the season to those that help organize our summer ACME program, Minster has been blessed. We have honestly had such great consistency in coaching. The same people are at practice and games year in and year out. It is such an important part of learning the game when such continuity in coaching is present. This award goes to these guys as well.

OUTFIELD PLAY

THE UNGLORIFIED POSITION

Fly Ball

1. Glove foot forward leads to 3 Step vs 4 or 5 Step 2. Elbow in (thumb to pinky)

Ground Ball

1. Throwing foot forward leads to 4 Step vs 5 Step 2. Don’t hop…be efficient

BE ON TIME & EFFICIENT MOVEMENTS/ANGLES

Foundation for being an ELITE defender

If you are late – you will catch less baseballs, most likely will not play and your pitchers will not be happy If you are on time – you will steal away hits, most likely play more and your pitchers will be happy *Very similar to hitting For every wasted movement, the runner(s) are gaining 1-2 steps therefor it is imperative that we are efficient with our movements/angles

Most of these drills are GB/FB interchangeable. These are done without a baseball first. No baseball allows them to solely let their body take over. Most of these can be done side by side to be efficient and to maximize time. You can also go one at a time so players visually learn and be a better teammate by coaching each other (initiates communicating).

1. Pre-Steps – line up side to side, hands at waist vs out front…1, sit or 1,2, sit 2. Drop Step Angle Gap – NO wasted/negative movement, catch on the run 3. Drop Step Angle Gap – swivel your hips to work through the baseball 4. Drop Step Straight Back – can mix in putting head down 5. Snake – on the foul line, yard line on football field 6. Drop Step Straight Back – head snap 7. Line Drive Side to Side - *go one at a time and alternate or point the direction (like a LB coach) 8. Line Drive Forward Angled – no wasted steps 9. 4 Corners (10-15 yds) – Puts all the movements together, make sure they mimic the movement of catching the baseball\

*If they don’t do it correctly without a baseball, they won’t do it correctly with a baseball…stress the details!

PLAY FAST

We are the last line of defense, and by playing fast we will have the opportunity to steal away hits when other outfielders pull up

1. Bounce Drill – focus on swiveling hips, gaining momentum while ball is still in air 2. Around The World – quick twitch, proper angles, be athletic 3. 2 Ball – quick twitch, proper angles, competition, body takes over 4. Stopwatch – this provides something for them to achieve, creates competition, all while working as fast as they can 5. Groundball Progression R @ 1B (keep DP in order, understand the angle, your arm strength, speed of runner)

s 50 s 1. Ball at you throw to 3B with long hop 2. Ball towards 3B, throw to 3B with long hop 3. Ball away from 3B, throw to 2B with long hop, keep double play in order 4. Ball bobbled, throw to 2B with long hop, keep double play in order 5. Wall ball, throw to double cut and don’t be afraid to miss high

THROW A CATCHABLE BASEBALL

This starts in warmups. Practice with a purpose, incorporate movements/situations while warming up:

1. Groundball 2. Fly ball with swiveling hips 3. Spin move 4. Ball on ground 5. Off the wall

Hat Drill – place your hat (DO NOT leave sunglasses) about 10-12 yds in front of you. This provides a long hop for the infielders which makes it easy to handle and it gives us room for error (if we overthrow the hat it’s still at the bag, if we aim for the bag, an over throw goes into the stands). This is done daily.

Any drill can be incorporated with throwing, just make sure they know the throwing is still a priority (their training will just take over without even thinking about it)

INDOOR/OUTDOOR TENNIS BALL DRIKLLS

W drill- Four cones set up in the shape of a W. Must Catch every ball Snake drill- 6 Cones in the shape of a Snake In out communication Drill- two throwers- make players come in and go back and communicate Out in Communication Drill 3-5-7 Ball

BE FEARLESS & HAVE FUN

Knee Diving – prefer diving over sliding as sliding changes eye level abruptly. If you have a pole vault mat or any form of padding that can be utilized, use it!

Hero Drill – (no diving in drills, fungo) wherever the ball is going to hit the ground try to get as close to that spot as possible, don’t pull up

Fly Ball Sequence – this forces the group to stay engaged, communicate and have some fun

1. Facing AWAY from fungo hitter 2. On the ground, facing fungo hitter 3. On the ground, glove off, facing fungo hitter 4. On the ground, glove off, facing AWAY from the fungo hitter • Think DIFFERENTLY – think outside the box • Don’t stay on the same drill for too long or you will lose their focus • Mix different drills or overall focus daily • Don’t just hit popups for 30 minutes • HAVE FUN – create competition, let them play as though they are kids in the back yard playing stickball
