Cougar 1 Baseball UNIVERSITY INFORMATION

Founded in 1964 by the Church of the Nazarene, Mount Vernon Nazarene University held its first classes in October of 1968 on the former Lakeholm farm in Mount Vernon, Ohio. The land was purchased by public subscription and donated to the university. With an enrollment of around 2,600 students, MVNU is the official university of the East Central Educational Region of the Church of the Nazarene. The primary responsibility for sponsorship and support of the university is charged to the Nazarene congregations in Ohio, West Virginia, and the eastern half of Kentucky. The aspiration of the university is that academic and student life activities be integrated in a Wesleyan holiness tradition to facilitate character, value, and cultural development to improve the quality of life. This is expressed in the motto: "To seek to learn is to seek to serve." The university offers more than 80 academic programs and a full range of pre-professional programs while granting associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees. MVNU offers 11 intercollegiate sports (men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s golf), and students can take part in an active intramural program.

The Campus

The MVNU campus consists of 400 tree-filled acres on the Lakeholm farm. The gently rolling fields, bordered on the rear by the Kokosing River, constitute a campus of natural beauty. The university buildings are of Williamsburg colonial design blending well with the site and complementing Mount Vernon's reputation as "Ohio's Colonial City." Four dorms (Pioneer, Oakwood, Galloway, and Redwood) and seven apartment complexes (Maplewood, Elmwood, Rosewood, Cedar, Birch, Spruce, and Cypress) provide quality living quarters for residential students. Major buildings include: Faculty, Founders, and Regents Halls (three large classroom buildings), the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Fine Arts Complex, the Jetter School of Business, the Hyson Campus Center, the Lakeholm Administration Building, the Physical Education Center, Donoho Recreation Center, and Prince Student Union, the Thorne Library/Learning Resource Center, and the Jennie K. Moore Family and Consumer Science Building. The university also holds classes in the Buchwald Center and Hunter Hall in downtown Mount Vernon as well.

Cougar 2 Baseball UNIVERSITY INFORMATION

In addition to the central campus, the university owns a 70-acre tract of woodland just six miles northeast of the city. Currently, this tract is used as a biological field station for MVNU's biology and natural resources programs.

Academic Programs

The university offers over 40 majors with more than 80 different programs from its 21 academic departments. Bachelor’s degrees are available in: Nursing, Accounting, Business Administration, Applied Business Technology, Management, Marketing, International Business, Early Childhood Education, Middle Childhood Education, Integrated Language Arts, Integrated Mathematics, Integrated Social Studies, Life Science Education, Physical Science Education, Music Education, Physical Education/Health, Spanish Education, Visual Arts Education, Integrated Business, Family and Consumer Sciences, Exercise Studies, Sports Management, Art, Music, Communication, Broadcasting, Drama, Graphic Design, English, Professional Writing, Spanish, Biology, Chemistry, Pre-Allied Health Programs, Medical Technology, Computer Science, Mathematics, Children’s Ministries, Educational Ministries, Youth Ministries, Philosophy, Religion, History, Psychology, Social Work, Criminal Justice, and Sociology. SPORTS INFORMATION DIRECTOR

Dave Parsons is entering his 15th year as the sports information director at MVNU and his 20th season working in the Cougars’ sports information department. Prior to assuming the role as SID, Parsons served as the assistant SID for five years handling primarily the women’s sports – a role that he began during his senior year at MVNU and continued in upon graduation in 1994. Parsons received the Clarence “Ike” Pearson Award as the NAIA SID of the Year in 2008 and was the MVNU Staff Member of the Year in 2009. He served as the NAIA-SIDA President from 2007-2009. He has been a CoSIDA member for 20 years and served on various committees.

Cougar 3 Baseball HEAD KEITH VEALE

Keith Veale is entering his 24th season as the head coach of the MVNU baseball program. Over the past 23 years, Veale has led the Cougars to a 774-395 overall record (.662), seven conference titles, five National Christian College Athletic Association national championships, and the school’s only two berths in the NAIA World Series in 1997 and 2004. MVNU has also won 30 or more games 17 times under Veale, and topped the 40-win mark during five of those years. In 2012, Veale guided the Cougars to a 33-20 record as they captured the MCC Tournament title and earned a berth in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round for the third straight year. Veale has been selected as the NCCAA National Coach of the Year six times and conference Coach of the Year seven times, and he was tabbed as the NAIA Region Coach of the Year in 1996, 1997, and 2007. He has seen his teams qualify for postseason play in the NAIA in 22 of his 23 years at the helm, and he has also had 12 players sign contracts during his tenure at MVNU. In 1996, Veale led the Cougars to a 43-3 overall record, setting the NAIA record for best winning percentage in a season (.935). That team also put together a school-record 24-game winning streak at one point. To show that 1996 was not a fluke, Veale and the Cougars posted a program-best 47-8 overall record in 1997. The team also went 17-1 in the conference and advanced to the NAIA World Series in Sioux City, Iowa, for the first time in school history. MVNU’s other NAIA World Series berth came in 2004 in Lewiston, Idaho, with a fifth-place finish. A native of Owosso, Michigan, Veale graduated from John Wesley (Mich.) College in 1979 after playing baseball for four years, tennis for two years, and soccer for a year. He came to MVNU after graduation, and in addition to coaching baseball, he has served as the women’s volleyball coach (1983), the men’s soccer coach (1988), the women’s softball coach (1987-1989), and the intramural director (1979-1988). Veale was inducted into the Cougar Wall of Fame in October 2007. Veale, who also teaches in the Physical Education Department, resides in Mount Vernon with his wife, Toni. The couple has two grown children, Elyia and Kodi.

Dick Laslo is beginning his 11th season as an assistant coach at MVNU and has proven to be a valuable asset to the program. His main responsibilities include recruiting, scouting, and checking the players’ academic progress as well as coaching first base. He also has over 20 years of youth baseball coaching experience. Laslo, who retired after 30 years in the retail business, is a 1968 graduate of Muskingum College where he played football for four years. He and his wife, Nancy, reside in Mount Vernon. Cougar 14 Baseball BASEBALL FACILITIES

The MVNU baseball team plays its home games at Cougar Field, which is located adjacent to the Physical Education Center on campus. The field was renovated for the 2011 season with a ProGrass Synthetic Turf infield being installed to go with the natural grass outfield. The press box will accommodate up to two radio stations and an electronic scoreboard features inning-by-inning scoring. The dimensions of Cougar Field are 327 down the leftfield line, 390 to centerfield, and 350 down the rightfield line. There are in-ground dugouts on both sides and bullpen areas down both foul lines. The field is known for its exceptional natural drainage that makes it playable in almost all conditions. In addition to Cougar Field, the team practices during the off-season in the Physical Education Center and the hitting facility that is beyond the rightfield fence. This facility (built in 1998) is a 100-by-50-foot fully turfed building that is capable of providing three batting cages as well as infield versatility.

Cougar 15 Baseball 2013 SEASON OUTLOOK

With spring just around the corner, the Mount Vernon Nazarene University baseball team is making final preparations to write what the Cougars hope will be the next successful chapter in the program's winning tradition. The 2012 season proved to be another exciting year of MVNU baseball as the Cougars posted a 33-20 overall record, captured the Mid-Central College Conference Tournament after a 21-13 conference regular-season mark, and advanced to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round for the third straight year. Head coach Keith Veale will enter his 24th season guiding the team. During that span, the Cougars have compiled a 774-395 overall record and earned a berth in the NAIA postseason in 22 of the 23 seasons. This year's roster will return an experienced position player lineup as well as two of the team's top pitchers from a year ago along with a talented group of new players for what should be another exciting season. “We have a lot of moving pieces on this roster,” said Veale. “This roster is not deep in terms of numbers, but we do have depth at each position that should keep us competitive. We are making a couple of adjustments in our defensive alignment, but we do have experience up and down the lineup.” Over the years, success for MVNU has started on the mound and the 2013 season will be no different as the Cougar pitching staff will be counted on to toss quality innings. Senior lefty Justin Brown (6-4, 3.80 ERA), junior right-hander Mike Kochheiser (7-1, 2.87 ERA), junior right- hander Seth Eller (0-2, 5.19 ERA), freshman right-hander Ben Hoar, and sophomore right-hander Kenny McCambridge (0-2, 7.00 ERA) are all potential conference game starters, while freshman right-hander Roberto Cediel, freshman right-hander Lucas Daugherty, sophomore right-hander Andrew Fila, sophomore lefty Cameron Juhasz (1-2, 2.79 ERA), freshman lefty Logan Perkins, and senior right-hander Jordan Doherty round out the rest of the bullpen in various roles. Handling the catching duties will be a trio of players in sophomore Clint Spencer (.310, 15 RBI, 40 starts), freshman Efrain Montero, and sophomore Corey Kubbs. Eller and sophomore Cory Brown will be the Cougars' two options at first base. Eller posted a .352 batting average with 51 starts last season while driving in 35 runs and scoring 39 runs, while Brown red-shirted. Sophomore Sterling Harpst, McCambridge, and freshman Riley Swanson are all options at second base this season for MVNU. Harpst batted .327 with 25 RBI and started 50 games there last year, while McCambridge posted a .260 batting average in 17 games. Swanson and Doherty will be the primary options at shortstop for the Cougars. After being a three-year starter on the infield, Doherty, who batted a team-best .360 with 29 RBI and 27 runs scored last year, will most likely transition to the outfield thanks to the play of Swanson. McCambridge, junior Jeff Stone, and sophomore Josh Leonard will all compete for time at third base. Stone started 51 games at the hot corner last year and posted a .357 batting average with a team-leading 49 RBI and 34 runs scored while going 8-for-8 in stolen bases. In the outfield, sophomore Jake Dickerson (.356, 41 RBI, 41 runs) is penciled in to start in leftfield, Doherty will start in centerfield, and Fila (.341, 15 stolen bases) and junior Sean Fleming (.292, 26 runs) are competing for the starting job in rightfield, while Brown and McCambridge also add depth. The Cougars are slated to open the season with a pair of home non-conference doubleheaders against Ohio Christian University on February 28 and Ohio Mid-Western College on March 2. Then, the team will travel to Lakeland, Fla. for their annual spring trip that will include 13 games in a nine-day span. Then, MVNU will turn its attention to conference play in the renamed Crossroads League with a home and away doubleheader against each of the other conference opponents. Taylor (Ind.) University is the preseason pick to win the title, while Spring Arbor (Mich.) University, the University of Saint Francis (Ind.), Huntington (Ind.) University, Indiana Wesleyan University, Marian (Ind.) University, Bethel (Ind.) College, Grace (Ind.) College, and Goshen (Ind.) College will all prove to be challenging competition game in and game out. “We now have the experience of having been through the conference schedule this past season and our returning players know what we are in for,” said Veale, referring to the fact that 2012 was the team's first year in the conference. “The schedule is challenging and will be a marathon. We had a great conference tournament last spring and look to build on that in 2013. We have always competed well in the postseason, and this club is hungry to get there again.”

The Crossroads League, formerly the Mid- Central College Conference, was founded in 1959 and is one of the oldest conferences in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The Crossroads League currently consists of 10 institutions located in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio: Bethel (Ind.) College, Goshen (Ind.) College, Grace (Ind.) College, Huntington (Ind.) University, Indiana Wesleyan University, Marian (Ind.) University, Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University, the University of Saint Francis (Ind.), Spring Arbor (Mich.) University, and Taylor (Ind.) University.

The purpose of the Crossroads League is to promote intercollegiate athletics in a well-rounded athletic program, maintain high ideals, and to promote sportsmanship. The conference sponsors championships in 14 sports (seven for men and seven for women). Crossroads League student athletes and teams also make their mark on the NAIA national level by virtue of national championships, All-Americans, Scholar- Athletes, national rankings, and statistical leaders.

For complete information on the conference as well as up-to-date standings, statistics, and stories for each sport, go to:

www.crossroadsleague.com

Throughout its history, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. Time and time again, the NAIA has stepped forward to address the important issues of the day – be it racial integration in the ‘40s and ‘50s or establishing the first women’s championship program in 1980. The NAIA has not been afraid to enact changes while others have watched and waited.

Cougar 22 Baseball MVNU’S AFFILIATIONS

With its major emphasis on educational development, it was natural for the NAIA to further strengthen academic eligibility requirements in the mid-1980s. All NAIA participating student-athletes must maintain a certain grade point average while accumulating credit hours for a declared academic degree. Unlike other associations, NAIA student- athlete academic eligibility is monitored on a semester-by-semester basis. The Scholar-Athlete program, a longstanding NAIA tradition, recognizes junior and senior student-athletes with a minimum 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Since 1937, the NAIA has administered athletics programs and championships in proper balance with the overall collegiate educational experience. Serving higher education in this manner is a responsibility the NAIA does not take lightly. It is a relationship built on confidence and trust – a relationship strengthened year after year.

The National Christian College Athletic Association is a miracle organization. Over the years, an idea has become a reality providing Christian student-athletes in Christian colleges and universities both an opportunity for fellowship and competition on a national level. The NCCAA game plan is to produce true winners – a game plan that will carry an individual through his or her entire life. The game plan is devised to draw out the student-athlete’s greatest potential in body, mind, and spirit.

Since its first tournament in 1968, the NCCAA has grown to encompass more than 100 Christian colleges and universities nationwide, both liberal arts and Bible colleges in stature. The participating schools are dedicated not only to the best athletic competition possible, but also to exemplifying Jesus Christ in everything. The NCCAA is an organization bringing Christian colleges and universities together not just for athletic competition. More importantly, it is an organization bringing schools together which have common goals in Christian higher education.

Cougar 37 Baseball MVNU PLAYERS IN THE PROS

Tim Belcher helped to put the MVNU baseball program on the map when he became the first Cougar to be drafted by a professional baseball team. In the June 1983 amateur draft, Belcher was selected as the very first pick in the draft by the Minnesota Twins. He was the first MVNU athlete to have his jersey (#21) retired and was the second member of the Cougar Wall of Fame (1994), and he was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame at the 2004 NAIA World Series.
