  • 2017 Summerhill Stud Sale of Mares and Weanlings
“As One Door Closes, Another One Opens…” There is never a good time to do this, more so as it involves the dispersal of the families that have brought international recognition to Summerhill. When our former stud manager John Slade, was assisting with our mating plans last July, he was charmed by the layered evolution of our broodmares through generations of the leading stallions Northern Guest, Home Guard, Liloy, Rambo Dancer, National Emblem, Fard, Kahal and Muhtafal, all of them “top ten” luminaries, several of them national champions in one category or another. While this is an emotional time for all of us, it’s an opportune one for our colleagues. Our good friend Graham Beck, laid the foundations for his stellar successes at Highlands and Maine Chance through his legendary “raids” on their stock, as well as those of the Noreen, Scott Bros. and Hartford studs. For our own part, the partnerships we’d assembled in 1987 were dispersed on their maturity in 1998, and we were left with just 26 mares on the farm; seven years later, through our re- investment in those families, we’d won the first of ten national premierships. Famously, the dams of Jet Master, Royal Chalice, Angus and Pierre Jourdan, among many others, were acquired right here, as was Varsfontein’s “Blue Hen”, Secret Pact. While Summerhill’s successes owe much to the stallions that’ve decorated our barn over the decades, it’s arguable that we’ve never been better served than in the outstanding young sprinter-milers currently doing duty here, Act Of War, Capetown Noir, Willow Magic and Linngari; they comprise the bulk of the covering sires in the catalogue.

TUESDAY, JUNE 25, 2019 ‘EVEN THE BAD IS GOOD, WESTS: STEWARDS GETTING FINAL SAY IN DERBY DQ IS ‘VERY DEFINITION OF THAT’S HOW YOU LEARN’ TYRANNY’ by T.D. Thornton Court documents filed Monday by Gary and Mary West allege that giving the Churchill Downs stewards the final say in the controversial GI Kentucky Derby disqualification amounts to a “breathtaking and dangerous” concentration of power that is “the very definition of tyranny.” The Wests are also alleging that in the aftermath of the disputed GI Kentucky Derby disqualification, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) failed to follow its own rules by not declaring Maximum Security (New Year’s Day) and Country House (Lookin At Lucky) co-winners until the case got decided in a court of law. The Wests now want the purse money and trophy escrowed until the final outcome gets definitively adjudicated via the lawsuit they currently have pending. Rough’n Tumble with Joe O’Farrell in 1960 “There is no reason for the Court not to immediately right this State Archives of Florida, Florida Memory wrong by declaring Maximum Security to be co-winner of the by Chris McGrath Derby pending final adjudication of this case,” the plaintiffs’ His final semester, University of Florida. • Maximum Effort
SUNDAY, AUGUST 23, 2020 MAXIMUM EFFORT HALLADAY COAST-TO-COAST IN FOURSTARDAVE by Alan Carasso When last seen, Harrell Ventures LLC=s Halladay (War Front) was wrangled back off the pace and ultimately ran fourth in the GII Bernard Baruch H. July 26, allowing Somelikeithotbrown (Big Brown) to post a relatively hassle-free, front-running victory. With that failed experiment in the rear view, it was back to pedal-to-the-metal tactics in Saturday=s GI Fourstardave H. and the gray colt repelled a late bid from defending champion Got Stormy (Get Stormy) to land the spoils. Casa Creed (Jimmy Creed) rallied to complete the trifecta. The victory earns Halladay a fees-paid berth into the GI Breeders= Cup Mile at Keeneland Nov. 7. Not the quickest away from the machine, Halladay was asked to pick up the bit and secured the front passing under the wire for the first time, as Got Stormy, Without Parole (GB) (Frankel Maximum Security all alone at the finish | Horsephotos {GB}) and Emmaus (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) did the early chasing. Cont. p4 by Alan Carasso Whether you love him or have mixed feelings about him, there is one thing about Maximum Security (New Year=s Day) that is IN TDN EUROPE TODAY very hard to dispute: he is an outstanding racehorse. BOLGER HOMEBRED DELIVERS IN FUTURITY Prohibitively favored at 40 cents on the dollar to take Jim Bolger homebred Mac Swiney (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) Saturday=s GI TVG Pacific Classic in his second start since being caused an upset in the G2 Futurity S.
