First up on Centre Court at the Kungliga Tennishallen, Swedish brothers Elias and Mikael Ymer face No. 4 seeds Mate Pavic and Michael Venus for the doubles title. It has been an impressive team debut for Elias, aged 20, and 18-year-old Mikael, playing his first ATP tour-level doubles event the same week he registered his first tour-level singles win over Fernando Verdasco in the first round. The duo saved three match points to beat No. 3 seeds Marcin Matkowski and Jean-Julien Rojer in the first round and ousted No. 2 seeds Rohan Bopanna and Treat Huey in the semi-finals to become the third brothers to reach a doubles final in 2016 (also Alexander/Mischa Zverev and Bob/Mike Bryan). Pavic and Venus denied the Zverev brothers victory in the Montpellier final and are chasing their fifth title of 2016 (also Auckland, Marseille and s-Hertogenbosch). Wild card del Potro has reached his second final of 2016 (also Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, l. to Murray) without dropping a set. The Argentine is bidding to win the 19th title of his career, and first since Sydney 2014 (d. Tomic) against Jack Sock, who won their only previous encounter at the ATP Masters 1000 Madrid in May. While del Potro’s route to the final has featured just two breaks of serve, both against Dimitrov in the semi- finals, newly-installed U.S. No. 1 Sock has battled his way to the final, spending a cumulative 8 hours, 35 minutes on court – almost 3 hours longer than del Potro – including the longest match of the tournament against Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals. Sock, back in the final for a second straight year (2015 l. to Berdych) is bidding to become the first American to win the Stockholm title since James Blake in 2006 (d. Srichaphan), while del Potro is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Argentine 2008 champion David Nalbandian (d. Soderling). Also in action on Stadium Court are former World No. 2 Tommy Haas, No. 13 seed Steve Johnson and Cincinnati semi-finalist Alexandr Dolgopolov, who opens his Winston-Salem campaign against 19-year-old Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis. Three other teenagers – No. 8 seed Borna Coric, qualifier Frances Tiafoe and Hyeon Chung – are playing Monday on Court 2. DEFENDING CHAMPION RETURNS: Last year, Rosol took an unorthodox route to the Winston- Salem Open title. Seeded seventh, he received a first-round bye, second-round retirement (d. Harrison 3-6, 2-1 ret) and quarterfinal walkover (d. Isner). In his three full matches, Rosol needed three sets to beat No. 10 seed Pablo Andujar, No. 9 seed Yen-Hsun Lu and Jerzy Janowicz. GULBIS SHOWING SIGNS: Rosol’s opponent Gulbis is only 14 months removed from cracking the Top 10 of the Emirates ATP Rankings.
