We believe that St. George’s College Jerusalem offers a comprehensive pilgrimage experience that is second to none.

6 saintgeorgescollegejerusalem.com | COURSE CATALOG Long-term Relationship with Local Communities in the Holy Land

In 2020, St. George’s College will celebrate 100 years since our establishment. From the beginning we have served the local Anglican communities in the Middle East, and especially in Jerusalem. St. George’s College, a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem, has a long-term commitment to the communities that make up this diverse country. On your pilgrimage you will be immersed in the local community where you will meet and worship alongside indigenous Christians, known as the “Living Stones”.

The College is a Beautiful and Comfortable Environment

Rather than staying in hotels, St. George’s has its own facilities, just ten minutes’ walk from the Old City of Jerusalem. It is a peaceful idyll in which to reflect and to rest. Rooms are comfortable with private bathrooms, the learning environment is outstanding and there are comfortable areas in which to socialize. Meals are provided in the Pilgrim Guest House, which is an attractive context for dining and fellowship together. Accommodation outside Jerusalem is chosen to provide similar levels of comfort.

The Footsteps of Jesus study pilgrimage which lasts for 10 days, invites participants to become pilgrims who follow the journey that Jesus and his first disciples made through the Holy Land. Its focus is more devotional than the longer Palestine of Jesus course, while still covering all the major sites. The course aims to lead its members to be struck anew by the power of Jesus’s teaching and healing ministry, to experience both the joy and the sorrow of his journey to the cross, and to encounter the risen Christ at his tomb and in breaking bread together at Emmaus. Mini-lectures prepare pilgrims for site visits and explore the geographical contexts of Jesus’s ministry. The course also integrates contextual biblical study with theological and spiritual reflection, reflects on contemporary issues in Israel and Palestine, and encounters the roots and traditions of the Christian faiths of East and West. All activities are rooted in prayer.

The modern Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is the “other Holy Land,” rich in biblical and early Church history. This course is designed as an add-on taken either immediately before or after a course at St. George’s College in Jerusalem. Pilgrims gather in Jerusalem and cross into Jordan via the Allenby Bridge, where our Jordanian guide joins the St. George’s College course leader. The itinerary includes the early Christian churches of Mt. Nebo (where Moses died) and Madaba (where the famous Madaba mosaic map is located), and the capital city of Amman, rich in early Christian and Islamic cultural remains. The course travels south to the World Heritage Site of Petra, the capital of the ancient Nabatean Kingdom, with a day of visiting the extensive rock-cut tombs and buildings of this city. The pilgrimage continues through the desert of southern Jordan to Wadi Rum (of Lawrence of Arabia movie and history fame) and a half day of 4x4 vehicle and camel- riding exploration. The biblical narratives that describe the Israelite experience east of the Jordan River will form the backbone of worship and study during this mini-pilgrimage. Please be advised that during July the deserts of Jordan will be extremely hot, and a visit to Petra could be in 49 degree Celsius/120 degree Fahrenheit weather. Those who cannot bear such temperatures will do well to choose this course at another time of year. Petra
