The aim of this publication is to improve communication within the Parish by providing news and information on a wide variety of subjects and issues. 1 Newsletter Foreword David Fothergill (Somerset County Councillor) - June 2012 In my role as County Councillor I get to see a wide cross section of newsletters, sadly some appear tired and lacking enthusiasm, seemingly unloved apart from a few dedicated producers. I am delighted to say that the Neroche Villages Newsletter is totally the opposite of any of these criticisms; it is vibrant, interesting, informative and reflects the community it serves. A very big well done is deserved by all the team, from editor to volunteer deliverers, who seem to take the self-funding newsletter from strength to strength. It seems difficult to believe but in ten months’ time (where has the last three years gone?!) we will be electing a new County Council.

    SOMERSET GEOLOGY-A GOOD ROCK GUIDE Hugh Prudden The great unconformity figured by De la Beche WELCOME TO SOMERSET Welcome to green fields, wild flower meadows, farm cider, Cheddar cheese, picturesque villages, wild moorland, peat moors, a spectacular coastline, quiet country lanes…… To which we can add a wealth of geological features. The gorge and caves at Cheddar are well-known. Further east near Frome there are Silurian volcanics, Carboniferous Limestone outcrops, Variscan thrust tectonics, Permo-Triassic conglomerates, sediment-filled fissures, a classic unconformity, Jurassic clays and limestones, Cretaceous Greensand and Chalk topped with Tertiary remnants including sarsen stones-a veritable geological park! Elsewhere in Mendip are reminders of coal and lead mining both in the field and museums. Today the Mendips are a major source of aggregates. The Mesozoic formations curve in an arc through southwest and southeast Somerset creating vales and escarpments that define the landscape and clearly have influenced the patterns of soils, land use and settlement as at Porlock. The church building stones mark the outcrops. Wilder country can be found in the Quantocks, Brendon Hills and Exmoor which are underlain by rocks of Devonian age and within which lie sunken blocks (half-grabens) containing Permo-Triassic sediments. The coastline contains exposures of Devonian sediments and tectonics west of Minehead adjoining the classic exposures of Mesozoic sediments and structural features which extend eastward to the Parrett estuary. The predominance of wave energy from the west and the large tidal range of the Bristol Channel has resulted in rapid cliff erosion and longshore drift to the east where there is a full suite of accretionary landforms: sandy beaches, storm ridges, salt marsh, and sand dunes popular with summer visitors.

Signature: ……………………………………………………………………………… Abstract Medieval castle slighting is the phenomenon in which a high-status fortification is demolished in a time of conflict. At its heart are issues about symbolism, the role of castles in medieval society, and the politics of power. Although examples can be found throughout the Middle Ages (1066–1500) in England, Wales and Scotland there has been no systematic study of the archaeology of castle slighting. Understanding castle slighting enhances our view of medieval society and how it responded to power struggles. This study interrogates the archaeological record to establish the nature of castle slighting: establishing how prevalent it was chronologically and geographically; which parts of castles were most likely to be slighted and why this is significant; the effects on the immediate landscape; and the wider role of destruction in medieval society. The contribution of archaeology is especially important as contemporary records give little information about this phenomenon. Using information recovered from excavation and survey allows this thesis to challenge existing narratives about slighting, especially with reference to the civil war between Stephen and Matilda (1139–1154) and the view that slighting was primarily to prevent an enemy from using a fortification.

    Appendix Neroche Landscape Partnership Scheme Background In September 2006 the Neroche LPS was formally awarded £2M from the Heritage Lottery Fund to deliver a comprehensive package of projects embracing improved public access, biodiversity conservation, landscape enhancement, environmental education, heritage interpretation, volunteering, skills training and community engagement. In addition to the Lottery Funding, a further £300k was secured from 11 funding partners (including SSDC) and £645k secured from in- kind contributions and other grants. The Lottery funded programme comes to an end in April 2010. South Somerset District Council has committed a total of £10,500 to the Scheme in four annual instalments of £2,625 covering the period up to April 2010. Achievements so far – across the wider Somerset area The Neroche LPS has achieved a great deal over the last 3 years. A number of the key headlines are as follows: 13.5 miles of new multi-user circular trail established with innovative digital trail guide. 300 hectares (740 acres) of linking butterfly habitat and open space created following plantation harvesting. 90 English Longhorn cattle acquired to graze butterfly habitats and establish a new added- value beef business for a local farmer. 1000 metres of new all-ability trail and viewpoint suitable for wheelchair users. 50 health walks assisted catering for over 500 people with special needs. 25 staff from 17 primary and secondary schools trained as Forest School leaders. 500 volunteer days generated by local people on heritage projects including a community excavation on a lost Medieval village. 300 children and adults took part in the first ‘Punkie Night’ reviving a Blackdowns tradition.

Once upon a time in a beautiful land called Neroche, the villagers decided to stop pesky crows eating their crops by making ScareCROWS. In 2019 two crows were happily visiting this idyllic part of Somerset. “Goodness” said VelCROW looking down. “It’s July again and that means one thing – Scarecrows! I’m out of here.” CROWdie looked none too pleased at being abandoned on her holidays and decided to take a closer look at what was going on beneath her. She flew down over the quaint area known as Bickenhall where Old Mother Hubbard was fretting over her bare cupboard and not one, not two but three Humptys Really Really Scared her. She thought Humpty Trumpty would be quite frightening; she was a little worried about Humpty Dumpty falling off the wall and hoped that his friend Humpty would remain upright too. She didn’t like the look of Jonathan Joe, with his mouth like an O, so she flew on to spy on Curland.
