We were treated to a virtuoso performance by David Oistrach playing Beethoven’s Romance for Violin and Orchestra, and the first half ended with the hauntingly lovely sound of Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus. After coffee we started with Mozart’s Salzburg Symphony. The stately and solemn Sarabande by Handel preceded another opera favourite, the duet from Act 1 of La Boheme by Puccini. Then we heard the green and fragrant tones of Vaughan William’s Fantasia on Greensleeves. Does anyone else see music in terms of colour? I often find English music evokes a green sensation. After a short and envigorating burst of Telemann’s Trumpet Concerto the concert finished with Rossini’s William Tell overture. As David said, the first part of this piece with its mosaic of woodwind playing is actually more interesting than the moment when the Lone Ranger bursts onto the scene. But as usual I will indulge myself with a favourite moment of the evening, and that was Cecelia Bartolli’s heartbreaking interpretation of Handel’s Lascia la Spina – pure sensory delight. On 11th May we have our Annual Dinner at Udders restaurant and then on 15th our presenter is Alan Thomas. Thoughts from the Methodist Minister St. Gregory's Church Dear Friends, I don’t want to appear like a grumpy old man (!), but… I do get more than a bit irritated by the ‘cult of celebrity’ whereby people seem to become famous for doing nothing much at all! Therefore, it is all the more exciting when you stumble across someone who is one of the ‘unknowns’ who has lived an extraordinary life. This has been my experience after being lent a book that has been recently published – the autobiography of a Methodist Minister called, Rev George Kendall (see, you’ve never heard of him either, have you?!) George died in 1961, but his family have only recently compiled the autobiography. George came from humble roots in a Yorkshire working class, rural community but who, through self-education, supportive Services & Events for September 2018 family, a strong Christian faith and sheer hard work became a confidante Morning Prayer is held daily from Tuesday to Friday at 8.00 in the to British royalty, prime ministers and other leaders throughout the Hussey Chapel first half of the 20th century. As an ordained minister George became Sunday 2nd - (Patronal Festival) a Chaplain during the First World War. Because of his Christian faith, wit 08.00 – Holy Communion [said] and straight talking he was accepted, trusted and respected. George was 10.00 – Parish Eucharist no po-faced cleric, he was clearly a very funny man who used humour to put people at their ease and tell stories that captured the imagination. Wednesday 5th Perhaps his humour allowed George to deal with some of the terrible 09.00 - Children’s Service led by things he witnessed as a Chaplain serving on the front line during St Gregory’s Primary School both the 1st and 2nd World Wars? When not in military service, he 11.00 Holy Communion had an outstanding ministry in ‘civvy’ street. However, I was struck by the way George wrote about one of the most remarkable roles he had Sunday 9th (15th Sunday after Trinity) as a Chaplain. In 1920 he was made responsible for the exhumation of the battlefields of Belgium and France and building the war cemeteries 08.00 – Holy Communion [said] we know today. His work there culminated in the secretive process to 10.00 – Parish Eucharist select the body that became 'The Unknown Warrior' - to be buried at Westminster Abbey. George writes about this time with such humility – Wednesday 12th an amazing eye witness account of the events surrounding that process. 09.00 - Children’s Service led by All of this struck a chord with me because we are in the midst of St Gregory’s Primary School (coffee before service) ‘Remembrance 100 – 100 days of Peace & Hope’. This is an initiative of the Archbishop of Canterbury to encourage us all to spend the period from Sunday 16th (16th Sunday after Trinity ) 4th August to 11th November this year praying and working for Peace in 08.00 – Holy Communion [said] this present day. Archbishop Justin reminds us that King George V called 10.00 – Parish Eucharist the nation to prayer on 4th August 1918 and 100 days later the Armistice was declared. We too must hear again the call of Jesus who reminds us Wednesday 19th that, ‘Blessed are those who make peace.’ 09.00 - Children’s Service led by I have been blessed by learning about the remarkable life of Rev George St Gregory’s Primary School (coffee before service) Kendall – an ordinary man who served as a military Chaplain. As such he did nothing to glorify war, but lived a vibrant life bringing hope and Sunday 23rd (17th Sunday after Trinity) making peace. The ‘Remembrance 100’ initiative invites us to be those 08.00 – Holy Communion [said] who do all we can to pray and work for peace today… 10.00 – Parish Eucharist Peace, Rev Paul Arnold Wednesday 26th 09.00 - Children’s Service led by St Gregory’s Primary School (coffee before service)

St Mary's Catholic School

It’s hard to believe that another academic year is over but we have had a fantastic one! The term ended with the whole school getting on stage for our end of year performance of ‘Where the Wild Things Are’. The children were fantastic and the show was hugely enjoyed by all!

We are so proud of our Year 6 children who sat their national tests in May. The results have finally been released and all of our Year 6 children reached the national standard meaning 100% are at age related expectation with many of them exceeding this standard. The children have worked so hard and have made amazing progress. We wish them all well for the next stage of their education and hope they will continue this huge success at their next school!

We rounded off our topic on the Jurassic coast with a whole school trip to Kimmeridge. The children spent the day learning about and searching for fossils. They used all the knowledge and investigative skills they had learnt during our topic to search out and identify different fossils with the help of the team at Kimmeridge. Everyone came home with back packs full of fossils and spent time back at school sketching them. All in all we have had a great year at St Mary’s and would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have supported us!

We still have places for September. If you would like to come and view the school, please contact us on 01258 820417 or just pop in! St Mary's Explorers

What Price of Land vs the Value of Culture?

Marnhull is blessed with an internationally recognised culture associated with the renowned author and poet Thomas Hardy. The beginning of his best-selling novel, Tess of the d’Uurbervilles was set here in the village, known as Marlott in the story. Published in 1891 it tells the tale of how Tess’ moves from the innocence of a May Day dance to being the victim of double standards within two very different societies. Its appeal today defies the judgement of Hardy’s contemporary critics. The boundary of the churchyard where Tess buries her illegitimate baby, Sorrow, could well be that of St Gregory’s - its tower a beacon across the Blackmore Vale landscape. Fast forward a century and St Gregory’s tower is the subject of a water colour by the artist, Gordon Beningfield. “I tried to think where Hardy would have seen the May Day dance taking place - I think it might have been here”. Wrote Beningfield in 1983. Beningfield is to Dorset what Constable is to Suffolk. His water colours are collectable works of art. His knowledge of Dorset - cum Wessex or Hardy Country - is internationally acclaimed. So much so, that Select Books Inc. a publisher based in New York used Beningfield’s painting of Marnhull’s parish church for the hard cover of its publication “The Darkling Thrush - and other poems by Thomas Hardy - pictures by Gordon Beningfield”. Distribution, by Abe Books, is to all major English-speaking countries - the USA, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Hong Kong, etc.
